Calcium and magnesium absorption and retention by growing goats offered diets with different calcium sources
Calcium addition is necessary in order to balance the high phosphorus concentrations that are characteristic of high-concentrate ruminant diets. However, calcium sources differ in their bioavailability. Our objective was to determine apparent calcium and magnesium absorption and retention in goats offered diets containing different sources of calcium. Spanish-Boer goats (n = 18; 19.6 ± 1.88 kg) were stratified by body weight (BW) and sex and randomized to dietary treatments consisting of Purina Antlermax 16 containing either calcium carbonate (CC), Calmin (CM) or Milk Cal (MC). Goats were adapted to a control, corn-based high-concentrate diet on pasture and then moved to individual 1.0 à 1.5-m pens with plastic coated expanded metal floors, and adjusted to their respective diets along with removal of hay from the diet over a 7-d period. Goats were then offered their respective diets at a total of 2% of BW in equal feedings at 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM for an additional 14-d adaption period to diet and facilities followed by a 7-d collection of total urine and feces. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS. Calcium and magnesium intake were not different (P ℠0.12) among diets. Calcium and magnesium apparent absorption and retention (g/d and % of intake) were greatest (P \u3c 0.05) in goats offered CC and did not differ (P ℠0.20) between goats offered the CM and MC diets. Therefore, calcium and magnesium were more available for goats from the diet containing calcium carbonate compared with diets containing Calmin and Milk Cal
Excitons and high-order optical transitions in individual carbon nanotubes
We examine the excitonic nature of high-lying optical transitions in
single-walled carbon nanotubes by means of Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy. A
careful analysis of the principal transitions of individual semiconducting and
metallic nanotubes reveals that in both cases the lineshape is consistent with
an excitonic model, but not one of free-carriers. For semiconducting species,
side-bands are observed at ~200 meV above the third and fourth optical
transitions. These features are ascribed to exciton-phonon bound states. Such
side-bands are not apparent for metallic nanotubes,as expected from the reduced
strength of excitonic interactions in these systems
Starbursts versus Truncated Star Formation in Nearby Clusters of Galaxies
We present long-slit spectroscopy, B and R bandpass imaging, and 21 cm
observations of a sample of early-type galaxies in nearby clusters which are
known to be either in a star-forming phase or to have had star formation which
recently terminated. From the long-slit spectra, obtained with the Blanco 4-m
telescope, we find that emission lines in the star-forming cluster galaxies are
significantly more centrally concentrated than in a sample of field galaxies.
The broadband imaging reveals that two currently star-forming early-type
galaxies in the Pegasus I cluster have blue nuclei, again indicating that
recent star formation has been concentrated. In contrast, the two galaxies for
which star formation has already ended show no central color gradient. The
Pegasus I galaxy with the most evident signs of ongoing star formation
(NGC7648), exhibits signatures of a tidal encounter. Neutral hydrogen
observations of that galaxy with the Arecibo radiotelescope reveal the presence
of ~4 x 10^8 solar masses of HI. Arecibo observations of other current or
recent star-forming early-type galaxies in Pegasus I indicate smaller amounts
of gas in one of them, and only upper limits in others.Comment: to be published in Astronomical Journa
Radial Color Gradients in K+A Galaxies in Distant Clusters of Galaxies
Galaxies in rich clusters with z 0.3 are observed to have a higher
fraction of photometrically blue galaxies than their nearby counterparts. This
raises the important question of what environmental effects can cause the
termination of star formation between z 0.3 and the present. The star
formation may be truncated due to ram-pressure stripping, or the gas in the
disk may be depleted by an episode of star formation caused by some external
perturbation. To help resolve this issue, surface photometry was carried out
for a total of 70 early-type galaxies in the cluster Cl1358+62, at z
0.33, using two-color images from the Hubble Archive. The galaxies were divided
into two categories based on spectroscopic criteria: 24 are type K+A (e.g.,
strong Balmer lines, with no visible emission lines), while the remaining 46
are in the control sample with normal spectra. Radial color profiles were
produced to see if the K+A galaxies show bluer nuclei in relation to their
surrounding disks. Specifically, a linear gradient was fit to the radial color
profile of each galaxy. We find that the K+A galaxies on average tend to have
slightly bluer gradients towards the center than the normals. A
Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test has been applied to the two sets of color
gradients. The result of the test indicates that there is only a 2%
probability that the K+A and normal samples are drawn from the same parent
distribution. There is a possible complication from a trend in the apparent
magnitude vs. color gradient relation, but overall our results favor the
centralized star formation scenario as an important process in the evolution of

Mivacurium Sensitivity at the Adductor Pollicis and Hand Grip Muscles: Differences Between Males and Females
Background: Males lose more handgrip strength (HGS) than females when adductor pollicis (AP) TOF ratio decreases. The reason is unclear.
Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to explore gender-related differences in neuromuscular sensitivity to mivacurium. As a secondary aim, clearance of mivacurium was determined.
Methods: In 10 healthy males and 10 healthy females, constant-rate infusions of mivacurium were administered to obtain three different levels of stable neuromuscular block (normalized acceleromyography AP TOF ratio 80, 60, and 40%) in each study subject. Arterial blood samples were collected to determine mivacurium plasma concentrations. The HGS was measured every five minutes. A Hill equation was fitted to data on mivacurium concentration versus normalized AP TOF ratio and HGS to determine drug concentrations associated with 50% maximum effect (C50 AP TOF ratio and C50 HGS). Differences within and between genders were tested with the parametric t-test. Clearance of mivacurium was calculated at each block level as the ratio between drug infusion rate and concentration. Gender-related differences in relationships between AP TOF ratio and HGS, mivacurium infusion rates, and mivacurium plasma concentrations were determined with linear mixed-models.
Results: The C50 AP TOF ratio was significantly greater than C50HGSin males, yet not in females. Mivacurium infusion rates, needed to maintain stable neuromuscular blocks, were significantly greater in males, while clearance was similar between genders. Males lost significantly more HGS with decreasing AP TOF ratio than females, both in absolute (kg) and relative (percentage of baseline) terms.
Conclusions: In males, yet not in females, the AP was significantly less sensitive to the effect of mivacurium than the muscles involved in the handgrip function. Thisfindingexplainswhyhandgripstrength decreasesmorein males than females with decreasing AP TOF ratio during the mivacurium block
Use of Extinguish Plusâą to Reduce Red Imported Fire Ants and Increase Northern Bobwhite Abundance
Populations of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) have been declining throughout Texas since at least the 1970s. The red imported fire ant (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta) was introduced from South America and reached Texas by the 1950s. Previous studies have documented the negative effects of RIFA on northern bobwhite populations through both direct predation and indirect reduction of small invertebrates. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, large areas (1,490 ha in 2013 and 2,380 ha in 2014 and 2015) of the 3,744-ha portion of the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge (APCNWR) in Colorado County, Texas, were aerially treated with Extinguish Plusâą, a chemical pesticide and reproductive inhibitor that targets ants. Our study took place on APCNWR and our objectives included evaluation of the impacts of RIFA treatment on 1) RIFA abundance, and 2) northern bobwhite nest success and brood survival. We trapped, banded, and radiocollared northern bobwhites in areas treated and not treated with Extinguish Plus from May 2014 through August 2016. We also collected RIFA abundance data using baited Petri dishes on areas treated and nontreated areas during these periods. Treatment reduced RIFA presence on the refuge by 73.4% during 2014 and 2015, but did not reduce RIFA presence during 2016 possibly because of displacement of RIFA colonies due to heavy flooding on the refuge. We detected a difference (Ï21 = 11,009, P = 0.0009) in the number of females sighted with and without broods between treated (19.5% F with broods) and nontreated areas (35.7% F with broods). We also found a difference (t12 = 2.51, P = 0.027) in mean number of chicks per brood sighted within treated (4.7) versus nontreated (9.3) areas for 2014 and 2014; but in 2016, we found no difference (t12 = 0.32, P = 0.754) in mean number of chicks per brood sighted within treated (7.7) and nontreated (8.4) areas, which was possibly due to extensive flooding in the nontreated area in April that destroyed most first nests. Our data suggested treatment with Extinguish Plus did not increase northern bobwhite abundance on the APCNWR during the 2014, 2015, and 2016 bobwhite nesting seasons. Our results differ from previous studies, possibly because of time since treatment and differences in environmental factors between treated and nontreated areas such as ecological site, vegetation composition, and predator abundance
