    Composition and luminescence of AlInGaN layers grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy

    A study of AlInGaN epilayers, grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy, was performed using spatially resolved x-ray microanalysis and luminescence spectroscopy in order to investigate competition between the incorporation of In, Al, and Ga as a function of the growth temperature in the 565-660 °C range and the nominal AlN mole fraction. The samples studied have AlN and InN mole fractions in the ranges of 4%-30% and 0%-16%, respectively. Composition measurements show the effect of decreasing temperature to be an increase in the incorporation of InN, accompanied by a small but discernible decrease in the ratio of GaN to AlN mole fractions. The incorporation of In is also shown to be significantly increased by decreasing the Al mole fraction. Optical emission peaks, observed by cathodoluminescence mapping and by photoluminescence, provide further information on the epilayer compositions as a function of substrate temperature, and the dependencies of peak energy and linewidth are plotted

    Raman-scattering study of the InGaN alloy over the whole composition range

    We present Raman-scattering measurements on InxGa1−xN over the entire composition range of the alloy. The frequencies of the A1(LO) and E2 modes are reported and show a good agreement with the one-mode behavior dispersion predicted by the modified random-element isodisplacement model. The A1(LO) mode displays a high intensity relative to the E2 mode due to resonant enhancement. For above band-gap excitation, the A1(LO) peak displays frequency shifts as a function of the excitation energy due to selective excitation of regions with different In contents, and strong multiphonon scattering up to 3LO is observed in outgoing resonance conditions

    Regional differences in childhood BMI data : the Malta childhood national body mass index study

    Introduction: Obesity is a problem of major public health concern all over the world and Malta has high obesity prevalence rates. With over a third of Maltese children being overweight or obese, the Malta Childhood National Body Mass Index study was devised to quantify the extent of the problem precisely. This paper looks at regional differences in the BMI data obtained. Methods: Training in measurement was provided to physical education teachers and identical stadiometers were used. Data was processed using World Health Organisation cut-offs for underweight, overweight and obesity. Results: A total of 41,343 students from 145 schools were measured. Age range from 4.7 to 17 years. Approximately 40% of school-aged children in Malta were overweight or obese, with higher percentages of obesity than overweight being observed. Results show significant differences in BMI between children living in Northern and Southern regions of Malta. Conclusion: Results from this study further confirm the high levels of overweight and obesity in Maltese children. The North-South differences should help better target public health resources and should be further evaluated in more focussed research.peer-reviewe

    Use of 3D Printing in Model Manufacturing for Minor Surgery Training of General Practitioners in Primary Care

    In order to increase the efficiency of the Spanish health system, minor surgery programs are currently carried out in primary care centers. This organizational change has led to the need to train many general practitioners (GPs) in this discipline on a practical level. Due to the cost of the existing minor surgery training models in the market, pig’s feet or chicken thighs are used to practice the removal of figured lesions and the suture of wounds. In the present work, the use of 3D printing is proposed, to manufacture models that reproduce in a realistic way the most common lesions in minor surgery practice, and that allow doctors to be trained in an adequate way. Four models with the most common dermal lesions have been designed and manufactured, and then evaluated by a panel of experts. Face validity was demonstrated with four items on a five-point Likert scale that was completed anonymously. The models have obtained the following results: aesthetic recreation, 4.6 ± 0.5; realism during anesthesia infiltration, 4.8 ± 0.4; realism during lesion removal, 2.8 ± 0.4; realism during surgical wound closure, 1.2 ± 0.4. The score in this last section could be improved if a more elastic skin-colored filament were found on the market
