    The UMLS::Association CUICollector module identifies UMLS Concept Unique Identifier bigrams and their frequencies in a biomedical text corpus. CUICollector was re-implemented in Hadoop MapReduce to improve algorithm speed, flexibility, and scalability. Evaluation of the Hadoop implementation compared to the serial module produced equivalent results and achieved a 28x speedup on a single-node Hadoop system

    El presente trabajo intenta describir la situación actual de las convocatorias de las entidades públicas analizando el contexto ético para evaluar y sugerir un sistema de pruebas que garantice transparencia en la elección de los funcionarios públicos. ¿Si no existen organismos neutrales que estén facultados para realizar las pruebas de escogencia para sus funcionarios estos deben ser independientes?, ¿Las capacitaciones evaluables a los aspirantes a cargos públicos son importantes?, ¿Tener políticos que sean responsables de infringir las normas establecidas para la contratación de empleados públicos siempre va significar para el estado un síndrome con impactos sociales altamente negativos?. Es así como los invito a conocer los procesos de convocatorias en el sector público, los beneficios que se consiguen al estar vinculados con el gobierno, la comparación de los procesos de selección de las empresas privadas con las del sector público, y como consecuencia de la Este trabajo pretende evidenciar las vicisitudes de las convocatorias de las entidades públicas, aproximarnos a las connotaciones éticas respecto a la transparencia de las mismas y esbozar parámetros del deber ser de dichos proceso

    Gran parte de la población de nuestro territorio, se encuentra asentada en zonas donde delinquen a diario los grupos armados ilegales, de los 32 departamentos que componen el territorio nacional, 31 de ellos se ven seriamente afectados por la siembra indiscriminada de Minas Antipersonal, Munición de Guerra sin Explotar y Artefactos Explosivos Improvisados. El sistema de gestión para Minas Antipersonal, Munición de Guerra sin Explotar y Artefactos Explosivos Improvisados (MAP, MSE, AEI), Bajo un Modelo de Seguridad Operacional, es la evolución del concepto de gestión y responsabilidad social empresarial, hacia una corresponsabilidad entre las entre las instituciones que prestan asistencia Médica, los operadores de Desminado Humanitario y las comunidades que están expuestas a este tipo de artefactos explosivos.     Los procesos de internacionalización de la economía generan fuertes influencias sobre el modelo de contabilidad, dado que el objetivo del sistema es producir una información contable que se ajuste a las necesidades de los usuarios bajo un modelo de desarrollo más dinámico. Por tanto, la evolución de la contabilidad, tanto pública como privada, se debe esencialmente a los cambios en los sistemas de producción, los cuales van generando, como es natural, nuevas necesidades de información. En tal sentido, se pretende realizar una evaluación de la contabilidad internacional y la necesidad de su implementaron en las entidades del sector publico colombiano.The processes of internationalization of the economy genérate strong influences over the accounting model, given that the system’s objective is to produce a countable information that gets adjusted to the users’ needs under a more dynamic development model. Therefore, the evolution of public as well as prívate accounting is essentially due to changes in the production systems, that, naturally, new needs of information keep on generating.     Design, Optimization, and Characterization of Novel Polymer-based Formulations for Controlled Release of Drugs

    Pharmaceutical products are a key aspect of treatment and prevention of disease. For example, dibenzazepine (DBZ) is a drug that has proved to be useful for the treatment of obesity while progesterone is a common drug for hormonal replacement therapy in women. However, administration of these drugs by conventional dosage forms offers little control over the drug distribution and concentration in the body and often result in unintended adverse consequences on other cells/tissues. Recent advances in nanotechnology and polymer science have enabled the design and development of controlled release systems that would allow spatiotemporal delivery of drugs with improved efficacy. In this work, DBZ-loaded polyester nanoparticles and progesterone-loaded cellulose composite films were synthesized and optimized as two novel systems for controlled drug delivery. Encapsulation of DBZ in polyester nanoparticles was accomplished using an optimized nanoprecipitation method. The DBZ-loaded nanoparticles were characterized with an average particle size of ~210 nm, low polydispersity index, and high encapsulation efficiency. In vitro release test demonstrated the ability of the nanoparticles to support the DBZ release in a controlled manner. Progesterone-loaded cellulose composite films were produced from ethyl cellulose/hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (EC/HPMC) using the solvent casting method. Release profiles of progesterone were tunable by simply changing the ratio of EC and HPMC

    Adapted K-Nearest Neighbors for Detecting Anomalies on Spatio–Temporal Traffic Flow

    Outlier detection is an extensive research area, which has been intensively studied in several domains such as biological sciences, medical diagnosis, surveillance, and traffic anomaly detection. This paper explores advances in the outlier detection area by finding anomalies in spatio-temporal urban traffic flow. It proposes a new approach by considering the distribution of the flows in a given time interval. The flow distribution probability (FDP) databases are first constructed from the traffic flows by considering both spatial and temporal information. The outlier detection mechanism is then applied to the coming flow distribution probabilities, the inliers are stored to enrich the FDP databases, while the outliers are excluded from the FDP databases. Moreover, a k-nearest neighbor for distance-based outlier detection is investigated and adopted for FDP outlier detection. To validate the proposed framework, real data from Odense traffic flow case are evaluated at ten locations. The results reveal that the proposed framework is able to detect the real distribution of flow outliers. Another experiment has been carried out on Beijing data, the results show that our approach outperforms the baseline algorithms for high-urban traffic flow

    In recent decades, power line communication has attracted considerable attention from the research community and industry, as well as from regulatory and standardization bodies. In this article we provide an overview of both narrowband and broadband systems, covering potential applications, regulatory and standardization efforts and recent research advancements in channel characterization, physical layer performance, medium access and higher layer specifications and evaluations.