A Comprehensive Archival Search for Counterparts to Ultra-Compact High Velocity Clouds: Five Local Volume Dwarf Galaxies
We report five Local Volume dwarf galaxies (two of which are presented here
for the first time) uncovered during a comprehensive archival search for
optical counterparts to ultra-compact high velocity clouds (UCHVCs). The UCHVC
population of HI clouds are thought to be candidate gas-rich, low mass halos at
the edge of the Local Group and beyond, but no comprehensive search for stellar
counterparts to these systems has been presented. Careful visual inspection of
all publicly available optical and ultraviolet imaging at the position of the
UCHVCs revealed six blue, diffuse counterparts with a morphology consistent
with a faint dwarf galaxy beyond the Local Group. Optical spectroscopy of all
six candidate dwarf counterparts show that five have an H-derived
velocity consistent with the coincident HI cloud, confirming their association,
the sixth diffuse counterpart is likely a background object. The size and
luminosity of the UCHVC dwarfs is consistent with other known Local Volume
dwarf irregular galaxies. The gas fraction () of the five
dwarfs are generally consistent with that of dwarf irregular galaxies in the
Local Volume, although ALFALFA-Dw1 (associated with ALFALFA UCHVC
HVC274.68+74.70123) has a very high 40. Despite the
heterogenous nature of our search, we demonstrate that the current dwarf
companions to UCHVCs are at the edge of detectability due to their low surface
brightness, and that deeper searches are likely to find more stellar systems.
If more sensitive searches do not reveal further stellar counterparts to
UCHVCs, then the dearth of such systems around the Local Group may be in

Born-Infeld Quantum Condensate as Dark Energy in the Universe
Some cosmological implications of ultraviolet quantum effects leading to a
condensation of Born-Infeld matter are considered. It is shown that under very
general conditions the quantum condensate can not act as phantom matter if its
energy density is positive. On the other hand, it behaves as an effective
cosmological constant in the limit where quantum induced contributions to the

The Parkinson\u27s Disease Protein α-Synuclein Disrupts Cellular Rab Homeostasis
α-Synuclein (α-syn), a protein of unknown function, is the most abundant protein in Lewy bodies, the histological hallmark of Parkinson\u27s disease (PD). In yeast α-syn inhibits endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-to-Golgi (ERâGolgi) vesicle trafficking, which is rescued by overexpression of a Rab GTPase that regulates ERâGolgi trafficking. The homologous Rab1 rescues α-syn toxicity in dopaminergic neuronal models of PD. Here we investigate this conserved feature of α-syn pathobiology. In a cell-free system with purified transport factors α-syn inhibited ERâGolgi trafficking in an α-syn dose-dependent manner. Vesicles budded efficiently from the ER, but their docking or fusion to Golgi membranes was inhibited. Thus, the in vivo trafficking problem is due to a direct effect of α-syn on the transport machinery. By ultrastructural analysis the earliest in vivo defect was an accumulation of morphologically undocked vesicles, starting near the plasma membrane and growing into massive intracellular vesicular clusters in a dose-dependent manner. By immunofluorescence/immunoelectron microscopy, these clusters were associated both with α-syn and with diverse vesicle markers, suggesting that α-syn can impair multiple trafficking steps. Other Rabs did not ameliorate α-syn toxicity in yeast, but RAB3A, which is highly expressed in neurons and localized to presynaptic termini, and RAB8A, which is localized to post-Golgi vesicles, suppressed toxicity in neuronal models of PD. Thus, α-syn causes general defects in vesicle trafficking, to which dopaminergic neurons are especially sensitive
