    Contribution to the knowledge of continental ostracod from Chile

    Our knowledge of continental ostracods in South America is still in its infancy with a total of only 260 species (MARTENS & BEHEN, 1994). Particularly in Chile, it is still scarce and scattered, with large voids in the taxonomy and distribution. In Chile, the first records were reported by DADAY (1902), BREHM (1934) and LÖFFLER (1961a, b). Later, SCHWALB & BURNS (1999) cited species of Limnocytheridae and KARANOVIC (2012) provided new records of Candonidae from Chile.     Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Interpretacion paleoambiental de ensambles de moluscos del Cuaternario tardio del sur de America del Sur: una comparacion tafonomica entre el Estrecho de Magallanes y el Canal Beagle

    This study analyzes the Holocene molluscan assemblage in raised marine terraces along the coasts of the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel. A total of 33 gastropods and 12 bivalves were identified. They constitute the first mollusk listing for deposits in the Strait of Magellan. Taphonomic analysis suggests a high energy environment with epifaunal elements in the Strait of Magellan and a low energy environment with the predominance of infaunal elements in the Beagle Channel. All the collected species are living taxa suggesting that postglacial climatic variations were not enough to alter the composition of the communities since at least 6,000 yr BP in the southern Chile-Argentina región.Interpretación paleoambiental de ensambles de moluscos del Cuaternario tardío del sur de América del Sur: una comparación tafonómica entre el Estrecho de Magallanes y el Canal Beagle. Este trabajo analiza los ensambles de moluscos del Holoceno de las terrazas marinas presentes a lo largo de las costas del Estrecho de Magallanes y del Canal Beagle. Un total de 33 especies de gastrópodos y 12 de bivalvos fueron identificados. Ellos constituyen un primer listado de moluscos para los depósitos del Estrecho de Magallanes. El análisis tafonómico sugiere un ambiente de alta energía con elementos epifaunales en el Estrecho de Magallanes y un ambiente de baja energía con el predominio de elementos infaunales para el Canal Beagle. Todas las especies colectadas son taxa vivientes, lo que sugiere que las variaciones climáticas postglaciales no fueron suficientes para alterar la composición de las comunidades desde al menos 6.000 años AP en el extremo austral de Chile-Argentina.Fil: Cardenas, Javiera.     Shell variability in Tawera gayi (Veneridae) from southern SouthAmerica: A morphometric approach based on contour analysis

    This study analyses the significance of shell morphological variations in the venerid clam Tawera gayi, a typical element of shallow marine soft bottoms in southern South America and the most common species recovered from Late Quaternary marine deposits along the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego. Fossil and modern Tawera shells from different localities around the southern tip of South America were analysed using the Elliptic Fourier Analysis (EFA) method. Taking into account the palaeontological history of this genus in the southern hemisphere, EFA was also performed on shells of Tawera congeners from South Africa (T. philomela) and New Zealand (T. spissa). The use of EFA permitted the distinction between the three Tawera species and geographical differentiation in the T. gayi groups. These morphological variations of T. gayi appear best related to ecophenotypic plasticity as a response to different environmental conditions, although the palaeobiogeographical history of Tawera in South America cannot be ruled out.Fil: Gordillo, Sandra.
