    Fourier transform emission spectroscopy can make an important contribution in the observation of the Earth's atmosphere and in the investigation of atmospheric physics and chemistry. In this paper, we report the measurement performances and the result obtained by a Fourier transform spectrometer, named SAFIRE-A (Spectroscopy of the Atmosphere using Far Infrared Emission - Airborne), operating in the far infrared spectral region from limb sounding observation of the atmospheric emission from a high altitude aircraft. After a short review of the advantages of FTS emission limb sounding in comparison with competing techniques and observation geometries, a detailed description of the instrument is given with the result obtained during the APE-GAIA (Airborne Polar Experiment - Geophysica Aircraft In Antarctica) fi eld campaign carried out over the Antarctic Peninsula

    Fisheries and Marine Officers recreational fishing survey: 1998/99 – 2009/10

    Throughout Western Australia Fisheries and Marine Officers (FMOs) play a vital role in ensuring the sustainability of fish resources. Since July 1998, in the course of their other compliance activities, FMOs have collected information from recreational fishers on their catch and fishing trip. The primary objective of this report was to summarise the data collected by FMOs and ascertain the effectiveness of the convenience (i.e. unstructured) sampling technique for determining trends in recreational fishing patterns throughout Western Australia. Recreational fishing data was collected by FMOs during 6 629 land-based and boat-based patrols completed between 1998/99 – 2009/10, mostly within the West Coast bioregion

    A Multi-variate Discrimination Technique Based on Range-Searching

    We present a fast and transparent multi-variate event classification technique, called PDE-RS, which is based on sampling the signal and background densities in a multi-dimensional phase space using range-searching. The employed algorithm is presented in detail and its behaviour is studied with simple toy examples representing basic patterns of problems often encountered in High Energy Physics data analyses. In addition an example relevant for the search for instanton-induced processes in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA is discussed. For all studied examples, the new presented method performs as good as artificial Neural Networks and has furthermore the advantage to need less computation time. This allows to carefully select the best combination of observables which optimally separate the signal and background and for which the simulations describe the data best. Moreover, the systematic and statistical uncertainties can be easily evaluated. The method is therefore a powerful tool to find a small number of signal events in the large data samples expected at future particle colliders.Comment: Submitted to NIM, 18 pages, 8 figure

    Technical Note: Regularization performances with the error consistency method in the case of retrieved atmospheric profiles

    International audienceThe retrieval of concentration vertical profiles of atmospheric constituents from spectroscopic measurements is often an ill-conditioned problem and regularization methods are frequently used to improve its stability. Recently a new method, that provides a good compromise between precision and vertical resolution, was proposed to determine analytically the value of the regularization parameter. This method is applied for the first time to real measurements with its implementation in the operational retrieval code of the satellite limb-emission measurements of the MIPAS instrument and its performances are quantitatively analyzed. The adopted regularization improves the stability of the retrieval providing smooth profiles without major degradation of the vertical resolution. In the analyzed measurements the retrieval procedure provides a vertical resolution that, in the troposphere and low stratosphere, is smaller than the vertical field of view of the instrument

    Measurement of the water vapour vertical profile and of the Earth's outgoing far infrared flux

    International audienceOur understanding of global warming depends on the accuracy with which the atmospheric components that modulate the Earth's radiation budget are known. Many uncertainties still exist on the radiative effect of water in the different spectral regions, among which the far infrared where few observations have been made. An assessment is shown of the atmospheric outgoing flux obtained from a balloon-borne platform with wideband spectrally resolved nadir measurements at the top-of-atmosphere over the full spectral range, including the far infrared, from 100 to 1400 cm?1, made by a Fourier transform spectrometer with uncooled detectors. From these measurements, we retrieve 15 pieces of information about water vapour and temperature profiles, and surface temperature, with a precision of 5% for the mean water vapour profile and a major improvement of the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere knowledge. The retrieved atmospheric state makes it possible to calculate the emitted radiance as a function of the zenith angle and to determine the outgoing radiation flux, proving that spectrally resolved observations can be used to derive accurate information on the integrated flux. While the retrieved temperature is in good agreement with ECMWF analysis, the retrieved water vapour profile differs significantly, and, depending on time and location, the derived flux differs in the far infrared (0?600 cm?1) from that derived from ECMWF by 2?3.5 W/m2±0.4 W/m2. The observed discrepancy is larger than current estimates of radiative forcing due to CO2 increases since pre-industrial time. The error with which the flux is determined is caused mainly by calibration uncertainties while detector noise has a negligible effect, proving that uncooled detectors are adequate for top of the atmosphere radiometry

    Operational considerations for the PSB H- Injection System

    For the LINAC4 project the PS Booster (PSB) injection system will be upgraded. The 160 MeV Hbeam will be distributed to the 4 superimposed PSB synchrotron rings and horizontally injected by means of an H- charge-exchange system. Operational considerations for the injection system are presented, including expected beam losses from unwanted field stripping of H- and excited H0 and foil scattering, possible injection failure cases and expected stripping foil lifetimes. Loading assumptions for the internal beam dumps are discussed together with estimates of doses on various components
