3 d(2) configuration in six-times-ionized argon, ArVII
The transition array 2p(6)3p3d-2p(6)3d(2) has been identified in the spectrum of magnesium-like Ar vii produced by electrical discharges in the vacuum-ultraviolet region. Twenty-five new transitions have been identified as combinations of levels of this transition array. From these transitions we have determined the levels of the 3d(2) configuration. It was also possible to determine the 2p(6)3p3d(1)D(2)(o) level that was missed in the early research with the Ar vii spectrum. Hartree-Fock calculations with relativistic corrections were used to predict energy levels and transitions. Isoelectronic comparisons along the Mg I sequence are used to support the experimental results. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.18111718172
A Close Nuclear Black Hole Pair in the Spiral Galaxy NGC 3393
The current picture of galaxy evolution advocates co-evolution of galaxies
and their nuclear massive black holes (MBHs), through accretion and merging.
Quasar pairs (6,000-300,000 light-years separation) exemplify the first stages
of this gravitational interaction. The final stages, through binary MBHs and
final collapse with gravitational wave emission, are consistent with the
sub-light-year separation MBHs inferred from optical spectra and
light-variability of two quasars. The double active nuclei of few nearby
galaxies with disrupted morphology and intense star formation (e.g., NGC 6240
and Mkn 463; ~2,400 and ~12,000 light-years separation respectively)
demonstrate the importance of major mergers of equal mass spirals in this
evolution, leading to an elliptical galaxy, as in the case of the double radio
nucleus (~15 light-years separation) elliptical 0402+379. Minor mergers of
galaxies with a smaller companion should be a more common occurrence, evolving
into spiral galaxies with active MBH pairs, but have hitherto not been seen.
Here we report the presence of two active MBHs, separated by ~430 light-years,
in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3393. The regular spiral morphology and predominantly
old circum-nuclear stellar population of this galaxy, and the closeness of the
MBHs embedded in the bulge, suggest the result of minor merger evolution.Comment: Preprint (not final) version of a paper to appear in Natur

Factors associated with smoking in pregnancy
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify factors related to smoking during pregnancy. The sample included 267 puerperae hospitalized in the maternity unit of a university hospital in Porto Alegre/RS. The data were collected through a self-applied instrument and statistically analyzed. The majority of the puerperae (51.3%) were between 18 and 25 years old, 55.4% were nonsmokers, 25.5% were smokers, 19.1% had recently ceased smoking (in abstinence). The nonsmokers had more consultations than the smokers and the abstinent smokers (p=0.025). The number of women who had more than one child was higher among smokers than among nonsmokers and abstinent smokers (p=0.002). Women were more likely to stop smoking before pregnancy when they had a partner who was a nonsmoker (p=0.007). Several factors influence smoking and smoking cessation and these are important in prenatal interventions aimed at pregnant women and their partners
Anchoring of proteins to lactic acid bacteria
The anchoring of proteins to the cell surface of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) using genetic techniques is an exciting and emerging research area that holds great promise for a wide variety of biotechnological applications. This paper reviews five different types of anchoring domains that have been explored for their efficiency in attaching hybrid proteins to the cell membrane or cell wall of LAB. The most exploited anchoring regions are those with the LPXTG box that bind the proteins in a covalent way to the cell wall. In recent years, two new modes of cell wall protein anchoring have been studied and these may provide new approaches in surface display. The important progress that is being made with cell surface display of chimaeric proteins in the areas of vaccine development and enzyme- or whole-cell immobilisation is highlighted.
