Rotation and Macroturbulence in Metal-poor Field Red Giant and Red Horizontal Branch Stars
We report the results for rotational velocities, Vrot sin i, and
macroturbulence dispersion, zeta(RT), for 12 metal-poor field red giant branch
stars and 7 metal-poor field red horizontal branch stars. The results are based
on Fourier transform analyses of absorption line profiles from high-resolution
(R ~ 120,000), high-S/N (~ 215 per pixel) spectra obtained with the Gecko
spectrograph at CFHT. We find that the zeta(RT) values for the metal-poor RGB
stars are very similar to those for metal-rich disk giants studied earlier by
Gray and his collaborators. Six of the RGB stars have small rotational values,
less than 2.0 km/sec, while five show significant rotation, over 3 km/sec. The
fraction of rapidly rotating RHB stars is somewhat lower than found among BHB
stars. We devise two empirical methods to translate the line-broadening results
obtained by Carney et al. (2003, 2008) into Vrot sin i for all the RGB and RHB
stars they studied. Binning the RGB stars by luminosity, we find that most
metal-poor field RGB stars show no detectable sign, on average, of rotation.
However, the most luminous stars, with M(V) <= -1.5, do show net rotation, with
mean values of 2 to 4 km/sec, depending on the algorithm employed, and these
stars also show signs of radial velocity jitter and mass loss.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journa
Learning (and Teaching) On The Job: Developing and Extending the Skills Needed to Deliver Information Literacy Workshops
This article aims to bolster confidence in early career librarians or other information professionals who may be new to delivering presentations to student groups. By sharing their experiences, three librarians discuss the skills needed and show that these skills can be developed. Rotational velocities of the giants in symbiotic stars: III. Evidence of fast rotation in S-type symbiotics
We have measured the projected rotational velocities (vsini) in a number of
symbiotic stars and M giants using high resolution spectroscopic observations.
On the basis of our measurements and data from the literature, we compare the
rotation of mass-donors in symbiotics with vsini of field giants and find that:
(1) the K giants in S-type symbiotics rotate at vsini>4.5 km/s, which is 2-4
times faster than the field K giants;
(2) the M giants in S-type symbiotics rotate on average 1.5 times faster than
the field M giants. Statistical tests show that these differences are highly
significant: p-value < 0.001 in the spectral type bins K2III-K5III,
M0III-M6III, and M2III-M5III;
(3) our new observations of D'-type symbiotics also confirm that they are
fast rotators.
As a result of the rapid rotation, the cool giants in symbiotics should have
3-30 times larger mass loss rates. Our results suggest also that bipolar
ejections in symbiotics seem to happen in objects where the mass donors rotate
faster than the orbital period.

Classifying the embedded young stellar population in Perseus and Taurus & the LOMASS database
Context. The classification of young stellar objects (YSOs) is typically done
using the infrared spectral slope or bolometric temperature, but either can
result in contamination of samples. More accurate methods to determine the
evolutionary stage of YSOs will improve the reliability of statistics for the
embedded YSO population and provide more robust stage lifetimes. Aims. We aim
to separate the truly embedded YSOs from more evolved sources. Methods. Maps of
HCO+ J=4-3 and C18O J=3-2 were observed with HARP on the James Clerk Maxwell
Telescope (JCMT) for a sample of 56 candidate YSOs in Perseus and Taurus in
order to characterize emission from high (column) density gas. These are
supplemented with archival dust continuum maps observed with SCUBA on the JCMT
and Herschel PACS to compare the morphology of the gas and dust in the
protostellar envelopes. The spatial concentration of HCO+ J=4-3 and 850 micron
dust emission are used to classify the embedded nature of YSOs. Results.
Approximately 30% of Class 0+I sources in Perseus and Taurus are not Stage I,
but are likely to be more evolved Stage II pre-main sequence (PMS) stars with
disks. An additional 16% are confused sources with an uncertain evolutionary
stage. Conclusions. Separating classifications by cloud reveals that a high
percentage of the Class 0+I sources in the Perseus star forming region are
truly embedded Stage I sources (71%), while the Taurus cloud hosts a majority
of evolved PMS stars with disks (68%). The concentration factor method is
useful to correct misidentified embedded YSOs, yielding higher accuracy for YSO
population statistics and Stage timescales. Current estimates (0.54 Myr) may
overpredict the Stage I lifetime on the order of 30%, resulting in timescales

