    Spontaneous scalarization of self-gravitating magnetic fields

    In this paper, we study the spontaneous scalarization of an extended, self-gravitating system which is static, cylindrically symmetric and possesses electromagnetic fields. We demonstrate that a real massive scalar field condenses on this Melvin magnetic universe solution when introducing a nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and (a) the magnetic field and (b) the curvature of the space-time, respectively. We find that in both cases, the solutions exist on a finite interval of the coupling constant and that solutions with a number of nodes k in the scalar field are present.     Optically stimulated nanodosimeters with high storage capacity

    In this work we report on the thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) properties of beta-Na(Gd,Lu)F-4:Tb3+ nanophosphors prepared via a standard high-temperature coprecipitation route. Irradiating this phosphor with X-rays not only produces radioluminescence but also leads to a bright green afterglow that is detectable up to hours after excitation has stopped. The storage capacity of the phosphor was found to be (2.83 +/- 0.05) x 10(16) photons/gram, which is extraordinarily high for nano-sized particles and comparable to the benchmark bulk phosphor SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+. By combining TL with OSL, we show that the relatively shallow traps, which dominate the TL glow curves and are responsible for the bright afterglow, can also be emptied optically using 808 or 980 nm infrared light while the deeper traps can only be emptied thermally. This OSL at therapeutically relevant radiation doses is of high interest to the medical dosimetry community, and is demonstrated here in uniform, solution-processable nanocrystals

    On the construction of Dialectical Databases

    Argumentation systems have substantially evolved in the past few years, resulting in adequate tools to model some forms of common sense reasoning. This has sprung a new set of argument-based applications in diverse areas. In previous work, we defined how to use precompiled knowledge to obtain significant speed-ups in the inference process of an argument-based system. This development is based on a logic programming system with an argumentationdriven inference engine, called Observation Based Defeasible Logic Programming (ODeLP). In this setting was first presented the concept of dialectical databases, that is, data structures for storing precompiled knowledge. These structures provide precompiled information about inferences and can be used to speed up the inference process, as TMS do in general problem solvers. In this work, we present detailed algorithms for the creation of dialectical databases in ODeLP and analyze these algorithms in terms of their computational complexity

    Evaluation of elements distribution in printed circuit boards from mobile phones by micro x-ray fluorescence

    A micro X-ray fluorescence-based approach for the chemical characterization of spent printed circuit boards (PCBSPCBSS) from mobile phones was applied. More in detail, twelve spent mobile phones were grouped into three clusters according to brands, models and year of release, and a study to evaluate the technological evolution of PCBSs over time was carried out. Precious metals and hazardous elements were investigated, revealing a few differences between samples from the different groups. For instance, the distribution of gold on PCBS layers was more widespread for the older analyzed samples, and smaller quantities of bromine and lead were detected in the more recent models in accordance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC. Analysis of PCBS composition should contribute towards correctly managing such a complex waste, maximizing the recovery of base, critical and precious metals and considering the possible presence of harmful elements requiring careful management. The experimental results showed how, using the proposed approach, distribution maps for chemical elements present in PCBSs could be obtained, thus allowing the definition of optimal strategies for further handling (i.e. classification) and processing (i.e. critical/precious metal recovery)

    The main aim of this work was to assess the potential of in situ carbonation as a treatment to modify the properties of alkaline materials such as industrial soil in terms of leaching behaviour and mineralogy and to store the CO2 generated by specific treatments applied in the context of Brownfield regeneration. The process was investigated through lab-scale column carbonation experiments, in which 100% CO2 was fed through humidified stainless steel slag under ambient temperature and pressure for set reaction times. The reaction kinetics and the maximum CO2 uptake attained (5.5%), corresponding to a Ca conversion yield of 15.6%, after 4 h treatment proved slightly lower than those resulting from batch tests carried out on the same particle size fraction at enhanced operating conditions. The mineralogy of the material showed to be affected by column carbonation, exhibiting a higher calcite content and the decrease of Ca hydroxide and silicate phases. As a result of carbonation, the material showed a decrease in pH and Ca release as well as an increase in Si mobility. Furthermore, a reduction of Cr and Ba leaching, up to 63% and 96% respectively, was achieved after 2 h of reaction. However, carbonation was observed to lead to an increased leaching of V and Mo. The effects of carbonation on the leaching behaviour of the material were also investigated performing pH-dependence leaching tests and the results indicated that in situ carbonation appears to be a promising treatment to improve the properties of alkaline materials in view of their reuse on-site

    Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.VIII

    Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the seventh set of ten close binary systems: V410 Aur, V523 Cas, QW Gem, V921 Her, V2357 Oph, V1130 Tau, HN UMa, HX UMa, HD 93917, NSV 223. All systems, but three (V523 Cas, HD 93917, NSV 223), were discovered photometrically by the Hipparcos mission. All systems are double-lined (SB2) binaries and all, but the detached, very close system V1130 Tau, are contact binaries. The broadening-function permitted improvement of the orbital elements for V523 Cas, which was the only system observed before for radial velocity variations.     Transepithelial Corneal Cross-Linking With Vitamin E-Enhanced Riboflavin Solution and Abbreviated, Low-Dose UV-A: 24-Month Clinical Outcomes

    Purpose: To report the clinical outcomes with 24-month follow-up of transepithelial cross-linking using a combination of a D-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene-glycol 1000 succinate (vitamin E-TPGS)-enhanced riboflavin solution and abbreviated low fluence UV-A treatment. Methods: In a nonrandomized clinical trial, 25 corneas of 19 patients with topographically proven, progressive, mild to moderate keratoconus over the previous 6 months were cross-linked, and all patients were examined at 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The treatments were performed using a patented solution of riboflavin and vitamin E-TPGS, topically applied for 15 minutes, followed by two 5-minute UV-A treatments with separate doses both at fluence below 3 mW/cm2 that were based on preoperative central pachymetry. Results: During the 6-month pretreatment observation, the average Kmax increased by +1.99 +/- 0.29 D (diopter). Postoperatively, the average Kmax decreased, changing by -0.55 +/- 0.94 D, by -0.88 +/- 1.02 D and by -1.01 +/- 1.22 D at 6, 12, and 24 months. Postoperatively, Kmax decreased in 19, 20, and 20 of the 25 eyes at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months, respectively. Refractive cylinder was decreased by 3 months postoperatively and afterward, changing by -1.35 +/- 0.69 D at 24 months. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) improved at 6, 12, and 24 months, including an improvement of -0.19 +/- 0.13 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution units at 24 months. There was no reduction in endothelial cell count. No corneal abrasions occurred, and no bandage contact lenses or prescription analgesics were used during postoperative recovery. Conclusions: Transepithelial cross-linking using the riboflavin-vitamin E solution and brief, low-dose, pachymetry-dependent UV-A treatment safely stopped keratoconus progression

    Luminosity- and morphology-dependent clustering of galaxies

    How does the clustering of galaxies depend on their inner properties like morphological type and luminosity? We address this question in the mathematical framework of marked point processes and clarify the notion of luminosity and morphological segregation. A number of test quantities such as conditional mark-weighted two-point correlation functions are introduced. These descriptors allow for a scale-dependent analysis of luminosity and morphology segregation. Moreover, they break the degeneracy between an inhomogeneous fractal point set and actual present luminosity segregation. Using the Southern Sky Redshift Survey~2 (da Costa et al. 1998, SSRS2) we find both luminosity and morphological segregation at a high level of significance, confirming claims by previous works using these data (Benoist et al. 1996, Willmer et al. 1998). Specifically, the average luminosity and the fluctuations in the luminosity of pairs of galaxies are enhanced out to separations of 15Mpc/h. On scales smaller than 3Mpc/h the luminosities on galaxy pairs show a tight correlation. A comparison with the random-field model indicates that galaxy luminosities depend on the spatial distribution and galaxy-galaxy interactions. Early-type galaxies are also more strongly correlated, indicating morphological segregation. The galaxies in the PSCz catalog (Saunders et al. 2000) do not show significant luminosity segregation. This again illustrates that mainly early-type galaxies contribute to luminosity segregation.