Transcription Profiling of Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen (EBNA)-1 Expressing Cells Suggests Targeting of Chromatin Remodeling Complexes
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded nuclear antigen (EBNA)-1 regulates virus replication and transcription, and participates in the remodeling of the cellular environment that accompanies EBV induced B-cell immortalization and malignant transformation. The putative cellular targets of these effects of EBNA-1 are largely unknown. To address this issue we have profiled the transcriptional changes induced by short- and long-term expression of EBNA-1 in the EBV negative B-cell lymphoma BJAB. Three hundred and nineteen cellular genes were regulated in a conditional transfectant shortly after EBNA-1 induction while a ten fold higher number of genes was regulated upon continuous EBNA-1 expression. Promoter analysis of the differentially regulated genes demonstrated a significant enrichment of putative EBNA-1 binding sites suggesting that EBNA-1 may directly influence the transcription of a subset of genes. Gene ontology analysis of forty seven genes that were consistently regulated independently on the time of EBNA-1 expression revealed an unexpected enrichment of genes involved in the maintenance of chromatin architecture. The interaction network of the affected gene products suggests that EBNA-1 may promote a broad rearrangement of the cellular transcription landscape by altering the expression of key components of chromatin remodeling complexes
Aqueous-Phase Synthesis of Silver Nanodiscs and Nanorods in Methyl Cellulose Matrix: Photophysical Study and Simulation of UV–Vis Extinction Spectra Using DDA Method
We present a very simple and effective way for the synthesis of tunable coloured silver sols having different morphologies. The procedure is based on the seed-mediated growth approach where methyl cellulose (MC) has been used as soft-template in the growth solution. Nanostructures of varying morphologies as well as colour of the silver sols are controlled by altering the concentration of citrate in the growth solution. Similar to the polymers in the solution, citrate ions also dynamically adsorbed on the growing silver nanoparticles and promote one (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) growth of nanoparticles. Silver nanostructures are characterized using UV–vis and HR-TEM spectroscopic study. Simulation of the UV–vis extinction spectra of our synthesized silver nanostructures has been carried out using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method
The worldwide NORM production and a fully automated gamma-ray spectrometer for their characterization
Materials containing radionuclides of natural origin, which is modified by
human made processes and being subject to regulation because of their
radioactivity are known as NORM. We present a brief review of the main
categories of non-nuclear industries together with the levels of activity
concentration in feed raw materials, products and waste, including mechanisms
of radioisotope enrichments. The global management of NORM shows a high level
of complexity, mainly due to different degrees of radioactivity enhancement and
the huge amount of worldwide waste production. The future tendency of
guidelines concerning environmental protection will require both a systematic
monitoring based on the ever-increasing sampling and high performance of gamma
ray spectroscopy. On the ground of these requirements a new low background
fully automated high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer MCA_Rad has been
developed. The design of Pb and Cu shielding allowed to reach a background
reduction of two order of magnitude with respect to laboratory radioactivity. A
severe lowering of manpower cost is obtained through a fully automation system,
which enables up to 24 samples to be measured without any human attendance. Two
coupled HPGe detectors increase the detection efficiency, performing accurate
measurements on sample volume (180 cc) with a reduction of sample transport
cost of material. Details of the instrument calibration method are presented.
MCA_Rad system can measure in less than one hour a typical NORM sample enriched
in U and Th with some hundreds of Bq/kg, with an overall uncertainty less than
5%. Quality control of this method has been tested. Measurements of certified
reference materials RGK-1, RGU-2 and RGTh-1 containing concentrations of K, U
and Th comparable to NORM have been performed, resulting an overall relative
discrepancy of 5% among central values within the reported uncertainty.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 6 table
Caenorhabditis elegans Cyclin B3 Is Required for Multiple Mitotic Processes Including Alleviation of a Spindle Checkpoint–Dependent Block in Anaphase Chromosome Segregation
The master regulators of the cell cycle are cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks), which influence the function of a myriad of proteins via phosphorylation. Mitotic Cdk1 is activated by A-type, as well as B1- and B2-type, cyclins. However, the role of a third, conserved cyclin B family member, cyclin B3, is less well defined. Here, we show that Caenorhabditis elegans CYB-3 has essential and distinct functions from cyclin B1 and B2 in the early embryo. CYB-3 is required for the timely execution of a number of cell cycle events including completion of the MII meiotic division of the oocyte nucleus, pronuclear migration, centrosome maturation, mitotic chromosome condensation and congression, and, most strikingly, progression through the metaphase-to-anaphase transition. Our experiments reveal that the extended metaphase delay in CYB-3–depleted embryos is dependent on an intact spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) and results in salient defects in the architecture of holocentric metaphase chromosomes. Furthermore, genetically increasing or decreasing dynein activity results in the respective suppression or enhancement of CYB-3–dependent defects in cell cycle progression. Altogether, these data reveal that CYB-3 plays a unique, essential role in the cell cycle including promoting mitotic dynein functionality and alleviation of a SAC–dependent block in anaphase chromosome segregation
