A review of attendances at Paediatric Accident and Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital for neurological complaints patient
Aims: Attendances at paediatric accident and
emergency department (A&E) during a six month
period were reviewed to determine the proportion of
children with neurological complaints, type of
symptoms and the outcomes in terms of admissions,
discharges and out-patient referrals.
Methods: Neurological complaints were
classified as (a) febrile convulsions, (b) unprovoked
seizures, (c) status epilepticus, (d) headaches, (e)
altered consciousness, (f) acute ataxia, (g) flaccid
weakness, (h) visual loss, or (i) others. Outcomes of
these attendances were also recorded as either
admission, referrals to out-patient clinics or
discharges from A&E.
Results: A total of 7670 children attended
paediatric A&E during the study time of which 352
(4.5%) presented with neurological complaints. 173
children (49%) presented with headache, 54
(15.3%) presented with unprovoked seizures, 51
(14.4%) presented with febrile convulsions, 34
(9.6%) presented with altered consciousness and the
remaining 40 children (11.7%) presented with
various other complaints. 24.8% of children who
presented with headache were admitted, 34.1%
were referred to out-patient clinics and 41% were
discharged. In contrast, 75.5% of children you
presented with unprovoked seizures were admitted,
22.2% were referred to out-patient clinics and 3.7%
were discharged. There were no deaths.
Conclusion: 1 in 20 children who attended
paediatric A&E presented with neurological
complaints. One half of these children presented
with headache, around one third presented with
seizures (febrile and unprovoked), around 10%
presented with altered consciousness. Around a half
of these children were admitted, a quarter were
discharged home and the other quarter were referred
to out-patient clinics.peer-reviewe
A hipótese levantada a
partir de tal exame defende uma relação direta entre o nominalismo de Berkeley e o caráter
inaceitável, para o autor, da distinção entre o ser e o aparecer da matéria postulada pelas
teorias da representação.
Critique of abstration and representation in Berkeleys immaterialism
Abstract
The objective of this essay is to examine the relations that exist between
the critique of abstract ideas, presented by Berkeley in the Introduction to the
A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge and the arguments
developed in the first paragraphs of its Part I, in which Berkeley proposes his
immaterialism. The hypothesis advanced, based on our analysis, is that there is a
direct relation between Berkeleys nominalism and the unacceptable character,
according to Berkeley, of the distinction between the appearance and the matter
postulated by the theories of representation

Comparison of Two Entry Methods for Laparoscopic Port Entry: Technical Point of View
Laparoscopic entry is a blind procedure and it often represents a problem for all the related complications. In the last three decades, rapid advances in laparoscopic surgery have made it an invaluable part of general surgery, but there remains no clear consensus on an optimal method of entry into the peritoneal cavity. The aim of this paper is to focus on the evolution of two used methods of entry into the peritoneal cavity in laparoscopic surgery
Primary orthostatic tremor and orthostatic tremor-plus in dogs: 60 cases (2003-2020).
BACKGROUND: Orthostatic tremor (OT) is a rare movement disorder characterized by high-frequency (>12 Hz) involuntary, rhythmic, sinusoidal movements affecting predominantly the limbs while standing. OBJECTIVE: To describe the signalment, presenting complaints, phenotype, diagnostic findings, treatment, and outcome of a large sample of dogs with OT. ANIMALS: Sixty dogs diagnosed with OT based on conscious electromyography. METHODS: Multicenter retrospective case series study. Dogs were included if they had a conscious electromyography consistent with muscle discharge frequency >12 Hz while standing. RESULTS: Fifty-three cases were diagnosed with primary OT (POT). Giant breed dogs represented most cases (83%; 44/53). Most dogs (79%; 42/53) were younger than 2 years of age at onset of signs, except for Retrievers which were all older than 3.5 years of age. The most common presenting complaints were pelvic limb tremors while standing (85%; 45/53) and difficulty when rising or sitting down (45%; 24/53). Improvement of clinical signs occurred in most dogs (85%; 45/53) treated medically with phenobarbital, primidone, gabapentin, pregabalin or clonazepam, but it was mostly partial rather than complete. Orthostatic tremor-plus was seen in 7 dogs that had concurrent neurological diseases. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Primary OT is a progressive disease of young, purebred, giant/large-breed dogs, which appears to begin later in life in Retrievers. Primary OT apparently responds partially to medications. Orthostatic tremor-plus exists in dogs and can be concomitant or associated with other neurological diseases
Freedom in Bergson: Spontaneity, Creation and Self-engendering
The aim of the article is to show how the notions of spontaneity, creation and self- engendering such as they occur in the An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness and on Creative Evolution, paying attention to continuities and changes they go through from one work to the other
