Dental pathology of the wild Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus): The study of a 20th century Portuguese museum collection
For some wild canids, such as the Iberian wolf, there is a lack of in-depth knowledge about dental pathology. We aimed to evaluate it, in a standardized manner, in specimens from a Portuguese museum collection. Sixty-five deceased specimens of wild Iberian wolves, 61 complete skulls and 4 mandibles, collected in Portugal between 1977 and 1995, were analyzed. Sample comprised 18 females, 24 males and 23 individuals of undetermined sex. Teeth were evaluated by visual observation and dental radiography for tooth wear, periodontitis, fractures and other dental lesions. We have found several causes for teeth absence: artefactual, secondary to periodontitis and agenesia. About 30% of the teeth showed signs of wear. Only a small (<13%) fraction of maxillary and mandibular teeth did not show periodontitis. The tooth 308 showed periodontitis in all males (p = 0.017) and the tooth 104 was significantly affected by this condition in females (p = 0.020). A significant relationship was found between females and tooth wear in three teeth. Periodontitis showed a significant association with tooth wear (p < 0.001) and fractures (p = 0.027). Tooth fractures were more frequent in the maxilla than in the mandible. Seven periapical lesions, seven root fusions and three specimens with malocclusion were identified in the collection. Results are discussed integrating information from diet, habitat, genetic and spatial behavior. Dental radiography is here proposed as an approach for the age estimation in archaeological canids. Seagrass can mitigate negative ocean acidification effects on calcifying algae
The ultimate effect that ocean acidification (OA) and warming will have on the physiology of calcifying algae is still largely uncertain. Responses depend on the complex interactions between seawater chemistry, global/local stressors and species-specific physiologies. There is a significant gap regarding the effect that metabolic interactions between coexisting species may have on local seawater chemistry and the concurrent effect of OA. Here, we manipulated CO2 and temperature to evaluate the physiological responses of two common photoautotrophs from shallow tropical marine coastal ecosystems in Brazil: the calcifying alga Halimeda cuneata, and the seagrass Halodule wrightii. We tested whether or not seagrass presence can influence the calcification rate of a widespread and abundant species of Halimeda under OA and warming. Our results demonstrate that under elevated CO2, the high photosynthetic rates of H. wrightii contribute to raise H. cuneata calcification more than two-fold and thus we suggest that H. cuneata populations coexisting with H. wrightii may have a higher resilience to OA conditions. This conclusion supports the more general hypothesis that, in coastal and shallow reef environments, the metabolic interactions between calcifying and non-calcifying organisms are instrumental in providing refuge against OA effects and increasing the resilience of the more OA-susceptible species.E.B. would like to thank the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoas de NÃvel Superior (CAPES) for Masters

Nonlinear Sigma Model for Disordered Media: Replica Trick for Non-Perturbative Results and Interactions
In these lectures, given at the NATO ASI at Windsor (2001), applications of
the replicas nonlinear sigma model to disordered systems are reviewed. A
particular attention is given to two sets of issues. First, obtaining
non-perturbative results in the replica limit is discussed, using as examples
(i) an oscillatory behaviour of the two-level correlation function and (ii)
long-tail asymptotes of different mesoscopic distributions. Second, a new
variant of the sigma model for interacting electrons in disordered normal and
superconducting systems is presented, with demonstrating how to reduce it,
under certain controlled approximations, to known ``phase-only'' actions,

Detection of Geometric Phases in Superconducting Nanocircuits
When a quantum mechanical system undergoes an adiabatic cyclic evolution it
acquires a geometrical phase factor in addition to the dynamical one. This
effect has been demonstrated in a variety of microscopic systems. Advances in
nanotechnologies should enable the laws of quantum dynamics to be tested at the
macroscopic level, by providing controllable artificial two-level systems (for
example, in quantum dots and superconducting devices). Here we propose an
experimental method to detect geometric phases in a superconducting device. The
setup is a Josephson junction nanocircuit consisting of a superconducting
electron box. We discuss how interferometry based on geometrical phases may be
realized, and show how the effect may applied to the design of gates for
quantum computation.Comment: 12 page
Prevalência de internação hospitalar e fatores associados em Pelotas, RS
OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência de hospitalizações e identificar caracterÃsticas associadas à internação hospitalar. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal de base populacional realizado com indivÃduos de ambos os sexos, de 20 a 69 anos, residentes na zona urbana de Pelotas, RS, entre 1999 e 2000. Foi utilizado questionário padronizado e pré-codificado. Foi realizada análise estratificada entre os sexos e controle de fatores de confusão por meio de Regressão de Poisson. Foram incluÃdas na análise variáveis socioeconômicas, demográficas, hábitos de vida, morbidades e consulta com médico no último ano. RESULTADOS: Dos 1.916 indivÃduos, 146 (7,6%, IC95%:6,4;8,8) haviam sido hospitalizados no último ano desde a entrevista. Entre os homens, as caracterÃsticas que se mostraram associadas a internação foram: idade de 50 anos ou mais, entre cinco e sete anos de escolaridade, ex-fumantes, distúrbios psiquiátricos menores e consulta com médico no último ano. Entre as mulheres com idade entre 60 e 69 anos, entre cinco e sete anos de escolaridade e consulta médica no perÃodo de um ano antes da entrevista, ocorreram maiores prevalências de hospitalização. As mulheres que consumiam menos de 30 g/dia de álcool mostraram menor freqüência de hospitalização. A prevalência de internação por causas sensÃveis à atenção primária foi de 13,0% (IC 95%: 7,6;18,5). CONCLUSÕES: Homens e mulheres apresentaram prevalências semelhantes de internação hospitalar.