The 1985 and 1986 direct strike lightning data, part 1
Data waveforms are presented which were obtained during the 1985 and 1986 direct-strike lightning tests utilizing the NASA F-106B aircraft specially instrumented for lightning electromagnetic measurement. The aircraft was operated in the vicinity of the NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia, in a thunderstorm environment in order to elicit lightning strikes. Increased HCO production in the outer disk around HD 163296
Three formaldehyde lines were observed (HCO 3--2, HCO
3--2, and HCO 3--2) in the protoplanetary disk
around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 with ALMA at 0.5 arcsecond (60 AU) spatial
resolution. HCO 3--2 was readily detected via imaging, while
the weaker HCO 3--2 and HCO 3--2 lines
required matched filter analysis to detect. HCO is present throughout most
of the gaseous disk, extending out to 550 AU. An apparent 50 AU inner radius of
the HCO emission is likely caused by an optically thick dust continuum. The
HCO radial intensity profile shows a peak at 100 AU and a secondary bump at
around 300 AU, suggesting increased production in the outer disk. Different
parameterizations of the HCO abundance were compared to the observed
visibilities with minimization, using either a characteristic
temperature, a characteristic radius or a radial power law index to describe
the HCO chemistry. Similar models were applied to ALMA Science Verification
data of CO. In all modeling scenarios, fits to the HCO data show an
increased abundance in the outer disk. The overall best-fit HCO model shows
a factor of two enhancement beyond a radius of 27020 AU, with an inner
abundance of . The HCO emitting region has a lower
limit on the kinetic temperature of K. The CO modeling suggests
an order of magnitude depletion in the outer disk and an abundance of in the inner disk. The increase in HCO outer disk emission
could be a result of hydrogenation of CO ices on dust grains that are then
sublimated via thermal desorption or UV photodesorption, or more efficient
gas-phase production beyond about 300 AU if CO is photodisocciated in this
region

Introduction: Widespread public health initiatives have led to falling smoking rates. Currently, 1,620 U.S. colleges have adopted smoke-free policies. In August 2015, the University of Vermont (UVM) adopted a tobacco-free policy that bans all forms of tobacco use on university property. Willingness To Donate Blood During the Summer
Introduction. Each year donation rates fall in the summer months straining blood banks’ capacities to meet local demands. In hopes of identifying factors to increase summer donations, our study investigated donor reported barriers which influence summer donations habits.Methods. An anonymous 16 question survey investigating various donation factors was administered across multiple American Red Cross (ARC) donation centers in Vermont. Questions addressed donor demographics, frequency of blood donation, preference in appointment making modalities including smartphone app use, summer travel habits, willingness to donate during vacation, and factors that deter donors from donating on vacation.Results. A total of 292 surveys were received. Survey respondents across multiple demographic groups cited similar barriers to summer donation, namely “Too busy” (27.5 %) and “Traveling is a time for me to relax.” (30.6 %). Of the respondents who travel in the summer, very few reported donating while traveling (3.4 %). Summer donation rates between summertime travelers (36.5 %) and non-travelers (36.4 %) were essentially equivalent. The most preferred methods of scheduling appointments were via ARC website (45.6 %) and phone (28.4%). Willingness to use the ARC app was highest among respondents ages of 18 to 34 (45-55%) and lowest among ages 55 and older (13-15%). Of respondents with no prior knowledge of summer seasonal shortages (22 %), 2/3rds indicated newfound motivation to donate.Conclusion. Regardless of travel, increasing awareness of summer shortages may increase summer donations.
