    Proponents of ground, which is used to indicate relations of ontological fundamentality, insist that ground is a unified phenomenon, but this thesis has recently been criticized. I will first review the proponents' claims for ground's unicity, as well as the criticisms that ground is too heterogeneous to do the philosophical work it is supposed to do. By drawing on Aristotle's notion of homonymy, I explore whether ground's metaphysical heterogeneity can be theoretically accommodated while at the same time preserving its proponents' desideratum that it be a unified phenomenon

    Parent and Friend Emotion Socialization as Correlates of Adolescent Eating Behavior

    Eating disorders and disordered eating affect about half a million teenagers in the United States. Restrained eating is a type of disordered eating behavior where individuals limit their food intake to avoid weight gain, maintain their current weight, or lose weight. Although researchers have examined numerous predictors of this eating style, there are gaps in the literature related to the role of emotion socialization on restrained eating. Parents and peers continually interact with adolescents; as such, both groups often witness adolescents’ emotion expressivity behaviors. They can respond supportively or unsupportively and these responses contribute to adolescents’ emotion regulation strategies. The current study examined parents’ and friends’ supportive and unsupportive emotion socialization behaviors as correlates of adolescents’ restrained eating directly and indirectly through emotion regulation strategies (i.e., inhibition, dysregulation, regulation cope). Since gender differences are typical in how emotions are socialized and in restrained eating behaviors, the role of gender was examined. Data were collected from 91 youth (Mage = 16.50 years; 56.0% female; 76.9% Caucasian) and their parents (Mage = 49.30 years; 91.2% mothers). Youth responded to the You and Your Friends Questionnaire which assessed best friends’ emotion socialization, the Children’s Emotion Management Scales, which assessed adolescents’ emotion regulation behaviors, and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, which assessed adolescents’ restrained eating. Parents completed the Emotions as a Child Questionnaire, which asked about parents’ emotion socialization. Conditional process analyses and parallel mediations were conducted to examine the direct and indirect effects of emotion socialization on restrained eating through emotion regulation and as a function of gender. Results indicated that emotion inhibition mediated the effects of friend supportive and passive unsupportive responses on restrained eating. Additionally, friend passive unsupportive responses predicted higher levels of restrained eating in girls and lower levels of restrained eating in boys. Lastly, parent and friend active unsupportive responses predicted restrained eating in girls, but in different directions. Parents’ active unsupportive responses predicted lower levels of restrained eating in girls, whereas friends’ active unsupportive response predicted higher levels of restrained eating in girls. These findings demonstrate that during adolescence individuals, especially friends, influence adolescents’ restrained eating behaviors. Further, girls may be at greater risk of restrained eating compared to adolescent boys

    Tribological challenges of scaling up tidal turbine blades

    Generating electricity from renewable resources (wind, wave and tidal) is of increasing interest. Of all marine renewables, tidal energy, by comparison, possesses the higher persistency and predictability over long time scales and the higher density of water than air results in greater power output from a tidal turbine than a wind turbine with similar dimensions. However, due to the nature of the tides, developing a reliable device for such environments, especially with an increased rotor diameter, raises more challenges to be addressed including the tribological challenges such as sediment erosion, cavitation erosion and their possible synergistic effects on the tidal turbine blades. This research focuses on testing and developing materials for improved tribological performance in tidal environments. This includes producing a variety of composite materials with different fibres and layouts reinforcement to evaluate two main tribological issues of composite materials in tidal environments: matrix cutting and reinforcement fracture using a loped test rig, which measures the effects of impact angle, particle size and concentrations at different tip speeds.     Tidal energy, of all marine renewables energies, possesses higher persistency and predictability over long time scales. Due to the aggressive marine environment, there are barriers in the development of tidal power generation technology. In particular, with regard to increased rotor diameter, the selection of material presents significant challenges to be addressed including the tribological environment, such as solid particle erosion, cavitation erosion, the effect of high thrust loading on the turbine blade tips, and the synergy between sea water conditions and such tribological phenomena. This research focuses on producing and testing a variety of advanced materials and surface coatings to investigate two main tribological issues in tidal environments: matrix cutting and reinforcement fracture. In our previous work, a G10 epoxy glass laminate was tested in this environment and the results revealed tribological issues. In this present work, G10 epoxy glass laminate base erosion resistant polymeric coatings have been tested for the range of sand particles size in our our previous work and in NaCl solution. The test results reveal that the coating has enhanced the quality of performance of the composite with respect to tribological behaviour, and has diminished the synergy between sea water and tribological phenomena. This indicates progress toward the selection of advanced materials to manufacture tidal turbine blades

    Patterns of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in insulin-treated diabetes: analysis of a Scottish population over time

    Analysis of a diabetes clinical information system in Tayside, Scotland, shows that a significant proportion of insulin-treated patients with diabetes are not self-monitoring blood glucose according to current clinical guidance and recommendations, with some not self-monitoring their blood glucose at all. Although there has been an increase in the numbers of reagent strips dispensed over the past decade, this increase is mainly accounted for by increased testing frequency among people with diabetes already testing.Output Type: Research Lette
