    Get PDF

INTRODUCTION. Young students’ transition to higher education is a particularly challenging and a stressful event, likely to trigger emotions that can potentially a+ect their adaptation to a new and more demanding learning environment. This issue has been a focus of growing interest for researchers involved in mentorship programmes developed by higher education institutions, which are intended to contribute to a healthy integration of students and, consequently, promote academic inclusion and success. This project intends to understand the role of mentorship in promoting emotional competence and well-being of nursing students. METHODS. A research project of qualitative nature, with an analytical focus, using a sociopoetic approach. Participants will be nursing professors and students (second- year of the undergraduate degree) recruited from several public and private, Portuguese and Brazilian, nursing schools. The methodological procedure includes the creation of negotiation and data production workshops, data content analysis, counter-analysis workshop and socialisation of data production. CONCLUSIONS. We hope with this study to strengthen the relationship established with the mentor may constitute a healthier and more adaptative emotional experience, and potentiate generalization to other social contexts, improving daily life interpersonal skills and promoting emotional competence, essential to personal and professional development. This study will enable the development of the mentorship process in the higher education institutions involved in this type of project, grounded on the mentorees’ abilities to learn easily, to increase their socialisation and their networks, to develop feelings of organizational citizenship, to potentiate satisfaction with work and career, to improve their self-e8cacy and reduce their stress levels.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The relevance of the theme using the “complementary therapies” (TC) in the management of emotions and your impact on mental health of nursing students, focuses on the realization of our professional practice, as teachers, in different types of school, in There, students of the last year of the course, feel uncomfortable, as the expression of their emotions and feelings, which leads to high levels of anxiety, anguish and panic. Aims: to identify the complementary therapies facilitators in managing emotions and evaluate your effectiveness on mental health of students. Methodology: qualitative research Paradigm, using the sociopóetica perspective. The sample consists of 42 students of the fourth year of the Degree course in nursing, perform the clinical education of Mental Health and Psychiatry. Were held “workshops” of production data. Complied with all ethical assumptions of the investigation, in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration. Results and discussion: The content analysis performed, resulting in the appointment of four “complementary therapies”: guided imagination technique, body expression, therapeutic touch and music therapy. Conclusions: importance of this research to the education in nursing is the conception of that theory and clinical experience must be accompanied by educational strategies promoting TC in the management of emotions. To stress, students highlighted the use of music therapy as an asset in the expression of emotions and commented that the TC allow you to deal with emotions and promote your mental health over your career, personal and social.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Histopathology of Zebrafish (<em>Danio rerio</em>) in Nonclinical Toxicological Studies of New Drugs

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a small-sized teleost fish natural of tropical regions, with a short life cycle and high homology toward humans. These features make zebrafish an attractive and promising model organism for nonclinical tests due to the ease of handling and cost–benefit compared to other models. The digestive, cardiovascular, urinary, nervous, and reproductive systems of zebrafish display feature similar to those of superior mammals, and due to its susceptible organs, the adult zebrafish has been used to test the toxicity of environmental compounds and potential drug candidates through histopathology analysis complementarily with other parameters. In such cases, the choice of the organ assessed relies on the type of compound tested, administration route, and biological activity. This chapter brings together histopathological nonclinical toxicity studies performed exclusively with zebrafish, highlighting significant histological changes found in its gills, liver, kidneys, and intestine. Based on the information presented here, it is expected that the researcher recognizes differences between healthy and changed tissue, without having to compare its result with other species

On the use of a reflective architecture to augment Database Management Systems

    Get PDF
The Database Management System (DBMS) used to be a commodity software component, with well known standard interfaces and semantics. However, the performance and reliability expectations being placed on DBMSs have increased the demand for a variety add-ons, that augment the functionality of the database in a wide range of deployment scenarios, offering support for features such as clustering, replication, and selfmanagement, among others. The effectiveness of such extensions largely rests on closely matching the actual needs of applications, hence on a wide range of tradeoffs and configuration options out of the scope of traditional client interfaces. A well known software engineering approach to systems with such requirements is reflection. Unfortunately, standard reflective interfaces in DBMSs are very limited (for instance, they often do not support the desired range of atomicity guarantees in a distributed setting). Some of these limitations may be circumvented by implementing reflective features as a wrapper to the DBMS server. Unfortunately, this solutions comes at the expense of a large development effort and significant performance penalty. In this paper we propose a general purpose DBMS reflection architecture and interface, that supports multiple extensions while, at the same time, admitting efficient implementations. We illustrate the usefulness of our proposal with concrete examples, and evaluate its cost and performance under different implementation strategies

GORDA: an open architecture for database replication

    Get PDF
Database replication has been a common feature in database management systems (DBMSs) for a long time. In particular, asynchronous or lazy propagation of updates provides a simple yet efficient way of increasing performance and data availability and is widely available across the DBMS product spectrum. High end systems additionally offer sophisticated conflict resolution and data propagation options as well as, synchronous replication based on distributed locking and two-phase commit protocols. This paper presents GORDA architecture and programming interface (GAPI), that enables different replication strategies to be implemented once and deployed in multiple DBMSs. This is achieved by proposing a reflective interface to transaction processing instead of relying on-client interfaces or ad-hoc server extensions. The proposed approach is thus cost-effective, in enabling reuse of replication protocols or components in multiple DBMSs, as well as potentially efficient, as it allows close coupling with DBMS internals.(undefined

</span></p

    Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors in the failing heart : a growing potential

    Get PDF
© The Author(s) 2020Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are a new drug class designed to treat patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, cardiovascular outcome trials showed that SGLT2i also offer protection against heart failure (HF)–related events and cardiovascular mortality. These benefits appear to be independent of glycaemic control and have recently been demonstrated in the HF population with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), with or without T2D. This comprehensive, evidence-based review focuses on the published studies concerning HF outcomes with SGLT2i, discussing issues that may underlie the different results, along with the impact of these new drugs in clinical practice. The potential translational mechanisms behind SGLT2i cardio-renal benefits and the information that ongoing studies may add to the already existing body of evidence are also reviewed. Finally, we focus on practical management issues regarding SGLT2i use in association with other T2D and HFrEF common pharmacological therapies. Safety considerations are also highlighted. Considering the paradigm shift in T2D management, from a focus on glycaemic control to a broader approach on cardiovascular protection and event reduction, including the potential for wide SGLT2i implementation in HF patients, with or without T2D, we are facing a promising time for major changes in the global management of cardiovascular disease. This paper had a non-restrictive financial support of Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
