    alpha - HgS Nanocrystals: Synthesis, Structure and Optical Properties

    Well-separated mercury sulfide (HgS) nanocrystals are synthesized by a wet chemical route. Transmission electron microscopy studies show that nanocrystals are nearly spherical in shape with average size of 9 nm. Grazing angle X-ray diffraction confirms that HgS nanocrystals are in cinnabar phase. Particle induced X-ray emission and Rutherford back scattering spectrometry analysis reveal HgS nanocrystals are stoichiometric and free from foreign impurities. The optical absorption measurements show two excitonic peaks corresponding to electron-heavy hole and electron-light hole transitions, which are blue shifted by 0.1 and 0.2 eV, respectively, from its bulk value, due to quantum size effect.     Solidification behavior of intensively sheared hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy liquid

    The official published version of this article can be found at the link below.The effect of the processing temperature on the microstructural and mechanical properties of Al-Si (hypoeutectic) alloy solidified from intensively sheared liquid metal has been investigated systematically. Intensive shearing gives a significant refinement in grain size and intermetallic particle size. It also is observed that the morphology of intermetallics, defect bands, and microscopic defects in high-pressure die cast components are affected by intensive shearing the liquid metal. We attempt to discuss the possible mechanism for these effects.Funded by the EPSRC

    Socioeconomic inequalities and the equity impact of population-level interventions for adolescent health: an overview of systematic reviews

    Objectives: Despite robust evidence on health inequalities in adulthood, less attention has been paid to inequalities in adolescence. The aim of this overview was to examine systematic review (SR) evidence on the equity impact of population-level interventions intended to improve health, happiness and wellbeing for adolescents. Study Design: An overview (review of systematic reviews). Methods: Eleven electronic databases were systematically searched to identify SRs of population-level interventions for adolescent health. A secondary data analysis of socioeconomic inequality was conducted to identify whether SRs reported on primary studies in terms of disadvantage, by measures of socioeconomic status (SES) and by differential effects. Results: 35,310 review titles were screened; 566 full texts were retrieved and 140 SRs met the predefined selection criteria. Differential intervention effects were considered in 42/140 (30%) SRs, 18/140 (13%) reported primary studies using an SES measure and 16/140 (11%) explicitly reported differential effects. 15/140 SRs (11%) explicitly focused on socioeconomic inequalities; of these 4/15 reported differential intervention effects in more detail, 7/15 concluded there was insufficient primary evidence to identify the impact of interventions on socioeconomic inequalities and 4/15 planned to examine differential effects by SES, but this was not reported further. Conclusions: Our overview identifies that there is limited SR evidence on the equity impact of population-level interventions for adolescent health. Strengthening the evidence on whether interventions narrow or widen inequalities for adolescents must be a priority for public health research

    Feeding and Distribution of Porosity in Cast Al-Si Alloys as Function of Alloy Composition and Modification

    Unmodified, Na-modified, and Sr-modified castings of Al-7 pct Si and Al-12.5 pct Si alloys were cast in molds in which it was possible to create different cooling conditions. It is shown how solidification influences the distribution of porosity at the surface and the center of the castings as a function of modification and Si content in sand- and chill-cast samples. Eutectic modification, Si content, and cooling conditions have a great impact on the distribution of porosity. Unmodified and Na-modified castings are more easily fed with porosity tending to congregate near the centerline of the casting, while Sr-modified castings solidify in a mushy manner that creates a more homogeneous distribution of porosity in the casting. The amount of porosity was highest in the Sr-modified alloys, lower in the Na-modified alloys, and lowest in the unmodified alloys. The size of the porosity-free layer and the effectiveness of the feeders were greater in the castings made with the steel chills due to the increased thermal gradients and consequent increase in the directionality of solidification

    Instabilities in the Flux Line Lattice of Anisotropic Superconductors

    The stability of the flux line lattice has been investigated within anisotropic London theory. This is the first full-scale investigation of instabilities in the `chain' state. It has been found that the lattice is stable at large fields, but that instabilities occur as the field is reduced. The field at which these instabilities first arise, b(ϵ,θ)b^*(\epsilon,\theta), depends on the anisotropy ϵ\epsilon and the angle θ\theta at which the lattice is tilted away from the cc-axis. These instabilities initially occur at wavevector k(ϵ,θ)k^*(\epsilon,\theta), and the component of kk^* along the average direction of the flux lines, kzk_z, is always finite. As the instability occurs at finite kzk_z the dependence of the cutoff on kzk_z is important, and we have used a cutoff suggested by Sudb\ospace and Brandt. The instabilities only occur for values of the anisotropy ϵ\epsilon appropriate to a material like BSCCO, and not for anisotropies more appropriate to YBCO. The lower critical field Hc1(ϕ)H_{c_1}(\phi) is calculated as a function of the angle ϕ\phi at which the applied field is tilted away from the crystal axis. The presence of kinks in Hc1(ϕ)H_{c_1}(\phi) is seen to be related to instabilities in the equilibrium flux line structure.Comment: Extensively revised paper, with modified analysis of elastic instabilities.     Model-independent extraction of Vtq|V_{tq}| matrix elements from top-quark measurements at hadron colliders

