    SINGING PORTUGUESE NASAL VOWELS: PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING NASALITY IN BRAZILIAN ART SONGS

    The articulation of Portuguese nasalized vowels poses some articulatory problems accompanied by negative acoustic effects for the performance of Brazilian art songs. The main objective was to find strategies that permit the singer to conciliate an idiomatic pronunciation of these vowels with a well-balanced resonance, a desirable quality in classical singing. In order to devise these strategies, the author examined sources dealing with nasalized vowels from varied perspectives: acoustic properties of vowel nasalization, phonetic and phonological aspects ofBrazilian Portuguese (BP), historical views on nasality in singing, and recent vocal pedagogy research. In addition to the overall loss of sonority, the main effect of nasalization is felt mainly in the first formant (F1) region of oral vowels, due to the introduction of nasal formants and antiformants, and to shifts in the tongue posture. Several sources report the existence of a nasality contour in BP, by which a nasalized vowel starts with an oral phase and transitions gradually to a nasal phase. The author concludes that the basic approach to sing nasalized vowels in BP is (1) to find the tongue posture corresponding to the oral vowel congener (the “core vowel”), and (2) to adjust the nasality contour in such a way that the oral portion remains prominent in order to keep the resonance balance consistent during the emission of the vowel. Once the core vowel is determined, standard vowel modification choices can be made according to voice type and the musical context in which the vowel is being sung. Some challenging excerpts from Brazilian art songs are examined, with suggestions for the application of the discussed strategies

    Implantando um Escritório de Gerenciamento de Projetos Estratégico: um estudo de caso em uma instituição federal de ensino

    O presente estudo tem como objetivo geral compreender o processo de implantação de um EGP estratégico. A pesquisa se torna relevante, na medida em que se observa o crescimento em relação à adoção e implantação de EGPs estratégicos, encarregados de exercerem funções de apoio estratégico. Também percebe-se que muitas dessas estruturas estão sendo implantadas sob diferentes formatos, sendo, portanto, um objeto de estudo que precisa ser melhor investigado. O estudo adotou uma abordagem qualitativa, por meio de um estudo de caso em uma instituição pública de ensino, tendo como procedimentos técnicos de coleta uma narrativa, assim como documentos institucionais obtidos, e como procedimento de análise as técnicas de análise de conteúdo e codificação. Os resultados demonstram que há diferenças em relação ao processo de implantação do EGP estratégico, comparado o caso estudado com a literatura existente. Além disso, observou-se que o EGP estratégico foi implantado de forma gradativa e com processos contínuos de melhoria de suas práticas. Contudo, o estudo apresenta como implicações gerenciais a necessidade de se refletir sobre as funções desempenhadas pelo escritório, bem como a possibilidade de ampliar seu escopo de participação, utilizando uma estrutura descentralizada que permita uma maior organização e divisão de suas funções

    Atividade educativa para identificação correta do paciente: um relato de experiência

    Objetivo: descrever a experiência de acadêmicos de Enfermagem no desempenho da Atividade Educativa sobre a identificação correta do paciente. Metódos: trata-se de um relato de experiência no qual é descrito a atividade desenvolvida acerca da identificação correta do paciente. A ação foi direcionada aos acompanhantes dos pacientes e foi desenvolvida em quatro etapas distintas: escolha da temática; planejamento; execução e observação da realidade e; levantamento e discussão de problemas. Resultados: foi possível perceber o envolvimento e participação dos acompanhantes e pacientes na dinâmica proposta pelo grupo, sendo visto maior entendimento sobre a temática discutida. Conclusão: portanto, verificou-se a importância da identificação correta do paciente e a dupla checagem para manutenção de sua segurança e qualidade da assistência

    Novel ocellatin peptides mitigate LPS-induced ROS formation and NF-kB activation in microglia and hippocampal neurons

Therefore, this study aimed to determine the primary structure and investigate peptides obtained from the cutaneous secretions of the amphibian, Leptodactylus vastus, as a source of bioactive molecules. The peptides obtained possessed the amino acid sequences, GVVDILKGAAKDLAGH and GVVDILKGAAKDLAGHLASKV, with monoisotopic masses of [M + H]± = 1563.8 Da and [M + H]± = 2062.4 Da, respectively. The molecules were characterized as peptides of the class of ocellatins and were named as Ocellatin-K1(1-16) and Ocellatin-K1(1-21). Functional analysis revealed that Ocellatin-K1(1-16) and Ocellatin-K1(1-21) showed weak antibacterial activity. However, treatment of mice with these ocellatins reduced the nitrite and malondialdehyde content. Moreover, superoxide dismutase enzymatic activity and glutathione concentration were increased in the hippocampus of mice. In addition, Ocellatin-K1(1-16) and Ocellatin-K1(1-21) were effective in impairing lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and NF-kB activation in living microglia. We incubated hippocampal neurons with microglial conditioned media treated with LPS and LPS in the presence of Ocellatin-K1(1-16) and Ocellatin-K1(1-21) and observed that both peptides reduced the oxidative stress in hippocampal neurons. Furthermore, these ocellatins demonstrated low cytotoxicity towards erythrocytes.     Smartphone-based evaluation of static balance and mobility in long-lasting COVID-19 patients

    BackgroundSARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to a variety of persistent sequelae, collectively known as long COVID-19. Deficits in postural balance have been reported in patients several months after COVID-19 infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the static balance and balance of individuals with long COVID-19 using inertial sensors in smartphones.MethodsA total of 73 participants were included in this study, of which 41 had long COVID-19 and 32 served as controls. All participants in the long COVID-19 group reported physical complaints for at least 7 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Participants were evaluated using a built-in inertial sensor of a smartphone attached to the low back, which recorded inertial signals during a static balance and mobility task (timed up and go test). The parameters of static balance and mobility obtained from both groups were compared.ResultsThe groups were matched for age and BMI. Of the 41 participants in the long COVID-19 group, 22 reported balance impairment and 33 had impaired balance in the Sharpened Romberg test. Static balance assessment revealed that the long COVID-19 group had greater postural instability with both eyes open and closed than the control group. In the TUG test, the long COVID-19 group showed greater acceleration during the sit-to-stand transition compared to the control group.ConclusionThe smartphone was feasible to identify losses in the balance motor control and mobility of patients with long-lasting symptomatic COVID-19 even after several months or years. Attention to the balance impairment experienced by these patients could help prevent falls and improve their quality of life, and the use of the smartphone can expand this monitoring for a broader population
