¿Los tiempos están cambiando para la emigración Portuguesa?: Una comparación de los emigrantes salidos antes y después de la crisis económica
This paper aims to answer the question: To what extent do the Portuguese emigrants who left after the economic and financial crisis differ from those who left before this turning point? To fulfil this purpose, it is covered some literature on the impacts of this crisis on international migrations as well as some theories about the motivations that lead to emigration. The empirical component of this paper mobilizes data from a questionnaire survey applied to a sample of about 6,000 Portuguese residents in about 100 foreign countries. The field work took place between May 2014 and May 2015 and was applied in a multi-mode strategy, collecting surveys online and in paper-and-pen format. Several characteristics of the respondents are compared taking into account the year of departure from Portugal: before 2008 or after 2009. Furthermore, official statistics are also used to better corroborate the arguments.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Analytical characterization of ancient mortars from the archaeological roman site of Pisões (Beja, Portugal)
The analytical characterization of mortar samples from the roman archaeological site of Pisões, located in
Southern Portugal, were carried out by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetry (TGADTA),
optical and electron scanning microscopy (SEM-EDS), potentiometry and combustion analysis.
The Pisões archaeological complex includes a villa rustica, characterized by well-preserved mosaics and
thermal baths, as well as a mill and a mausoleum. Countryside villae epitomized the Romanization of the
Iberian Peninsula for over six centuries (2nd century BCE–4th century CE). Nevertheless, most of the
Roman villae identified in Portugal have not yet been systematically explored and studied.
This study provides valuable data on the construction materials and techniques used in Roman times in
the Iberian Peninsula. The careful selection of raw materials and the use of natural and artificial pozzolanic
materials can explain the favourable state of conservation, mechanical strength and long-term
durability of these mortars
Scientific evidence in the third sector: follow up Dianova Portugal
What is scientific evidence in the third sector for? This article aims to answer this central question based on a sustained argumentation in a follow-up study carried out at the therapeutic community Quinta das Lapas of the Dianova Association, in Portugal. The study of the integration trajectories of ex-dependents after the therapeutic process carried out at that community between 1999 and 2009, permitted the identification of some critical aspects in the process of social reinsertion. These are the aspects we discuss here, defending that from this analysis and discussion changes will result impacting the level of improvement of the services of treatment and reinsertion, and also the level of related public policies. Thus contributing to a more effective social reintegration of persons in a situation of vulnerability and consequently to the promotion of social cohesion
Sound production in the Meagre, Argyrosomus regius (Asso, 1801): intraspecific variability associated with size, sex and context
Many fish taxa produce sound in voluntary and in disturbance contexts but information on the full acoustic repertoire is lacking for most species. Yet, this knowledge is critical to enable monitoring fish populations in nature through acoustic monitoring.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology: PTDC/BIA-BMA/30517/2017; SFRH/BD/115562/2016; UID/MAR/04292/2019; UID/BIA/00329/2019; PTDC/BIA-BMA/29662/2017.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The retable of the chapel of Our Lady of Mercy in the cloister of Oporto’s Cathedral: study, conservation and restoration
The retable located in the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy, in the cloisters of Oporto’s cathedral, dates back to the 17th
century. Artistically, it belongs to a transition period between the Mannerism and the Baroque styles. The artistic value and the lack
of documented information about the artwork led to the development of a project contemplating its the study. Both chemical and
physical analyses - observation of the support, micro-FTIR and SEM-EDS - suggest that the retable was carved in sweet chestnut wood,
accordingly to the techniques used at the time. The retable presents water-gilded areas contrasting with blue and red phytomorphic
motifs. The polychromed areas were later covered with lead white paint. There were also evidences of previous conservation-restoration
interventions. The frail condition of the retable’s materials testified the need to conserve and restore it. Among other procedures, the
materials were consolidated and the lacunae were filled and inpainted - partially regenerating the artwork’s aesthetic unit
Stress, burnout and well-being in teaching profession: Portuguese studies
Professional satisfaction plays an important role in the way the human being develops his work. This is a complex and subjective concept since the same situation can be a source of satisfaction for one individual and the cause for dissatisfaction for another (Lammy, 2015). Professional satisfaction in teaching is associated with important variables such as self-esteem, physical and mental well-being, motivation, commitment, involvement, stress, absenteeism, success and professional achievement (Viveiros, 2011). When a teacher displays feelings of dissatisfaction and malaise, such feelings affect not only his fellow teachers but also the students. Such disinvestment and lack of motivation contribute directly to students' lack of interest in the classroom and, consequently, to a lower quality of the teaching and learning processes (Resende, 2003).
According to Silva (2012), professional satisfaction has direct effects on teachers’ motivation, which in turn always influences in some way the students’ academic success and compromises teachers’ willingness to their work, both individually and in teams. Professional satisfaction thus contributes to a pleasant school climate, facilitating planning and collaborative practices among teachers in order to achieve educational success
Exploring intersectional variations in sexual pleasure, sexual autonomy, and important correlates
Research suggests that pressure to meet gender norms can limit social behaviors and ultimately promote poor health outcomes, such as disparities in decreased sexual pleasure, which are considered a central component of human rights and well-being. Previous studies have shown that sexual pleasure and sexual autonomy are gender-related, but little is known about these indicators in diverse populations. This study used data from a probabilistic sample of Cape Verdean immigrant (n = 127) and Portuguese native (n = 133) women and men who were in an intimate relationship enrolled in the FEMINA (Fertility, Migration and Acculturation) project to explore intersectional variations in sexual pleasure, sexual satisfaction, and distress considering their interplay with sexual autonomy and social representations regarding sexuality. For all participants and especially among men, sex is a very important part of life. Sexual autonomy was positively associated with sexual pleasure among Cape Verdean and Portuguese women and Portuguese men. Sexual distress was negatively associated with sexual pleasure among women, especially Cape Verdean women who reported higher sexual distress. This small-scale study is an example of an intersectional approach to sexual health and rights.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Efeitos de variáveis cognitivas, emocionais e atitudinais no rendimento a matemática
Several predictive variables have been proposed to explain achievement on mathematics, allowing for the anticipation of complexity and the combination of multiple variables. Some studies indicate the multifactorial nature of mathematical performance, combining the cognitive and affective dimensions of the individual and the teaching and learning processes of mathematics. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of cognitive, emotional and attitudinal variables on math performance. The results highlight the need to look at mathematics achievement in the 4th year of school using a multivariate approach
Lemierre Syndrome in a Teenager Presenting as Pulmonary Septic Embolism
Lemierre syndrome is easily missed and may be more common than generally believed. Usually a complication
of a deep neck abscess, it can present suddenly with shortness of breath and hypoxemia. Accurate diagnosis
and orientation are mandatory for the treatment of an otherwise potentially life-threatening disease.
We describe a case of an adolescent with Lemierre syndrome and septic pulmonary embolism.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
