Automating Fine Concurrency Control in Object-Oriented Databases
Several propositions were done to provide adapted concurrency control to
object-oriented databases. However, most of these proposals miss the fact that
considering solely read and write access modes on instances may lead to less
parallelism than in relational databases! This paper cope with that issue, and
advantages are numerous: (1) commutativity of methods is determined a priori
and automatically by the compiler, without measurable overhead, (2) run-time
checking of commutativity is as efficient as for compatibility, (3) inverse
operations need not be specified for recovery, (4) this scheme does not
preclude more sophisticated approaches, and, last but not least, (5) relational
and object-oriented concurrency control schemes with read and write access
modes are subsumed under this proposition
Cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds
In spin geometry, traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds equipped
with a homogeneous spin structure can be viewed as the simplest manifolds after
Riemannian symmetric spin spaces. In this paper, we give some characterizations
and properties of cyclic and traceless cyclic homogeneous Riemannian manifolds
and we obtain the classification of simply-connected cyclic homogeneous
Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than or equal to four. We also present a
wide list of examples of non-compact irreducible Riemannian -symmetric
spaces admitting cyclic metrics and give the expression of these metrics
Improving the Evolutionary Coding for Machine Learning Tasks
The most influential factors in the quality of the solutions
found by an evolutionary algorithm are a correct coding of the
search space and an appropriate evaluation function of the potential
solutions. The coding of the search space for the obtaining of decision
rules is approached, i.e., the representation of the individuals of
the genetic population. Two new methods for encoding discrete and
continuous attributes are presented. Our “natural coding” uses one
gene per attribute (continuous or discrete) leading to a reduction in
the search space. Genetic operators for this approached natural coding
are formally described and the reduction of the size of the search
space is analysed for several databases from the UCI machine learning

Development of Head Space Sorptive Extraction Method for the Determination of Volatile Compounds in Beer and Comparison with Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction
A headspace sorptive extraction method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HSSE-GC-MS) was developed for the determination of 37 volatile compounds in beer. After optimization of the extraction conditions, the best conditions for the analysis were stirring at 1000 rpm for 180 min, using an 8-mL sample with 25% NaCl. The analytical method provided excellent linearity values (R-2 > 0.99) for the calibration of all the compounds studied, with the detection and quantification limits obtained being low enough for the determination of the compounds in the beers studied. When studying the repeatability of the method, it proved to be quite accurate, since RSD% values lower than 20% were obtained for all the compounds. On the other hand, the recovery study was successfully concluded, resulting in acceptable values for most of the compounds (80-120%). The optimised method was successfully applied to real beer samples of different types (ale, lager, stout and wheat). Finally, an analytical comparison of the optimised HSSE method, with a previously developed and validated stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) method was performed, obtaining similar concentration values by both methods for most compounds
Layer Selection in Progressive Transmission of Motion-Compensated JPEG2000 Video
MCJ2K (Motion-Compensated JPEG2000) is a video codec based on MCTF (Motion- Compensated Temporal Filtering) and J2K (JPEG2000). MCTF analyzes a sequence of images, generating a collection of temporal sub-bands, which are compressed with J2K. The R/D (Rate-Distortion) performance in MCJ2K is better than the MJ2K (Motion JPEG2000) extension, especially if there is a high level of temporal redundancy. MCJ2K codestreams can be served by standard JPIP (J2K Interactive Protocol) servers, thanks to the use of only J2K standard file formats. In bandwidth-constrained scenarios, an important issue in MCJ2K is determining the amount of data of each temporal sub-band that must be transmitted to maximize the quality of the reconstructions at the client side. To solve this problem, we have proposed two rate-allocation algorithms which provide reconstructions that are progressive in quality. The first, OSLA (Optimized Sub-band Layers Allocation), determines the best progression of quality layers, but is computationally expensive. The second, ESLA (Estimated-Slope sub-band Layers Allocation), is sub-optimal in most cases, but much faster and more convenient for real-time streaming scenarios. An experimental comparison shows that even when a straightforward motion compensation scheme is used, the R/D performance of MCJ2K competitive is compared not only to MJ2K, but also with respect to other standard scalable video codecs
Ground states of integrable quantum liquids
Based on a recently introduced operator algebra for the description of a
class of integrable quantum liquids we define the ground states for all
canonical ensembles of these systems. We consider the particular case of the
Hubbard chain in a magnetic field and chemical potential. The ground states of
all canonical ensembles of the model can be generated by acting onto the
electron vacuum (densities ), suitable
pseudoparticle creation operators. We also evaluate the energy gaps of the
non-lowest-weight states (non - LWS's) and non-highest-weight states (non -
HWS's) of the eta-spin and spin algebras relative to the corresponding ground
states. For all sectors of parameter space and symmetries the {\it exact ground
state} of the many-electron problem is in the pseudoparticle basis the
non-interacting pseudoparticle ground state. This plays a central role in the
pseudoparticle perturbation theory.Comment: RevteX 3.0, 43 pages, preprint Univ.Evora, Portuga
Applying model-driven paradigm: CALIPSOneo experience
Model-Driven Engineering paradigm is being used by the research community in the last years, obtaining suitable results. However, there are few practical experiences in the enterprise field. This paper presents the use of this paradigm in an aeronautical PLM project named CALIPSOneo currently under development in Airbus. In this context, NDT methodology was adapted as methodology in order to be used by the development team. The paper presents this process and the results that we are getting from the project. Besides, some relevant learned lessons from the trenches are concluded.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación TIN2010-20057-C03-02Junta de Andalucía TIC-578
