Multiple-mask chemical etching
Multiple masking techniques use lateral etching to reduce the total area of the high etch-rate oxide exposed to the chemical etchant. One method uses a short-term etch to remove the top layer from the silicon oxide surface, another acts before the top layer is grown
Bootstrapping in convergence groups
We prove a true bootstrapping result for convergence groups acting on a Peano
continuum. We give an example of a Kleinian group H which is the amalgamation
of two closed hyperbolic surface groups along a simple closed curve. The limit
set Lambda H is the closure of a `tree of circles' (adjacent circles meeting in
pairs of points). We alter the action of H on its limit set such that H no
longer acts as a convergence group, but the stabilizers of the circles remain
unchanged, as does the action of a circle stabilizer on said circle. This is
done by first separating the circles and then gluing them together backwards.Comment: Published by Algebraic and Geometric Topology at

Convergence groups from subgroups
We give sufficient conditions for a group of homeomorphisms of a Peano
continuum X without cut-points to be a convergence group. The condition is that
there is a collection of convergence subgroups whose limit sets `cut up' X in
the correct fashion. This is closely related to the result in [E Swenson, Axial
pairs and convergence groups on S^1, Topology 39 (2000) 229-237].Comment: Published by Geometry and Topology at

Crossing language barriers: using translation to bridge socioeconomic, cultural, and gender-based gaps
The purpose of this thesis is to show to process required to translate a previously untranslated work of literature from Spanish to English. After the introduction, it begins with a study of literary translation focusing on John Biguenet and Rainer Schulte’s The Craft of Translation, a compilation of essays by scholars in the field of translation. The thesis includes the English translation of two full chapters of Mexican author Elena Poniatowska’s novel Paseo de la Reforma. Prior to the two chapters is a section outlining specific examples of the research and decisions made during the translation process. The thesis includes an account of research conducted in Mexico City. Several sections are written in personal narrative style
An Analysis of Divorce in Nebraska
Each year the State of Nebraska compiles and publishes a considerable amount of data on marriage and divorce. An analysis of these data-such as a study of the extent, increase, and rate of divorce-offers a factual basis for determining how the family is faring in certain important aspects. Some indication of the probabilities of divorce may also be gained. The areas in a state where family breakdown is least and most pronounced may be located, and by comparing these areas, factors associated with high rates of divorce may be determined. The location of the areas may point out where research is most needed and where it is apt to be most productive. Opportunity is also provided to test theories and hypotheses concerning the relationship of certain factors to divorce
