    Effect of an Intensive Weight-Loss Lifestyle Intervention on Kidney Function: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Introduction: Large randomized trials testing the effect of a multifactorial weight-loss lifestyle intervention including Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) on renal function are lacking. Here, we evaluated the 1-year efficacy of an intensive weight-loss intervention with an energy-reduced MedDiet (erMedDiet) plus increased physical activity (PA) on renal function. Methods: Randomized controlled "PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea-Plus"(PREDIMED-Plus) trial is conducted in 23 Spanish centers comprising 208 primary care clinics. Overweight/obese (n = 6,719) adults aged 55-75 years with metabolic syndrome were randomly assigned (1:1) to an intensive weight-loss lifestyle intervention with an erMedDiet, PA promotion, and behavioral support (intervention) or usual-care advice to adhere to an energy-unrestricted MedDiet (control) between September 2013 and December 2016. The primary outcome was 1-year change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (EGFR). Secondary outcomes were changes in urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), incidence of moderately/severely impaired EGFR (<60 mL/min/1.73 m2) and micro-to macroalbuminuria (UACR ≥30 mg/g), and reversion of moderately (45 to <60 mL/min/1.73 m2) to mildly impaired GFR (60 to <90 mL/min/1.73 m2) or micro-to macroalbuminuria. Results: After 1 year, EGFR declined by 0.66 and 1.25 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the intervention and control groups, respectively (mean difference, 0.58 mL/min/1.73 m2; 95% CI: 0.15-1.02). There were no between-group differences in mean UACR or micro-to macroalbuminuria changes. Moderately/severely impaired EGFR incidence and reversion of moderately to mildly impaired GFR were 40% lower (HR 0.60; 0.44-0.82) and 92% higher (HR 1.92; 1.35-2.73), respectively, in the intervention group.     Dietary diversity and depression: cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses in Spanish adult population with metabolic syndrome. Findings from PREDIMED-Plus trial

    Objective: To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal (2-year follow-up) associations between dietary diversity (DD) and depressive symptoms. Design: An energy-adjusted dietary diversity score (DDS) was assessed using a validated FFQ and was categorised into quartiles (Q). The variety in each food group was classified into four categories of diversity (C). Depressive symptoms were assessed with Beck Depression Inventory-II (Beck II) questionnaire and depression cases defined as physician-diagnosed or Beck II >= 18. Linear and logistic regression models were used. Setting: Spanish older adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Participants: A total of 6625 adults aged 55–75 years from the PREDIMED-Plus study with overweight or obesity and MetS. Results: Total DDS was inversely and statistically significantly associated with depression in the cross-sectional analysis conducted; OR Q4 v. Q1 = 0·76 (95 % CI (0·64, 0·90)). This was driven by high diversity compared to low diversity (C3 v. C1) of vegetables (OR = 0·75, 95 % CI (0·57, 0·93)), cereals (OR = 0·72 (95 % CI (0·56, 0·94)) and proteins (OR = 0·27, 95 % CI (0·11, 0·62)). In the longitudinal analysis, there was no significant association between the baseline DDS and changes in depressive symptoms after 2 years of follow-up, except for DD in vegetables C4 v. C1 = (β = 0·70, 95 % CI (0·05, 1·35)). Conclusions: According to our results, DD is inversely associated with depressive symptoms, but eating more diverse does not seem to reduce the risk of future depression. Universidad de Zaragoza.Con el objetivo de conseguir el mínimo tamaño en las partículas de oro metálico,se selecciona una vía de incorporación sobre nanotubos de carbono de capa múltiple. El metodo elegido después de un proceso de optimización, constituye una de las rutas más simples y rápidas en comparación a las existentes actualmente en la literatura.Esta síntesis se realiza sin necesidad de previos pasos de funcionalización o tratamiento de la superficie de los nanotubos, de forma que mediante el empleo de una dispersión coloidal a la cual se añade el material carbonoso,junto con reductor y estabilizante,se consigue una incorporación de 0.5% del metal en su estado reducido en tan solo en 30 minutos a temperatura ambiente. El material así sintetizado presenta una distribución uniforme de partículos con un tamaño medio que oscila entre 3 y 10 nm.Mediante el empleo de este catalizador en reacciones de reducción de grupos nitro se observa una gran selectividad en alguno de los sustratos aún bajo el uso de condiciones suaves como son temperatura ambiente y presión atmosférica. Y se obtienen valores de TOF de hasta 1133 h-1, resultando competitivos con el resto de catalizadores de oro a día de hoy descritos.La caracterización del catalizador una vez ha transcurrido la reacción catalítica demuestra una elevada retención del metal en la mayoría de los casos. Además las partículas no sufren agregación, al contrario de lo que cabía esperar.Por otro lado, mediante el estudio de XPS se demuestra que una parte de la superficie de las partículoas está parcialmente oxidada resultando difícil confirmar cual es la fase catalíticamente activa, Au-0, Au + 1 o si ambas actúan como efectivos sitios activos.Peer reviewe

    Combination of two dispersants as a valuable strategy to prepare improved poly(vinyl alcohol)/carbon nanotube composites

    Supplementary data associated with this article can be found on pages 21-23.We here present an effective strategy to prepare enhanced composites using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). It contains two essential steps. First, the elaboration of homogeneous aqueous MWCNT dispersions and the selection of the most effective dispersing agent. In a sequential dispersion protocol for seven common dispersants, including surfactants and polymers, the dispersion quality and dispersion ability, independent of the intrinsic nature of the dispersing agent were established using zeta-potential and UV-Vis-spectroscopy. Second, the combination of the most effective dispersing agent, namely dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) with a polymer dispersant of high affinity towards the PVA matrix, namely polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). This resulted in homogeneous PVA-MWCNT composites with significantly improved glass transition temperature by up to 12 ºC as a function of the sequential order of dispersant addition.     One-step microwave synthesis of palladium-carbon nanotubes hybrids with improved catalytic performance

High loadings of Pd nanoparticles (up to 40 wt.%) having sizes between 3 and 5 nm are deposited on the surface of MWCNTs within a time of only 2 minutess.     Carbon nanotube-supported gold nanoparticles as efficient catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatic derivatives to anilines

    Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with sizes between 3 and 10 nm were firmly supported on pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in high yields by a facile linker-free deposition route using aqueous suspensions of pre-reduced gold precursors. For the first time, the resulting AuNP-MWCNT hybrid material was employed as catalyst for the hydrogenation of a series of substituted nitroarenes under mild reaction conditions. High catalytic activity with turnover frequencies (TOF) values up to 1200 h-1 were achieved accompanied by a remarkable chemoselectivity. Recyclability tests did neither reveal leaching nor changes in size or oxidation states of the AuNPs. The concomitant presence of Au0 and AuI accounts for both the superior catalytic performance and the high stability of the hybrid material.     High catalytic performance of palladium nanoparticles supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes in alkene hydrogenation reactions

    6 pages, 2 figures, 2 tablesThe synthesis of Pd nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and the catalytic performance of the resulting material (Pd-NPs/MWCNTs) on hydrogenation reactions are presented. Facile preparation approaches based on the decomposition of Pd precursors in the presence of MWCNTs lead to homogeneous dispersions of supported Pd-NPs with average size of 4 nm and Pd loads about 12%.
