Infiltration systems are widely used in urban stormwater management. Infiltration systems can significantly reduce stormwater discharges to sewer systems and may therefore contribute to the mitigation of flooding problems. In addition infiltrations systems also help to reduce stormwater pollution, contribute to groundwater recharge and to water course protection. However, the hydraulic performance of infiltration systems decreases with time due to clogging effects. A clogged layer limits the transfer of water and pollutants in infiltrations systems. The clogging has a significant impact on the long-term performance of a system. The aim of this PhD study is to better understand spatio-temporal evolution of clogging on large infiltration systems involving different scales: (i) global scale, (ii) semi - global (the whole bottom and the sides), (iii) local scale (different part of the bottom). An experimental approach has been carried out in the OTHU project (Field Observatory on Urban Hydrology, www.othu.org). An infiltration basin studied with three investigations scales under real operation conditions. In a global scale, the temporal clogging evolution of the system was evaluated in terms of hydraulic resistance. This clogging indicator was calibrated from Bouwer s model. Water inflow, TSS, COD, climatic factors (air temperature and solar energy), stormwater events and season variations were measured. The results describe the clogging evolution over 8 years. It indicates that vegetation may have a beneficial effect on infiltration capacity. In a semi global scale study, clogging evolution at the bottom and the sides, of the infiltration basin was evaluated. It proved that the clogging mainly occurs at the bottom, that is, the bottom was clogged fast and the clogging at the sides was slow. Local scale study, spatial distribution and temporal evolution of clogging at the bottom with in situ measurements during 2 years were investigated. The study characterised the clogged layer, with bio physic-chemical parameters (i.e., were investigated hydraulic conductivity, porosity, grain size, dry bulk density, organic matter and biomass content). This analyze compared also the role of different types of spontaneous vegetation. The result showed the high spatio-temporal heterogeneity on the infiltration surface. Efficiency of eight modified materials for As(V) removal from synthetic and real mine effluents
Arsenic (As) contamination is a major problem especially for active gold mine operations. In the present study, eight low-cost materials including biochar (B), Fe-loaded biochar (BF), activated biochar (BC), Fe-loaded activated biochar (BCF and BFC), thermally modified dolomite (MD), wood ash (WA), and modified wood ash (MWA) were comparatively used for the efficiency in As(V) removal from synthetic and real mine effluents, through batch and column testing. Batch adsorption tests were conducted in beakers with a ratio adsorbent material and As(V) synthetic and real solutions of 0.1 g: 10 mL at concentrations of 850 and 300 µg/L As, respectively. Column adsorption tests were performed in 3 reactors with As(V) concentration of up to 900 µg/L in contaminated neutral drainage (CND) collected from a local gold mine. Results from batch testing with synthetic effluents showed the best performance for As(V) removal in the following order: MD > WA > BCF > BF > BFC > MWA > BC > B. Consistent findings were obtained in batch and column testing with the real mine effluent. Although iron grafted biochars are good adsorbents, their performance for As(V) removal was limited probably because of the very low As concentration in this study. In the same time, MD was found to be the most efficient material for As(V) removal but the final pH must be monitored and eventually adjusted. As(V) was completely removed by MD in batch testing (99.9%) and column testing (99.6%) after>112 days to bellow the authorized monthly mean allowed by Canadian discharge criteria. Thus, MD seems to be the most efficient material among the tested ones for the removal of As(V) in batch and column testing from synthetic and mine effluents

Spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment ecotoxicity in urban stormwater retention basins: Methodological approach and application to a pilot site close to Lyon in France
International audienceTo characterize the spatio-temporal variation of sediment ecotoxicity in a retention/detention basin, a monitoring program using the Heterocypris incongruens bioassay was carried out for 72 months (5 years) on a field basin close to Lyon in France. Results showed that the variation of ecotoxicity is relatively small from one location of the basin to another, apart from sediment sampling collected in an open-air chamber located in basin supposed to collect gross pollutants and hydrocarbons. Regarding the temporal variation of ecotoxicity, the bioassays also showed a slight variation between 6 and 72 months. On the contrary, they highlighted the high ecotoxicity of the “fresh” sediments collected during rain events using sediment traps. Additional investigations are needed to understand the period of inflexion of ecotoxicity, occurring between 24 h and 6 months. These results can be used by practitioners of urban facilities and networks to improve maintenance strategies of retention/detention basins
Computational fluid dynamics modelling of flow and particulate contaminants sedimentation in an urban stormwater detention and settling basin
International audienceSedimentation is a common but complex phenomenon in the urban drainage system. The settling mechanisms involved in detention basins are still not well understood. The lack of knowledge on sediment transport and settling processes in actual detention basins is still an obstacle to the optimization of the design and the management of the stormwater detention basins. In order to well understand the sedimentation processes, in this paper, a new boundary condition as an attempt to represent the sedimentation processes based on particle tracking approach is presented. The proposed boundary condition is based on the assumption that the flow turbulent kinetic energy near the bottom plays an important role on the sedimentation processes. The simulated results show that the proposed boundary condition appears as a potential capability to identify the referential sediment zones and to predict the trapping efficiency of the basin during storm events
