This article is a summary of the documents produced by the Iberoamerican Network of Digital Communication (Red ICOD in Spanish) in the context of the «Digital Communicators» project of the ALFA Programme (EU). The main objective of the ICOD network was to develop proposals for accelerating the adaptation of communication studies in the new digital context. In this sense the network analysed study programs and compared the situation of the ICOD network countries (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Portugal, France, Italy and Spain). The network also developed a research to define the profile of the communication professional in the digital age, that concluded with the creation of a map of skills. Finally, the network analysed different case-histories to exemplify the application of digital technology in communication studies

Transmedia Storytelling: Implicit Consumers, Narrative Worlds, and Branding in Contemporary Media Production

    Get PDF
Many concepts have been developed to describe the convergence of media, languages, and formats in contemporary media systems. This article is a theoretical reflection on “transmedia storytelling” from a perspective that integrates semiotics and narratology in the context of media studies. After dealing with the conceptual chaos around transmedia storytelling, the article analyzes how these new multimodal narrative structures create different implicit consumers and construct a narrative world. The analysis includes a description of the multimedia textual structure created around the Fox television series 24. Finally, the article analyzes transmedia storytelling from the perspective of a semiotics of branding

This paper proposes to reflect from a semiotic perspective on the transformation that brands have undergone since the rise of the Internet. After a brief theoretical introduction to digital communication and the semiotics of brands, the case of the Google brand is analyzed by applying concepts of generative and interpretive semiotics. The paper holds that the iconic and linguistic enunciations are secondary with respect to interaction. In digital media interaction — the interactive experience that the Internet user lives — is a fundamental component of the hypermedia cocktail and occupies a central position in the brand building process. The article concludes with some of the questions and special characteristics raised by so-called eBranding

In media(tization) studies we love metaphors

The long history of mass communication theories is full of metaphors, from Shannon and Weaver’s ‘transmission channel’ to Noelle-Neumann’s ‘spiral of silence’. The objective of the chapter is to give an overview of the use of metaphors and models in mediatized communication studies. Special attention is given to the metaphors that support the representations of digital and interactive communication practices; in this context, the chapter deals with the metaphors of the Internet, the World Wide Web, and new platforms and introduces the main metaphors of media change. The chapter concludes with a series of reflections on the risks and benefits of metaphorical reasoning and includes a call for ‘metaphorical experimentation’.A longa história das teorias da comunicação de massa é cheia de metáforas: do “canal de transmissão” de Shannon e Weaver à “espiral do silêncio” de Noelle-Neumann.

Digital communication. Memories of the future

A reflection on the emergence of new forms of interactive digital media in the late twentieth century is proposed. Presented as a historical account written in the future, the main mutations experienced by the media ecosystem from the emergence of digital technologies and global networks are described. From a historical perspective the contemporary period is presented as an unintelligible and often contradictory period similar to other phase transitions, such as the Renaissance (XV-XVI century) or the Industrial Revolution (XVIII-XIX). The text also describes some of the theoretical implications and the most salient debates of that period

From clay tablets to digital tablets: the evolution of emagazines

The text analyses the emergence of digital publications designed for the new portable devices with touchscreen. If in the last 30 years the universe of written text went through a mutation from paper to screens, now we are seeing a further stage of this process that recombines these interfaces, the old devices dialogue with the new ones and texts reside in new ‘species’ of hybrid media. The arrival of the emagazines is analysed from a perspective that integrates semiotics of interfaces and media ecology

The research, here presented, proposes a critical analysis of instrumental approaches in Human-Computer Interaction (HCJ). From a semiotic point of view, interfaces are not "tools" that "disappear" during interaction, but rather complex devices that constraint users to co-operate with designers and to contract with them for the sense of the interaction process
