An annotated check list of the Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromorpha (Hemiptera) of the Madeira and Salvages archipelagos

    Get PDF
The volcanic archipelagos of Madeira and Salvages located respectively at 635 km and 373 km offshore of the north eastern African coast are very rich in endemic species. These two archipelagos together with the Canary Ils and the archi pelagos of Cape Verde and Azores represent part of the Mediterranean hot spot which is considered the richest area in flora and fauna of Europe. To synthesize the knowledge on these groups, an annotated checklist of Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromorpha of the archipelagos of Salvages and Madeira is presented based on published literature including data on distribution and food plants. In addition 9 new species records are reported: Austragallia caboverdensis, Austragallia sinuata, Balclutha rufofascia, B. hebe, Cicadella viridis, Macrosteles sexnotatus, Recilia angusticeps, Tamaricella cf fas ciolata and Zyginidia lineata. The checklist comprises 79 species of 7 different families. Of these species 87% occur in Madeira and 10% in the Salvages archipelago. As a whole 27% are endemic to Madeira and 8% are endemic to Macaro nesia. Despite this diversity, knowledge of their habitats and food plants is still very scarce.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

New fossil record of Lactoridaceae in southern South America: A palaeobiogeographical approach

    Get PDF
Lactoridaceae are a monotypic family confined to Masatierra Island, Juan Fernández Archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean. It grows in the understorey of a subtropical montane rain forest. Lactoridaceae most probably originated in southern South Africa in the Cretaceous, with the oldest records in the Turonian-Campanian, and reached its widest palaeogeographical distribution by the Maastrichtian, extending into Australia, India, Antarctica, and North and South America. In this paper, we report a new fossil find of lactoridaceous tetrads from the early Miocene of eastern Patagonia, southern South America. This record is the youngest and geographically one of the closest to the extant Lactoris distribution area. Patagonian fossil material shows greater similarities to extant L. fernandeziana Phil. than to any other described morphotaxon. The family may have migrated into South America, either via Africa (through the Atlantic Ocean) or Antarctica, by the Maastrichtian, growing in eastern Patagonia up to the early Miocene. Arid conditions established in this region by the middle-late Miocene onwards would have determined the restriction of forests to the western lands. Lactoridaceae may have followed a similar migration pattern towards the Pacific coast of South America. The shifting of Lactoridaceae towards Masatierra Island would have occurred in the last 4 Myr by long-distance dispersal events (perhaps by birds).Fil: Gamerro, Juan Carlos. Controlo de actuadores electromecânicos com incremento de tolerância a defeitos

    Get PDF

Multifunctional Activity of the β-Defensin-2 during Respiratory Infections

    Get PDF
Human β-defensin-2 is a small cationic peptide that is part of the innate and adaptive immunity. It is expressed mainly in the epithelium and has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi and viruses. In addition to its antimicrobial activity, it has other biological functions. The alteration of the expression of β-defensin-2 in the respiratory epithelium has been associated with the pathogenesis of several respiratory diseases such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, rhinitis, etc. The acute respiratory infections caused by viruses are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world; there are few studies and it is necessary to study this peptide to understand its role in the viral pathogenesis. In addition, it also becomes relevant in its potential to take advantage of its properties in the development of alternative therapies that allow the prevention or treatment of viral respiratory infections

Experimental infection with Tritrichomonas suis in heifers

    Get PDF
Nine heifers were intravaginally challenged with 9.3 × 106 Tritrichomonas suis reference strains. Vaginal mucus and serum samples were collected weekly 4 weeks post-inoculation. Vaginal mucus was cultured for T. suis and sera was tested by ELISA against whole cell antigens for T. suis and Tritrichomonas foetus. All vaginal mucus cultures were T. suis-negative during the experiment. ELISA values for both antigens were similar and differences were not significant (P > 0.05). Positive control serum samples from one heifer vaccinated against T. foetus showed anti-T. suis ELISA values. We concluded that T. suis intravaginal inoculation induced a low level of serum immune response in heifers measured by ELISA and both protozoa probably share a common antigen. However, under the experimental conditions of this trial, colonization of the heifers' genital tract was not possible in any of the nine animals. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.Fil: Cobo, Eduardo Ruben. Aportes de la mayéutica socrática a la educación dialógica

    Get PDF
Education has a vast history that has made it go through different epistemological, pragmatic, and ontological positions, which has enriched his theoretical and practical heritage. One of the sciences in which education has been based to reflect on its being and its doing is the philosophy. Specifically, one of these currents basis is the philosophical thought on dialogue, that has helped to strengthen the trend of dialogical education both from its contribution and from its criticism, aspects inherent to philosophical reflection. However, it is evident that this trend of education has not sufficiently considered the position of Socratic maieutic in its reflection. For this reason, this article aims to propose some elements for dialogical education from the study of Socratic maieutic, for which a qualitative approach and hermeneutic methodology is used. The main results of the research show that dialogical education broadens its horizon from the Socratic assumptions of maieutic in two aspects: in the first place, maieutic invites to recover the question and the ability to ask oneself, and, secondly, it demonstrates that knowledge, to be significant, must be a conquest and discovery of the student himself mediated by dialogue with himself, with others and with the other.

A bibliographic catalogue of the Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromorpha of North East Spain (Aragon)

    Get PDF
The knowledge of a large number of Iberian Peninsula Hemiptera such as Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromopha is still fragmentary. Nevertheless, these two groups are especially remarkable because many species are endemic to this region while others are pests and/or vectors of diseases to cultivated plants. Therefore, information on these Hemiptera is important not only for conservation purposes, but also necessary for agricultural pest management. Within Spain, Aragon -located in the northeast of the country- is especially interesting due to the great diversity of habitats, rich flora and the strategic geographic position. For this political re gion, a bibliographic catalogue of Cicadomorpha and Fulgoromopha is here compiled. The results show that 136 species of 12 of the 15 families present in Iberian Peninsula have been reported in Aragon in previous works. Of these species, 17 percent are en demic to Spain and 15 percent were never mentioned in previous catalogues or checklists for the whole Iberian Peninsula. These results although exciting are clearly insufficient if we consider that several hundreds of species should be expected in this area; clearly more work should be done.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
