Deconstruction of Marriage: The Swedish Case

    Get PDF
The real debate is over the nature of marriage, and of society. The first model noted in this Article emphasizes variability and change. The second model sees marriage as an institution, universal in its basics. For consistent ideological reasons, Sweden\u27s socialists openly embraced the first model, because conventional marriage stood in the way of their collectivist ambitions. Marriage embodied a rival set of loyalties that prevented emergence of the desired androgynous individual dependent on the central state and forestalled the socialization of private life. Until recently, American debate over the meaning of marriage has been much more muddle than the one in Sweden. One positive result of the current U.S. controversy over same-sex marriage has been to clear the air, to reveal the real issues involved, and to clarify the predictable consequences of decisions soon to be made

While living through the challenges of two world wars and the Great Depression, Lilly Endowment founders, J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons, Eli and J.K. Jr., dedicated themselves and their company to helping meet the immediate needs of their employees, community and country while they continued to plan and build for the future. During the past extraordinarily challenging year, the Endowment attempted to follow their example by working to help meet various urgent needs in our city, state and country arising from the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing to help build brighter futures for individuals, families, organizations and communities through our ongoing grantmaking in community development, education and religion, the areas of focus established by our founders when they created the Endowment in 1937.The Endowment's COVID-19-related grantmaking in 2020, which totaled nearly $208 million, supported the inspirational efforts of hundreds of organizations that worked diligently to help meet urgent needs in Indianapolis, throughout Indiana and across the nation. This grantmaking also included funding for several organizations to make pandemic-related adjustments needed to continue to operate their important programs safely. This annual report also highlights other grants the Endowment approved in 2020 that support promising endeavors to build brighter, more prosperous futures for young children and college students in Indiana and that enhance the future vitality of the community of Indianapolis and communities throughout the state, as well as congregations and seminaries around the country

Putting knowledge to work in clinical practice: understanding experiences of preceptorship as outcomes of interconnected domains of learning.

AIM: To explore how preceptor support can assist newly qualified nurses (NQNs) to put knowledge to work across interconnected forms of knowledge when delegating to health care assistants (HCAs). BACKGROUND: Current literature on preceptorship in nursing has failed to explore how competence is underpinned by knowledge frameworks in clinical practice. DESIGN: An ethnographic case study in three hospital sites in England (2011-2014). METHODS: Data collection included participant observation, interviews with 33 newly qualified nurses, 10 HCAs and 12 ward managers. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. A tool to assist NQNs to delegate and supervise NQNs during the preceptorship period was developed and piloted with thirteen NQNs in the same sites. A process evaluation was undertaken. FINDINGS: Focusing on a key task for NQNS, delegation to HCAs, we argue that preceptorship can support NQNs as they put knowledge to work in the transition from qualifying student to NQN. In supportive ward cultures, limited access to formal preceptorship can be bolstered by team support. NQNs in less supportive ward cultures may have both a greater need for preceptorship and have fewer compensatory mechanisms available to them when formal preceptorship is not available. We argue that organisational learning contexts and individual learning styles (interconnected domains of learning) are key to understanding effective preceptorship. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that putting knowledge to work early in their careers with preceptorship support may assist NQNs to develop confidence and competence in delegation and supervision of health care assistants. Seeing like a standard: EU, sustainable biofuels, and land use change in Africa

Biofuels have expanded across the globe, generating a range of concerns in the places of production. One approach to controlling the effects of biofuel production has been sustainability standards. This article takes a ‘seeing like’ approach to analyse how the EU Sustainability standard contributes to narrowing the vision of what sustainable biofuels are. Six biofuel cases in Africa are examined through the lens of the standard, using remote sensing to investigate the criteria on land use and canopy cover change. The standard view is also compared to on ground views regarding the sustainability of the projects. The effects of seeing like the EU standard are two: 1) diluted seeing, which prioritises global environmental problems over more nuanced social and institutional aspects; and 2) distributed seeing, which transforms standardised sustainable biofuels into multiple, uncertain forms because of hybrid governance. High carbon losses due to biofuel projects were detected, but at the same time, the standard simplifies and skips over wider problems related to unsustainable biofuel projects
