Sea-level trend variability in the Mediterranean during the 1993–2019 period
Sea-level change is one of the most concerning climate change and global warming consequences, especially impacting coastal societies and environments. The spatial and temporal variability of sea level is neither linear nor globally uniform, especially in semi-enclosed basins such as the Mediterranean Sea, which is considered a hot spot regarding expected impacts related to climate change. This study investigates sea-level trends and their variability over the Mediterranean Sea from 1993 to 2019. We use gridded sea-level anomaly products from satellite altimetry for the total observed sea level, whereas ocean temperature and salinity profiles from reanalysis were used to compute the thermosteric and halosteric effects, respectively, and the steric component of the sea level. We perform a statistical change point detection to assess the spatial and temporal significance of each trend change. The linear trend provides a clear indication of the non-steric effects as the dominant drivers over the entire period at the Mediterranean Sea scale, except for the Levantine and Aegean sub-basins, where the steric component explains the majority of the sea-level trend. The main changes in sea-level trends are detected around 1997, 2006, 2010, and 2016, associated with Northern Ionian Gyre reversal episodes, which changed the thermohaline properties and water mass redistribution over the sub-basins
Central Auditory Processing Outcome After Stroke In Children.
To investigate central auditory processing in children with unilateral stroke and to verify whether the hemisphere affected by the lesion influenced auditory competence. 23 children (13 male) between 7 and 16 years old were evaluated through speech-in-noise tests (auditory closure); dichotic digit test and staggered spondaic word test (selective attention); pitch pattern and duration pattern sequence tests (temporal processing) and their results were compared with control children. Auditory competence was established according to the performance in auditory analysis ability. Was verified similar performance between groups in auditory closure ability and pronounced deficits in selective attention and temporal processing abilities. Most children with stroke showed an impaired auditory ability in a moderate degree. Children with stroke showed deficits in auditory processing and the degree of impairment was not related to the hemisphere affected by the lesion.72680-
Low-level Laser Therapy to the Mouse Femur Enhances the Fungicidal Response of Neutrophils against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis
Neutrophils (PMN) play a central role in host defense against the neglected fungal infection paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), which is caused by the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb). PCM is of major importance, especially in Latin America, and its treatment relies on the use of antifungal drugs. However, the course of treatment is lengthy, leading to side effects and even development of fungal resistance. the goal of the study was to use low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to stimulate PMN to fight Pb in vivo. Swiss mice with subcutaneous air pouches were inoculated with a virulent strain of Pb or fungal cell wall components (Zymosan), and then received LLLT (780 nm; 50 mW; 12.5 J/cm2; 30 seconds per point, giving a total energy of 0.5 J per point) on alternate days at two points on each hind leg. the aim was to reach the bone marrow in the femur with light. Non-irradiated animals were used as controls. the number and viability of the PMN that migrated to the inoculation site was assessed, as well as their ability to synthesize proteins, produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their fungicidal activity. the highly pure PMN populations obtained after 10 days of infection were also subsequently cultured in the presence of Pb for trials of protein production, evaluation of mitochondrial activity, ROS production and quantification of viable fungi growth. PMN from mice that received LLLT were more active metabolically, had higher fungicidal activity against Pb in vivo and also in vitro. the kinetics of neutrophil protein production also correlated with a more activated state. LLLT may be a safe and non-invasive approach to deal with PCM infection.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientĂfico e TecnolĂłgico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo Ă Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais (FAPEMIG)National Institute of Health (US NIH)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de NĂvel Superior (CAPES)Fed Univ Alfenas UNIFAL MG, Inst Biomed Sci, Dept Microbiol & Immunol, Alfenas, MG, BrazilFed Univ Alfenas UNIFAL MG, Inst Biomed Sci, Dept Biochem, Alfenas, MG, BrazilState Univ Campinas UNICAMP, Inst Biol, Dept Struct & Funct Biol, SĂŁo Paulo, BrazilFed Univ SĂŁo Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Microbiol Immunol & Parasitol, SĂŁo Paulo, SP, BrazilMassachusetts Gen Hosp, Wellman Ctr Photomed, Boston, MA 02114 USAHarvard Univ, Sch Med, Dept Dermatol, Boston, MA 02115 USAMIT, Harvard Mit Div Hlth Sci & Technol, Cambridge, MA 02139 USAFed Univ Alfenas UNIFAL MG, Inst Biomed Sci, Dept Pathol & Parasitol, Alfenas, MG, BrazilFed Univ SĂŁo Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Microbiol Immunol & Parasitol, SĂŁo Paulo, SP, BrazilCNPq: 486135/2012-8CNPq: 304827/2012-6FAPEMIG: CBB-PPM-00119-14National Institute of Health (US NIH): R01AI050875CAPES: AEX-9765-14-0Web of Scienc

The evolution of 21st century sea-level projections from IPCC AR5 to AR6 and beyond
Sea-level science has seen many recent developments in observations and modelling of the different contributions and the total mean sea-level change. In this overview, we discuss (1) the evolution of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projections, (2) how the projections compare to observations and (3) the outlook for further improving projections. We start by discussing how the model projections of 21st century sea-level change have changed from the IPCC AR5 report (2013) to SROCC (2019) and AR6 (2021), highlighting similarities and differences in the methodologies and comparing the global mean and regional projections. This shows that there is good agreement in the median values, but also highlights some differences. In addition, we discuss how the different reports included high-end projections. We then show how the AR5 projections (from 2007 onwards) compare against the observations and find that they are highly consistent with each other. Finally, we discuss how to further improve sea-level projections using high-resolution ocean modelling and recent vertical land motion estimates
