    Quantum fluctuations in high field magnetization of 2D square lattice J1-J2 antiferromagnets

    The J1-J2 square lattice Heisenberg model with spin S=1/2 has three phases with long-range magnetic order and two unconventionally ordered phases depending on the ratio of exchange constants. It describes a number of recently found layered vanadium oxide compounds. A simple means of investigating the ground state is the study of the magnetization curve and high-field susceptibility. We discuss these quantities by using the spin-wave theory and the exact diagonalization in the whole J1-J2 plane. We compare both results and find good overall agreement in the sectors of the phase diagram with magnetic order. Close to the disordered regions the magnetization curve shows strong deviations from the classical linear behaviour caused by large quantum fluctuations and spin-wave approximation breaks down. On the FM side (J1<0) where one approaches the quantum gapless spin nematic ground state this region is surprisingly large. We find that inclusion of second order spin-wave corrections does not lead to fundamental improvement. Quantum corrections to the tilting angle of the ordered moments are also calculated. They may have both signs, contrary to the always negative first order quantum corrections to the magnetization. Finally we investigate the effect of the interlayer coupling and find that the quasi-2D picture remains valid up to |J_\perp/J1| ~ 0.3.Comment: 13 pages, 6figure

    On the Energy Dependence of the Dipole-Proton Cross Section in Deep Inelastic Scattering

    We study the dipole picture of high-energy virtual-photon-proton scattering. It is shown that different choices for the energy variable in the dipole cross section used in the literature are not related to each other by simple arguments equating the typical dipole size and the inverse photon virtuality, contrary to what is often stated. We argue that the good quality of fits to structure functions that use Bjorken-x as the energy variable - which is strictly speaking not justified in the dipole picture - can instead be understood as a consequence of the sign of scaling violations that occur for increasing Q^2 at fixed small x. We show that the dipole formula for massless quarks has the structure of a convolution. From this we obtain derivative relations between the structure function F_2 at large and small Q^2 and the dipole-proton cross section at small and large dipole size r, respectively.Comment: 27 page

    Boundary State from Ellwood Invariants

    Boundary states are given by appropriate linear combinations of Ishibashi states. Starting from any OSFT solution and assuming Ellwood conjecture we show that every coefficient of such a linear combination is given by an Ellwood invariant, computed in a slightly modified theory where it does not trivially vanish by the on-shell condition. Unlike the previous construction of Kiermaier, Okawa and Zwiebach, ours is linear in the string field, it is manifestly gauge invariant and it is also suitable for solutions known only numerically. The correct boundary state is readily reproduced in the case of known analytic solutions and, as an example, we compute the energy momentum tensor of the rolling tachyon from the generalized invariants of the corresponding solution. We also compute the energy density profile of Siegel-gauge multiple lump solutions and show that, as the level increases, it correctly approaches a sum of delta functions.     Epithelioid variant of pleomorphic liposarcoma as potential mimic of metastatic carcinoma

    We report a case of epithelioid variant of pleomorphic liposarcoma (EPL) found in the the infrapatellar fat pad of Hoffa of a 31-year old male. Histologically, the predominant population was formed by epithelioid cells with eosinophilic or clear cytoplasm admixed with rare pleomorphic lipoblasts. The immunohistochemical panel was not helpful in the diagnosis. FISH analysis using the locus-specific indicator CHOP (12q13) dual color break apart was applied to representative formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. The result of FISH indicated a rearranged CHOP (DDIT3) gene and confirmed the diagnosis of EPL. The EPL should be differentiated from a metastatic carcinoma or other type of sarcoma. In these cases a clinicopathological correlation and an exhaustive sampling of the specimen for demonstration of lipogenic areas or pleomorphic lipoblasts is always necessary. FISH with demonstration of CHOP gene rearrangement is useful in providing specific ancillary information for the difficult differential diagnosis of this case

    Risk adjustment for inter-hospital comparison of primary cesarean section rates: need, validity and parsimony

    BACKGROUND: Cesarean section rates is often used as an indicator of quality of care in maternity hospitals. The assumption is that lower rates reflect in developed countries more appropriate clinical practice and general better performances. Hospitals are thus often ranked on the basis of caesarean section rates. The aim of this study is to assess whether the adjustment for clinical and sociodemographic variables of the mother and the fetus is necessary for inter-hospital comparisons of cesarean section (c-section) rates and to assess whether a risk adjustment model based on a limited number of variables could be identified and used. METHODS: Discharge abstracts of labouring women without prior cesarean were linked with abstracts of newborns discharged from 29 hospitals of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) from 2003 to 2004. Adjusted ORs of cesarean by hospital were estimated by using two logistic regression models: 1) a full model including the potential confounders selected by a backward procedure; 2) a parsimonious model including only actual confounders identified by the "change-in-estimate" procedure. Hospital rankings, based on ORs were examined. RESULTS: 24 risk factors for c-section were included in the full model and 7 (marital status, maternal age, infant weight, fetopelvic disproportion, eclampsia or pre-eclampsia, placenta previa/abruptio placentae, malposition/malpresentation) in the parsimonious model. Hospital ranking using the adjusted ORs from both models was different from that obtained using the crude ORs. The correlation between the rankings of the two models was 0.92. The crude ORs were smaller than ORs adjusted by both models, with the parsimonious ones producing more precise estimates. CONCLUSION: Risk adjustment is necessary to compare hospital c-section rates, it shows differences in rankings and highlights inappropriateness of some hospitals. By adjusting for only actual confounders valid and more precise estimates could be obtained

    Mapping interactions with the chaperone network reveals factors that protect against tau aggregation.

    A network of molecular chaperones is known to bind proteins ('clients') and balance their folding, function and turnover. However, it is often unclear which chaperones are critical for selective recognition of individual clients. It is also not clear why these key chaperones might fail in protein-aggregation diseases. Here, we utilized human microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT or tau) as a model client to survey interactions between ~30 purified chaperones and ~20 disease-associated tau variants (~600 combinations). From this large-scale analysis, we identified human DnaJA2 as an unexpected, but potent, inhibitor of tau aggregation. DnaJA2 levels were correlated with tau pathology in human brains, supporting the idea that it is an important regulator of tau homeostasis. Of note, we found that some disease-associated tau variants were relatively immune to interactions with chaperones, suggesting a model in which avoiding physical recognition by chaperone networks may contribute to disease
