    On a Light Spinless Particle Coupled to Photons

    A pseudoscalar or scalar particle ϕ\phi that couples to two photons but not to leptons, quarks and nucleons would have effects in most of the experiments searching for axions, since these are based on the aγγa \gamma \gamma coupling. We examine the laboratory, astrophysical and cosmological constraints on ϕ\phi and study whether it may constitute a substantial part of the dark matter. We also generalize the ϕ\phi interactions to possess SU(2)×U(1)SU(2) \times U(1) gauge invariance, and analyze the phenomenological implications.Comment: LaTex, 20p., 6 figures.     Astrophysical Axion Bounds

    Axion emission by hot and dense plasmas is a new energy-loss channel for stars. Observational consequences include a modification of the solar sound-speed profile, an increase of the solar neutrino flux, a reduction of the helium-burning lifetime of globular-cluster stars, accelerated white-dwarf cooling, and a reduction of the supernova SN 1987A neutrino burst duration.     Functional MRI entropy measurements of age-related brain changes

    As we age there is a decline in cognitive abilities such as processing speed, memory, executive function and reasoning. The basis for this decline is not well understood. In this study, the physiological complexity of resting state fMRI signals in a group of healthy volunteers was investigated. Twenty volunteers ranging from age 25 to 60 years underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Physiological complexity was measured by calculating approximate entropy (ApEn) maps for all volunteers. Maps were statistically analysed globally and regionally with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM8) software respectively. Comparing the older participants (> 40 years) with the younger ones, the older group exhibited significantly lower signal ApEn in areas of white matter, grey matter, frontal lobe, sub-lobar, brainstem, limbic lobe and temporal lobe. Decline in fMRI brain complexity is a feature of normal ageing beyond the age of 40 years

Special attention is devoted to the recent results of the PVLAS collaboration, which are in conflict with the CAST data and with the astrophysical constraints. Solutions to the puzzle and the implications for new physics are discussed.     We compute the polarization of the final-state baryon, in its rest frame, in low-energy meson--baryon scattering with unpolarized initial state, in Unitarized BChPT. Free parameters are determined by fitting total and differential cross-section data (and spin-asymmetry or polarization data if available) for pKpK^-, pK+pK^+ and pπ+p\pi^+ scattering. We also compare our results with those of leading-order BChPT

    Pulsar-wind nebulae and magnetar outflows: observations at radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths

    We review observations of several classes of neutron-star-powered outflows: pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) inside shell supernova remnants (SNRs), PWNe interacting directly with interstellar medium (ISM), and magnetar-powered outflows. We describe radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of PWNe, focusing first on integrated spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) and global spectral properties. High-resolution X-ray imaging of PWNe shows a bewildering array of morphologies, with jets, trails, and other structures. Several of the 23 so far identified magnetars show evidence for continuous or sporadic emission of material, sometimes associated with giant flares, and a few possible "magnetar-wind nebulae" have been recently identified.Comment: 61 pages, 44 figures (reduced in quality for size reasons).     Investigation of the growth parameters of hydrothermal ZnO nanowires for scale up applications

    Zinc oxide nano-wires (ZnO NWs) are synthesized reproducibly with high yield via a low temperature hydrothermal technique. The influence of the growth duration time, growth temperature, zinc precursor and base concentration of Na2CO3 on the morphology of NWs is investigated. The growth products are characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL). SEM analysis shows that the optimum growth temperature is 140 °C and finds that length and diameter of ZnO NWs have a relationship with growth duration time and base concentrations of Na2CO3. In addition, it is reported that a high (∼ 90%) yield of ZnO NWs can be synthesised via using any of three different precursors: zinc chloride, zinc acetate and zinc nitrate. TEM and XRD results indicate the high purity and the single crystalline nature of the ZnO NWs. XPS confirms the absence of sodium contaminants on the surface and indicates a near flat band surface condition. PL shows a large visible band in the yellow part of the spectrum, and a small exciton emission peak, indicating a large defect concentration, which is reduced after annealing in air
