Preventing secondary traumatic stress in social workers: How to protect helping professionals

    Get PDF
Social workers are often asked to put the needs of others above their own. This, coupled with a propensity for social workers to engage with clients’ trauma, can lead to secondary traumatic stress (STS) disorder. This thesis explores how to better support social workers at individual, environmental, and organizational levels to predict and prevent STS. Based on a review of the literature, recommendations are made to improve social work policy, practice, and research. This analysis suggests that combatting STS must begin with social work students and continue through an individual’s career. Further research is required to inform the implementation of specific protective factors against STS

Middle Ordovician conodonts and graptolites at Los Cauquenes range, central Precordillera of San Juan, Argentina

The Ordovician System is superbly represented in the Precordillera of western Argentina, at the Andean foothills. During the Middle Ordovician, an important paleogeographical rearrangement of depocenters and source areas took place associated with the demise of the Eopaleozoic carbonate platform of the Precordillera. This critical interval is recorded in the basin through widespread deposition of black shales over the fossiliferous limestones of the San Juan Formation, punctuated by local deposition of olistostromes, debris flows, conglomerates, and turbidites (e.g., Astini et al., 1995; Keller, 1999). Fossil dating of the lowest black shales and equivalent units indicates a diachronous deposition from north to south in the Precordillera basin (Hünicken, 1985; Albanesi et al., 1998).Fil: Voldman, Gustavo Gabriel. This article aims to approximate systems of representation of the feminine through the Hollywood musical films exhibited in Spain during the 50s, using tools such as cultural and gender history, considering that the musical numbers are vital importance as they are the pieces which primarily establish and symbolize power relationships between female and male characters. As it´s well known, the Francoism gave women a fundamental role. Women became a key element in the social and economical policy of dominance, as they were the main tool to reproduce and consolidate the social basis of the «New State». In this sense, keeping in mind that the meanings of masculinity and feminity have been historically and culturally constructed and starting from the hypothesis that cinema is a social influence, it´s interesting to look into the female examples presented to Spanish women during the age through Hollywood films, given that going to the cinema by that time was one of the most popular ways of entertainment.

    Get PDF

AbstractOne of the basic objectives of the implementation of the European Higher Education Area is the achievement of employability in students based on quality higher education focused on learning skills.More and more college students need to acquire, develop and update a solid background at different levels (theoretical, practical and emotional). Indeed, the emotional components relating to the skills demanded by the current labour market play an important role in the achievement of a better and productive personal and professional career for students.Interest in emotional intelligence in the world of education and organizations is growing. There is a slow but progressive trend to consider it as a determining factor in productivity and employability. The use of emotional intelligence facilitates the affective-behavioural balance essential to facing the needs required by the current society. Emotional intelligence as an educational strategy contributes to enhancing emotional skills and employability in the labour activity

In this study chemical analyses and ecotoxicity tests were applied for the assessment of a heavily hydrocarbon-contaminated soil prior and after the application of a remediation procedure that consisted in the stimulation of soil autochthonous populations of hydrocarbon degraders in static-ventilated biopiles. Terrestrial bioassays were applied in mixtures of test soils and artificial control soil and studied the survival and reproduction of Eisenia fetida and the avoidance response of E. fetida and Folsomia candida. Effects on aquatic organisms were studied by means of acute tests with Vibrio fischeri, Raphidocelis subcapitata, and Daphnia magna performed on aqueous elutriates from test soils. The bioremediation procedure led to a significant reduction in the concentration of hydrocarbons (from 34264 to 3074 mg kg-1, i.e., 91 % decrease) and toxicity although bioassays were not able to report a percentage decrease of toxicity as high as the percentage reduction. Sublethal tests proved the most sensitive terrestrial bioassays and avoidance tests with earthworms and springtails showed potential as monitoring tools of hydrocarbon remediation due to their high sensitivity and short duration. The concentrations of hydrocarbons in water extracts from test soils were 130 and 100 µg L-1 before and after remediation, respectively. Similarly to terrestrial tests, most aquatic bioassays detected a significant reduction in toxicity, which was almost negligible at the end of the treatment. D. magna survival was the most affected by soil elutriates although toxicity to the crustacean was associated to the salinity of the samples rather than to the concentration of hydrocarbons. Ecotoxicity tests with aqueous soil elutriates proved less relevant in the assessment of hydrocarbon-contaminated soils due to the low hydrosolubility of hydrocarbons and the influence of the physicochemical parameters of the aquatic mediumPostprint (author's final draft

Anthropology and One Health: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Understanding Diseases Emergence

    Get PDF
“One Health” is a holistic vision of health based on its study and management under a transdisciplinary approach of different sciences. While health is understood as the result of a balance between a set of factors that affect the interface human-animal-environment, the disease is the result of an imbalanced interface on which human activities are determinant. Health promotion and disease prevention strategies should be based on understanding the human role in this interface at the population level. An overview of the most important epidemics (pandemics) along with the history and their risk factors, most of them linked to human activities, suggests the weight of social determinants in disease emergence and evolution. Anthropology is presented not only as the science contributing to explaining these human activities that imbalance the human, animal, and environment interface in epidemics, but also as science involved in the design of strategies to solve those diseases. Medical Anthropology, a subfield of Anthropology, working together with Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine in a transdisciplinary approach, can contribute to analyzing cultural determinants and designing social education and risk communication strategies for health promotion and disease prevention from a “One Health” point of view
