    AMELIORATING EFFECT OF HAWTHORN (CRATAEGUS OXYACANTHA) AND PHYSICAL EXERCISE ON ACUTE PENICILLIN INDUCED SEIZURES IN GERBILS

    The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) and physical activity. We studied its effect on penicilline induced epilepticus (Pie) in gerbils. Pie was induced by administration of penicilline G (500 IU, ip). The gerbils were divided randomly in four groups (6 animals per each group) and studied as described below: 1) Control group 2) Exercise group (30 min/each day for 8 weeks) (Eg) 3) Extract group, 50mg/kg/day/animal in 1 ml saline, 3 h prior to exercise (Exe) 4) Exercise+Extract + (Exe+Ex). The severity of Pie was observed and recorded. The means of latencies (Mean±SE) were 236±45, 369±36, 386±58 and 433±37 ms in groups of control, Exe, Ex, and Exe+Ex respectively.     Determination of Residual Forces in Mechanism Assembled by Edge-Form Rolling

    Steering and suspension systems are components that supply driving safety in vehicles. For a correct working the mechanisms of these systems consist of many ball-joints that have different functions. Generally the ball-joints are assembled to systems in press-fit without any gaps, but even with residual forces. On the other hand excessive tightness causes high moments, which requires additional processes of manufacturing. But low tightness also creates gaps in joints. None of these conditions are desired. Manufacturing a ball-race that has long-life, low-friction and provides required working angles in every road condition, can be designed after long test processes and sample productions including lots of improvements. An important element of steering systems in vehicles is suspension ball-race that can be manufactured by assembling with plastic deformation after designing the ball-joint. In this study, during the manufacturing of the suspension ball-race supplying the motion transmission, the edge-form rolling process that is a subsection of rolling process of manufacturing methods based on plastic deformation was examined. Following 5E learning model during a lesson, students can engage in a topic after being served to mitigate cognitive disequilibrium or familiar with daily-life examples such as yoghurt fermentation, oven spring, etc. explore the topic making an observation or testing hypothesis, explain and relate their experiences scientifically, extend or elaborate their knowledge and then being evaluated.     Axillary Artery Transection After Shoulder Dislocation

    Axillary artery transection after shoulder dislocation without bone fracture is extremely rare. Early diagnosis, use of the occlusion balloon for proximal control of axillary artery bleeding, and surgical treatment are important to avoid morbidity and mortality. A 74-year old man presented with a complete transection of axillary artery associated with anterior dislocation of the shoulder without bone fracture. Left axillary artery transection was seen on angiography. An angioplasty balloon was used to prevent bleeding from the subclavian artery. The brachial plexus was compressed by a hematoma. Axillary artery repair was performed with an autologous reversed saphenous vein graft interposition. The patient had palpable distal pulses post-operatively. Motor function was significantly improved but still impaired in the postoperative period. Follow-up at 3 months showed good function of the left arm. Successful management of axillary artery injuries requires prompt diagnosis and surgical treatment. Neurologic injury may affect the functional outcome of the limb

    Primary hyperaldosteronism presenting with rhabdomyolysis in emergency room – Case report

    Primary hyperaldosteronism, is a well-known cause of secondary hypertension, mostly idiopathic hypertension or arising from aldosterone-producing adenomas. It is characterized with resistant hypertension, hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis related with aldosterone production excess and plasma renin activity suppression. Hypokalemic rhabdomyolysis usually presents with muscle pain, cramps, fatigability and generalized weakness. Rhabdomyolysis due to hypokalemia is a rare complication of primary hyperaldosteronism reported within a limited number of cases in medical literature. Diagnosis and treatment of primary hyperaldosteronism is fundamentally important because of the probability of certain cure with accurate surgery. Here, we report a 38-year-old female with hypertension related with primary hyperaldosteronism who presented with rhabdomyolysis most likely due to profound hypokalemia

    Tolerating subretinal fluid in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration with intravitreal aflibercept

    Objective: To compare the anatomical and functional outcomes of intensive and relaxed intravitreal aflibercept regimen in the management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Methods: The medical records of 50 eyes of 50 patients with treatment-naive neovascular age-related macular degeneration, who underwent intravitreal aflibercept therapy in the Retinal Department of University of Health Sciences Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital (Istanbul, Turkey), were retrospectively reviewed. The demographic features and best-corrected visual acuities at baseline and at 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th-, 6th-, 10th- and 12th- months, optical coherence tomography measurements, presence of intraretinal fluid, subretinal fluid and intraocular pressure values were studied. The patients were divided into two groups: intensive (subretinal fluid intolerant) and relaxed (<200 microns subretinal fluid tolerated) intravitreal aflibercept regimens. Results: The change in the mean best-corrected visual acuities from baseline to 12th month was 13.72 ± 33.97 letters in the intensive treatment group and 8.68 ± 27.22 in the relaxed group. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups ( p  = 0.566). Similar proportions of both groups achieved ⩾10 letters gain (%48 vs. %40, respectively; p  = 0.755) and ⩾10 letters loss (%20 vs. %24, respectively; p  = 0.755). The mean central subfield thickness values decreased statistically significantly in both groups ( p  < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (442.40 ± 161.32 to 318.0 ± 63.10 vs. 431.64 ± 151.52 to 303.08 ± 140.91, respectively; p  = 0.724). The mean total injection numbers were significantly lower in the relaxed group (6.4 ± 1.65 vs. 4.8 ± 1.45, respectively; p  = 0.01). Conclusion: Relaxed intravitreal aflibercept regimen has comparable efficiency and safety outcomes at 12 months with intensive intravitreal aflibercept regimen with fewer injections in the management of neovascular age-related macular degeneration

    EFFECTS OF MOLDSTOP (R) ON AFLATOXICOSIS IN QUAILS

    ALTINTAS, Levent/0000-0002-5148-723XWOS: 000262248800015This study was conducted to evaluate the toxic effects of anatoxin (AF) oil the growth performance of quails, and to determine the preventive efficacy of MOLDSTOP (R) (calcium formate, calcium propionate, citric acid, sorbic acid, acetic acid, and carrier). A total of 60 one-clay-old quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) of both sexes were equally divided into four experimental groups each comprising of five replicates of three birds. The supplementation of diet with AF decreased significantly (P<0.001) the feed consumption. The 0.5% addition of MOLDSTOP (R) to the AF diet did not significantly prevent or reduce negative effect of AF on feed consumption at any time period. Light microscopic examination demonstrated that the addition of MOLDSTOP (R) did not decrease flat deposition Caused by the toxin, and besides, an electron microscopic examination indicated the reorganisation in the endoplasmic reticulum and increase in the number of ribosomes and polisomes compared to the AF plus MOLDSTOP (R) group. The data indicated that the addition of MOLDSTOP (R) to diets containing AF did not prevent the negative effects of AF observed in the quail
