Thin GaAsSb capping layers for improved performance of InAs/GaAs quantum dot solar cells

The use of thin GaAsSb capping layers (CLs) is demonstrated to provide InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) solar cells (SCs) with improved efficiencies up to 20%. The application of such CLs allows the tunability of the QD ground state, switching the QD-CL band alignment to type II for high Sb contents and extending the photoresponse up to 1.5 ?m. Moreover, the CL provides a significant contribution to the photocurrent. An improved carrier collection efficiency is also found to be a main reason behind the increase of the short-circuit current density, unveiling a negative impact of the wetting layer (WL) on carrier transport in standard InAs/GaAs QD SCs. Calculations from an 8×8 k·p method suggest the attribution of such an improvement to longer carrier lifetimes in the WL-CL structure due to the transition to a type-II band alignment in Sb-containing structures. A faster open-circuit voltage recovery under light concentration is demonstrated for high Sb content type-II QD-CL structures, leading, in turn, to faster efficiency improvements with light power

Effect of capping rate on InAs/GaAs quantum dot solar cells

The unavoidable presence of the wetting layer (WL) in Stranski-Krastanov quantum dots (QD) has typically a negative impact on the performance of QD solar cells. In this work, a simple method to engineer the WL of InAs/GaAs QD solar cells is investigated. In particular, we show that covering the QDs at high GaAs capping rates reduces In-Ga intermixing and, therefore, In redistribution from the QDs to the WL. This results not only in larger QDs, but also in thinner WLs, with larger quantum confinement energies and reduced potential barriers for electrons and holes. Carrier trapping by the WLs and subsequent recombination is therefore reduced, resulting in larger photocurrent values of the QD solar cells under short circuit conditions

Strain-balanced type-II superlattices for efficient multi-junction solar cells

Multi-junction solar cells made by assembling semiconductor materials with different bandgap energies have hold the record conversion efficiencies for many years and are currently approaching 50%. Theoretical efficiency limits make use of optimum designs with the right lattice constant-bandgap energy combination, which requires a 1.0–1.15eV material lattice-matched to GaAs/Ge. Nevertheless, the lack of suitable semiconductor materials is hindering the achievement of the predicted efficiencies, since the only candidates were up to now complex quaternary and quinary alloys with inherent epitaxial growth problems that degrade carrier dynamics. Here we show how the use of strain-balanced GaAsSb/GaAsN superlattices might solve this problem. We demonstrate that the spatial separation of Sb and N atoms avoids the ubiquitous growth problems and improves crystal quality. Moreover, these new structures allow for additional control of the effective bandgap through the period thickness and provide a type-II band alignment with long carrier lifetimes. All this leads to a strong enhancement of the external quantum efficiency under photovoltaic conditions with respect to bulk layers of equivalent thickness. Our results show that GaAsSb/GaAsN superlattices with short periods are the ideal (pseudo) material to be integrated in new GaAs/Ge-based multi-junction solar cells that could approach the theoretical efficiency limit

CAPPRIC Study—Characterization of Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Spanish Adults Managed in Primary Care Settings

The real burden of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in non-hospitalized patients is largely unknown. This is a 3-year prospective, observational study of ambulatory CAP in adults, conducted in 24 Spanish primary care centers between 2016–2019. Sociodemographic and clinical variables of patients with radiographically confirmed CAP were collected. Pneumococcal etiology was assessed using the Binax Now® test. Patients were followed up for 10 ± 3 days. A total of 456 CAP patients were included in the study. Mean age was 56.6 (±17.5) years, 53.5% were female, and 53.9% had ≥1 comorbidity. Average incidence of CAP was 1.2–3.5 cases per 1000 persons per year. Eighteen patients (3.9%) were classified as pneumococcal CAP. Cough was present in 88.1% of patients at diagnosis and fever in 70.8%. Increased pulmonary density (63.3%) and alveolar infiltrates with air bronchogram (16.6%) were the most common radiographic findings. After 14.6 ± 6.0 days (95% CI = 13.9–15.3), 65.4% of patients had recovered. Hospitalization rate was 2.8%. The most frequently prescribed antibiotics were quinolones (58.7%) and β-lactams (31.1%). In conclusion, one-third of CAP patients did not fully recover after two weeks of empiric antibiotic therapy and 2.8% required hospitalization, highlighting the significant burden associated with non-hospitalized CAP in Spain
