    Banking and finance in Argentina in the period 1900-35

    From 1900 to 1935, Argentina evolved from an economy highly dependent on external, primarily British, finance to one more nearly self-sufficient. We examine the failure of domestic finance to adequately fill the void left by the decline of London and the breakdown of the world financial system in the interwar period, when neither the Buenos Aires Bolsa nor the private domestic banks developed rapidly enough to fully replace British investors as efficient channels for financing private investment. One consequence is that Argentine investable funds were increasingly concentrated in a single institution, the Banco de la Nacion Argentina (BNA), creating a lopsided financial structure that was vulnerable to rent seeking and to authoritarian capture. Nevertheless, several measures, including gold reserves, interest rates, money supply, bank credit, and the market capitalization of domestic corporations, attest to the very high level of financial development achieved by Argentina. ; Economic Research Working Paper 0108Financial crises - Latin America

    Economic growth in Argentina in the period 1900-30: some evidence from stock returns

    This paper reports the first stage of a project to recover Argentine stock market data for the entire 20th century. The authors find that real rates of return on Argentine stocks and bonds after 1920 were above those in the Belle Époque, and that they were consistent with the view that in the postwar period Argentina remained firmly integrated with international financial markets.Argentina

    Carrier recombination dynamics in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells

    We have mesured the carrier recombination dynamics in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells over an unprecedented range in intensity. We find that at times shorter than 30\,ns, they follow an exponential form, and a power law at times longer than 1\,μ\mus. To explain these biphasic dynamics, we propose a simple three-level model where a charge-separated state interplays with the radiative state through charge transfer following a tunneling mechanism. We show how the distribution of distances in charge-separated states controls the dynamics at long time. Our results imply that charge recombination happens on nearly-isolated clusters of localization centers.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PHYSICAL REVIEW

    Maximum gravitational recoil

    Recent calculations of gravitational radiation recoil generated during black-hole binary mergers have reopened the possibility that a merged binary can be ejected even from the nucleus of a massive host galaxy. Here we report the first systematic study of gravitational recoil of equal-mass binaries with equal, but anti-aligned, spins parallel to the orbital plane. Such an orientation of the spins is expected to maximize the recoil. We find that recoil velocity (which is perpendicular to the orbital plane) varies sinusoidally with the angle that the initial spin directions make with the initial linear momenta of each hole and scales up to a maximum of ~4000 km/s for maximally-rotating holes. Our results show that the amplitude of the recoil velocity can depend sensitively on spin orientations of the black holes prior to merger.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figs, revtex

    A Distributed Sensor Data Search Platform for Internet of Things Environments

    Recently, the number of devices has grown increasingly and it is hoped that, between 2015 and 2016, 20 billion devices will be connected to the Internet and this market will move around 91.5 billion dollars. The Internet of Things (IoT) is composed of small sensors and actuators embedded in objects with Internet access and will play a key role in solving many challenges faced in today's society. However, the real capacity of IoT concepts is constrained as the current sensor networks usually do not exchange information with other sources. In this paper, we propose the Visual Search for Internet of Things (ViSIoT) platform to help technical and non-technical users to discover and use sensors as a service for different application purposes. As a proof of concept, a real case study is used to generate weather condition reports to support rheumatism patients.     A Hybrid Adaptive Routing Algorithm for Event-Driven Wireless Sensor Networks

    Routing is a basic function in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). For these networks, routing algorithms depend on the characteristics of the applications and, consequently, there is no self-contained algorithm suitable for every case. In some scenarios, the network behavior (traffic load) may vary a lot, such as an event-driven application, favoring different algorithms at different instants. This work presents a hybrid and adaptive algorithm for routing in WSNs, called Multi-MAF, that adapts its behavior autonomously in response to the variation of network conditions. In particular, the proposed algorithm applies both reactive and proactive strategies for routing infrastructure creation, and uses an event-detection estimation model to change between the strategies and save energy. To show the advantages of the proposed approach, it is evaluated through simulations. Comparisons with independent reactive and proactive algorithms show improvements on energy consumption

    Introduction: The use of Papanicoloau Conventional Cytology (CC) versus Liquid Base (CBL), the professional who performs the extraction, first reading and diagnosis of the sample; the use of the Bethesda classification, the detection of HPV DNA and the follow-up of ASCUS findings are links in the screening of Uterine Cervical Cancer (CCU) little studied in our environment. Objective: To determine the characteristics of the CCU cancer screening in 08 health facilities (EESS) of Metropolitan Lima, the headquarters of the Medical Board of the FAMURP in 2017. Methods: Descriptive, transversal. Sampling for convenience. The Chiefs of Pathology Services were interviewed. Results: 8 EESS of Level III of the MINSA, EsSalud and FFAA participated. All performed the CC, none CBL. The samples are taken by the Gynecologist or the Obstetrician, and in 1 case by nursing, the first reading is performed by the Medical Technologist and in one case by the Pathologist Analyst; the diagnosis, by the Anatomopathologist. The Bethesda System is used for the Final Report. Screening tests for HPV DNA are not used. In 8, follow-up is done for ASCUS findings. Conclusion: CBL, automated reading, and identification of HPV DNA are not implemented. It is recommended to carry out cost-effective studies to propose their future implementation, and to carry out studies regarding the phases of the screening process.   DOI:  10.25176/RFMH.v19.n1.1788Introduccion: El uso de Citología Convencional de Papanicoloau (CC) frente a Base Líquida (CBL), el profesional que realiza la extracción, primera lectura y diagnóstico de la muestra; el uso de la clasificación Bethesda, la detección de ADN del VPH y el seguimiento de hallazgos ASCUS son eslabones en el tamizaje del Cáncer del Cuello Uterino (CCU) poco estudiadas en nuestro medio. Objetivo: Determinar las características del tamizaje para cáncer CCU en 08 establecimientos de salud (EESS) de Lima Metropolitana sedes del Internado Médico de la FAMURP en el 2017. Métodos: Descriptivo, transversal. Muestreo por conveniencia. Se entrevistó a los Jefes de los Servicios de Patología. Resultados: Participaron 8 EESS de Nivel III del MINSA, EsSalud y FFAA. Todos realizaron la CC, ninguno CBL. Las muestras son extraídas por el Ginecólogo o la Obstetriz, y en 1 caso por enfermería, la primera lectura es realizada por el Tecnólogo Médico y en un caso por el Anátomo Patólogo; el diagnóstico, por el Anátomo Patólogo. Se usa el Sistema de Bethesda para el Reporte Final. No se usan pruebas de detección para ADN del VPH. En 8, se hace seguimiento para hallazgos ASCUS. Conclusión: La CBL, la lectura automatizada, y la identificación del ADN de VPH no están implementados. Se recomienda realizar estudios costo-efectivo para proponer su implementación futura, y realizar estudios respecto de las fases del proceso del Tamizaje.   DOI:  10.25176/RFMH.v19.n1.178
