A Autocaptura Ventricular e o Aumento da Longevidade da Bateria do Marcapasso
Uma das grandes restriçoes para o aumento da longevidade dos marcapassos é a necessidade de grandes quantidades de energia (acima do limiar de estimulaçao) para garantir uma estimulaçao segura. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a performance de um algoritmo baseado na presença ou ausência do potencial evocado pós-estimulaçao ventricular, que permite reduzir com segurança a energia do pulso do marcapasso a valores próximos do limiar crônico de estimulaçao. Entre Janeiro e Agosto de 1997 um marcapasso Logos DDD (Biotronik), que apresenta este algoritmo foi instalado, em 10 pacientes, sendo 7 do sexo masculino e 3 do sexo feminino. Pela análise do algoritmo constatou-se a efetividade do auto-teste no controle da captura ventricular, bem como a confiabilidade e a segurança na estimulaçao através da análise do Holter 24 horas. Verificou-se assim que é possível aumentar com segurança a longevidade do marcapasso através da diminuiçao da energia do pulso

Prospective, randomized trial comparing fluids and dobutamine optimization of oxygen delivery in high-risk surgical patients [ISRCTN42445141]
INTRODUCTION: Preventing perioperative tissue oxygen debt contributes to a better postoperative recovery. Whether the beneficial effects of fluids and inotropes during optimization of the oxygen delivery index (DO(2)I) in high-risk patients submitted to major surgeries are due to fluids, to inotropes, or to the combination of the two is not known. We aimed to investigate the effect of DO(2)I optimization with fluids or with fluids and dobutamine on the 60-day hospital mortality and incidence of complications. METHODS: A randomized and controlled trial was performed in 50 high-risk patients (elderly with coexistent pathologies) undergoing major elective surgery. Therapy consisted of pulmonary artery catheter-guided hemodynamic optimization during the operation and 24 hours postoperatively using either fluids alone (n = 25) or fluids and dobutamine (n = 25), aiming to achieve supranormal values (DO(2)I > 600 ml/minute/m(2)). RESULTS: The cardiovascular depression was an important component in the perioperative period in this group of patients. Cardiovascular complications in the postoperative period occurred significantly more frequently in the volume group (13/25, 52%) than in the dobutamine group (4/25, 16%) (relative risk, 3.25; 95% confidence interval, 1.22–8.60; P < 0.05). The 60-day mortality rates were 28% in the volume group and 8% in the dobutamine group (relative risk, 3.00; 95% confidence interval, 0.67–13.46; not significant). CONCLUSION: In patients with high risk of perioperative death, pulmonary artery catheter-guided hemodynamic optimization using dobutamine determines better outcomes, whereas fluids alone increase the incidence of postoperative complications
Magnetoliposomes containing calcium ferrite nanoparticles for applications in breast cancer therapy
Magnetoliposomes containing calcium ferrite (CaFe2O4) nanoparticles were developed and characterized for the first time. CaFe2O4 nanoparticles were covered by a lipid bilayer or entrapped in liposomes forming, respectively, solid or aqueous magnetoliposomes as nanocarriers for new antitumor drugs. The magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by UV/Visible absorption, XRD, HR-TEM, and SQUID, exhibiting sizes of 5.2 ± 1.2 nm (from TEM) and a superparamagnetic behavior. The magnetoliposomes were characterized by DLS and TEM. The incorporation of two new potential antitumor drugs (thienopyridine derivatives) specifically active against breast cancer in these nanosystems was investigated by fluorescence emission and anisotropy. Aqueous magnetoliposomes, with hydrodynamic diameters around 130 nm, and solid magnetoliposomes with sizes of ca. 170 nm, interact with biomembranes by fusion and are able to transport the antitumor drugs with generally high encapsulation efficiencies (70%). Anthracological evidence suggests naturalness of Pinus pinaster in inland southwestern Iberia
The study of well-preserved archaeological charcoals in the pre-Roman Iron Age settlement of Castillejos II (Badajoz, Spain) is used to reconstruct environmental conditions and land-use practices in vegetation landscapes in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula before the arrival of Roman civilization. The results support that, while evergreen Quercus forests dominated during the Holocene, Pinus pinaster existed as a natural element of southwestern Iberian Peninsula vegetation. Although its presence could be linked to anthropogenic disturbance or fire history, it is suggested that P. pinaster populations survived during the Holocene in the region, mixed with oaks or in monospecific stands in mountain enclaves. This hypothesis contrasts with previous assumptions that P. pinaster was not autochthonous in the area
The BINGO Project VI: HI Halo Occupation Distribution and Mock Building

MHz, observe the neutral Hydrogen (HI) 21-cm line and detect BAO (Baryon
Acoustic Oscillation) signal with Intensity Mapping technique. Here we present

The BINGO Project IV: Simulations for mission performance assessment and preliminary component separation steps
The large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Universe is
luminous through its 21 cm emission. The goal of the Baryon Acoustic
Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations -- BINGO -- radio
telescope is to detect baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) at radio frequencies
through 21 cm intensity mapping (IM). The telescope will span the redshift
range 0.127 0.449 with an instantaneous field-of-view of . In this work we investigate different constructive and
operational scenarios of the instrument by generating sky maps as they would be
produced by the instrument. In doing this we use a set of end-to-end IM mission
simulations. The maps will additionally be used to evaluate the efficiency of a
component separation method (GNILC). We have simulated the kind of data that
would be produced in a single-dish IM experiment such as BINGO. According to
the results obtained, we have optimized the focal plane design of the
telescope. In addition, the application of the GNILC method on simulated data
shows that it is feasible to extract the cosmological signal across a wide
range of multipoles and redshifts. The results are comparable with the standard

Data standardization of plant-pollinator interactions
Background: Animal pollination is an important ecosystem function and service, ensuring both the integrity of natural systems and human well-being. Although many knowledge shortfalls remain, some high-quality data sets on biological interactions are now available. The development and adoption of standards for biodiversity data and metadata has promoted great advances in biological data sharing and aggregation, supporting large-scale studies and science-based public policies. However, these standards are currently not suitable to fully support interaction data sharing. Results: Here we present a vocabulary of terms and a data model for sharing plant–pollinator interactions data based on the Darwin Core standard. The vocabulary introduces 48 new terms targeting several aspects of plant–pollinator interactions and can be used to capture information from different approaches and scales. Additionally, we provide solutions for data serialization using RDF, XML, and DwC-Archives and recommendations of existing controlled vocabularies for some of the terms. Our contribution supports open access to standardized data on plant–pollinator interactions. Conclusions: The adoption of the vocabulary would facilitate data sharing to support studies ranging from the spatial and temporal distribution of interactions to the taxonomic, phenological, functional, and phylogenetic aspects of plant–pollinator interactions. We expect to fill data and knowledge gaps, thus further enabling scientific research on the ecology and evolution of plant–pollinator communities, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the development of public policies. The proposed data model is flexible and can be adapted for sharing other types of interactions data by developing discipline-specific vocabularies of terms.Fil: Salim, José A. Rarity of monodominance in hyperdiverse Amazonian forests.
Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such "monodominant" forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors
