    A bag of tricks: Using proper motions of Galactic stars to identify the Hercules ultra-faint dwarf galaxy members

    Hercules is the prototype of the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxies. To date, there are still no firm constraints on its total luminosity, due to the difficulty of disentangling Hercules bona-fide stars from the severe Galactic field contamination. In order to better constrain Hercules properties we aim at removing foreground and background contaminants in the galaxy field using the proper motions of the Milky Way stars and the colour-colour diagram. We have obtained images of Hercules in the rSloan, BBessel and Uspec bands with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and LBC-BIN mode capabilities. The rSloan new data-set combined with data from the LBT archive span a time baseline of about 5 yr, allowing us to measure for the first time proper motions of stars in the Hercules direction. The Uspec data along with existing LBT photometry allowed us to use colour-colour diagram to further remove the field contamination. Thanks to a highly-accurate procedure to derive the rSloan-filter geometric distortion solution for the LBC-red, we were able to measure stellar relative proper motions to a precision of better than 5 mas yr^-1 down to rSloan=22 mag and disentangle a significant fraction (\>90\%) of Milky Way contaminants. We ended up with a sample of 528 sources distributed over a large portion of the galaxy body (0.12 deg^2). Of these sources, 171 turned out to be background galaxies and additional foreground stars, from the analysis of the Uspec - BBessel vs. BBessel - rSloan colour-colour diagram. This leaves us with a sample of 357 likely members of the Hercules UFD. We compared the cleaned colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) with evolutionary models and synthetic CMDs, confirming the presence in Hercules of an old population (t=12\pm 2 Gyr), with a wide spread in metallicity (-3.3\<[Fe/H]\<-1.8).Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&

    A rare urinary JC virus reactivation after long-term therapy with rituximab

    Abstract The possible role of JC virus in determining urinary tract involvement has only recently been recognized. The case of a man with laboratory-confirmed JC virus replication in the urine after a maintenance schedule of rituximab administered for a lymphoproliferative disorder is reported herein. The patient developed severe renal and urinary tract impairment, characterized by the onset of nephropathy, bilateral ureteral strictures, and a serious reduction in vesical compliance, ultimately requiring an ileal neobladder configuration. The renal and urinary tract involvement was finally attributed to JC virus reactivation. This observation suggests that renal and urinary tract diseases related to JC virus might be associated with long-term rituximab treatment

    Templates of Lymph Node Dissection for Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review of the Literature

    Background: The role of lymph node dissection (LND) for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is controversial. Notably, the conflicting evidence on the benefits and harms of LND is inherently linked to the lack of consensus on both anatomic templates and extent of lymphadenectomy. Herein, we provide a detailed overview of the most commonly dissected templates of LND for RCC, focusing on key anatomic landmarks and patterns of lymphatic drainage.Methods: A systematic review of the English-language literature was performed without time filters in July 2018 in accordance to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement recommendations. The primary endpoint was to summarize the most commonly dissected templates of LND according to the side of RCC.Results: Overall, 25 studies were selected for qualitative analysis. Of these, most were retrospective. The LND template was heterogeneous across studies. Indications and extent of LND were either not reported or not standardized in most series. The most commonly dissected template for right-sided tumors included hilar, paracaval, and precaval nodes, with few authors extending the dissection to the inter-aortocaval, retrocaval, common iliac or pre/paraaortic nodes. Similarly, the most commonly dissected template for left-sided tumors encompassed the renal hilar, preaortic and paraaortic nodes, with few authors reporting a systematic dissection of inter-aortocaval, retro-aortic, common iliac, or para-caval nodes.Conclusions: In light of the unpredictable renal lymphatic anatomy and the evidence from available prospective mapping studies, the extent of the most commonly dissected templates might be insufficient to catch the overall anatomic pattern of lymphatic drainage from RCC

We conducted monitoring observations using multifilter optical and near-infrared photometry, as well as near-infrared spectroscopy, to understand the physical properties of Gaia19fct and investigate whether it fits into the historically defined two classes. We present the analyses of light curves, color variations, spectral lines, and CO modeling. The light curves show at least five brightening events since 2015, and the multifilter color evolutions are mostly gray. The gray evolution indicates that bursts are triggered by mechanisms other than extinction. Our near-infrared spectra exhibit both absorption and emission lines and show time variability throughout our observations. We found lower rotational velocity and lower temperature from the near-infrared atomic absorption lines than from the optical lines, suggesting that Gaia19fct has a Keplerian rotating disk. The CO overtone features show a superposition of absorption and emission components, which is unlike other young stellar objects. We modeled the CO lines, and the result suggests that the emission and absorption components are formed in different regions. We found that although Gaia19fct exhibits characteristics of both types of eruptive young stars, FU Orionis–type objects and EX Lupi–type objects, it shows more similarity with EXors in general.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Protocol of the Italian Radical Cystectomy Registry (RIC): a non-randomized, 24-month, multicenter study comparing robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and open surgery for radical cystectomy in bladder cancer

    Bladder cancer is the ninth most common type of cancer worldwide. In the past, radical cystectomy via open surgery has been considered the gold-standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer. However, in recent years there has been a progressive increase in the use of robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy. The aim of the current project is to investigate the surgical, oncological, and functional outcomes of patients with bladder cancer who undergo radical cystectomy comparing three different surgical techniques (robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and open surgery). Pre-, peri- and post-operative factors will be examined, and participants will be followed for a period of up to 24\u2009months to identify risks of mortality, oncological outcomes, hospital readmission, sexual performance, and continence