    Current methods to extract the quark-mixing matrix element Vtb|V_{tb}| from single-top production measurements assume that VtbVtd,Vts|V_{tb}|\gg |V_{td}|, |V_{ts}|: top quarks decay into bb quarks with 100% branching fraction, s-channel single-top production is always accompanied by a bb quark and initial-state contributions from dd and ss quarks in the tt-channel production of single top quarks are neglected. Triggered by a recent measurement of the ratio R=Vtb2Vtd2+Vts2+Vtb2=0.90±0.04R=\frac{|V_{tb}|^{2}}{|V_{td}|^{2}+|V_{ts}|^{2}+|V_{tb}|^{2}}=0.90 \pm 0.04 performed by the D0 collaboration, we consider a Vtb|V_{tb}| extraction method that takes into account non zero d- and s-quark contributions both in production and decay. We propose a strategy that allows to extract consistently and in a model-independent way the quark mixing matrix elements Vtd|V_{td}|, Vts|V_{ts}|, and Vtb|V_{tb}| from the measurement of RR and from single-top measured event yields. As an illustration, we apply our method to the Tevatron data using a CDF analysis of the measured single-top event yield with two jets in the final state one of which is identified as a bb-quark jet. We constrain the Vtq|V_{tq}| matrix elements within a four-generation scenario by combining the results with those obtained from direct measurements in flavor physics and determine the preferred range for the top-quark decay width within different scenarios.Comment: 36 pages, 17 figure

    Three heavy jet events at hadron colliders as a sensitive probe of the Higgs sector

    Assuming that a non-standard neutral Higgs with an enhanced Yukawa coupling to a bottom quark is observed at future hadron experiments, we propose a method for a better understanding of the Higgs sector. Our procedure is based on "counting" the number of events with heavy jets (where "heavy" stands for a c or b jet) versus b jets, in the final state of processes in which the Higgs is produced in association with a single high p_T c or b jet. We show that an observed signal of the type proposed, at either the Tevatron or the LHC, will rule out the popular two Higgs doublet model of type II as well as its supersymmetric version - the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), and may provide new evidence in favor of some more exotic multi Higgs scenarios. As an example, we show that in a version of a two Higgs doublet model which naturally accounts for the large mass of the top quark, our signal can be easily detected at the LHC within that framework. We also find that such a signal may be observable at the upgraded Tevatron RunIII, if the neutral Higgs in this model has a mass around 100 GeV and \tan\beta > 50 and if the efficiency for distinguishing a c jet from a light jet will reach the level of 50%.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages, 4 figures embedded in the text.     Dynamic scaling and aging phenomena in short-range Ising spin glass: Cu0.5_{0.5}Co0.5_{0.5}Cl2_{2}-FeCl3_{3} graphite bi-intercalation compound

    Static and dynamic behavior of short-range Ising-spin glass Cu0.5_{0.5}Co0.5_{0.5}Cl2_{2}-FeCl3_{3} graphite bi-intercalation compounds (GBIC) has been studied with SQUID DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. The TT dependence of the zero-field relaxation time τ\tau above a spin-freezing temperature TgT_{g} (= 3.92 ±\pm 0.11 K) is well described by critical slowing down. The absorption χ\chi^{\prime\prime} below TgT_{g} decreases with increasing angular frequency ω\omega, which is in contrast to the case of 3D Ising spin glass. The dynamic freezing temperature Tf(H,ω)T_{f}(H,\omega) at which dMFC(T,H)/M_{FC}(T,H)/dH=χ(T,H=0,ω)H=\chi^{\prime}(T,H=0,\omega), is determined as a function of frequency (0.01 Hz ω/2π\leq \omega/2\pi \leq 1 kHz) and magnetic field (0 H\leq H \leq 5 kOe). The dynamic scaling analysis of the relaxation time τ(T,H)\tau(T,H) defined as τ=1/ω\tau = 1/\omega at T=Tf(H,ω)T = T_{f}(H,\omega) suggests the absence of SG phase in the presence of HH (at least above 100 Oe). Dynamic scaling analysis of χ(T,ω)\chi^{\prime \prime}(T, \omega) and τ(T,H)\tau(T,H) near TgT_{g} leads to the critical exponents (β\beta = 0.36 ±\pm 0.03, γ\gamma = 3.5 ±\pm 0.4, ν\nu = 1.4 ±\pm 0.2, zz = 6.6 ±\pm 1.2, ψ\psi = 0.24 ±\pm 0.02, and θ\theta = 0.13 ±\pm 0.02). The aging phenomenon is studied through the absorption χ(ω,t)\chi^{\prime \prime}(\omega, t) below TgT_{g}. It obeys a (ωt)b(\omega t)^{-b^{\prime \prime}} power-law decay with an exponent b0.150.2b^{\prime \prime}\approx 0.15 - 0.2. The rejuvenation effect is also observed under sufficiently large (temperature and magnetic-field) perturbations.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev. B (September 1, 2003

    Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-Tc_c Systems

    A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-Tc_c type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe2_2 and several other low-Tc_c materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure

    New results from the NA57 experiment

    We report results from the experiment NA57 at CERN SPS on hyperon production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 AA GeV/cc and 40 AA GeV/cc. Λ\Lambda, Ξ\Xi and Ω\Omega yields are compared with those from the STAR experiment at the higher energy of the BNL RHIC.
