    Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Unbound Philanthropy Supported Options Initiative: Evaluation of Phase One

    The Supported Options Initiative is one element of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation's Social Justice programme, delivered in partnership with Unbound Philanthropy (the Foundations). The first phase of the Initiative ran for two years from 2012. Its strategic goal was to 'support and encourage migrant, youth and advice organisations to better understand, respond to and reach out to young and child migrants with irregular immigration status, and capture and share learning to improve practice and policy'. In addition, three priority outcomes were specified:- Better advice services to young migrants through holistic approaches to their advice, support and information needs (legal and social)- Improved provision of online information and support to young migrants- Increased understanding of the issues facing young people leaving the UK, forcibly or voluntarily, and piloting options to better support them

    The Combined Elevation Test (CET) in Adolescent School Children: A Pilot Study

    The Combined Elevation Test (CET) is a musculoskeletal screening technique (MST) that replicates the streamline position in swimming and is commonly used in various sports. Although CET is widely used, no normative data exist within an adolescent population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a large data set for the CET within an adolescent population and to evaluate the influence of various demographic and anthropometric variables. Data were collected for 416 participants aged between 8 and 18 years old. Age and arm span showed a significant correlation with CET scores (arm span rs (105) = 0.478, p = 0.000; age rs (416) = 0.238, p = 0.000). Regression analysis further quantified the influence of arm span and age on CET scores, accounting for 23.1% and 5.3% of variability respectively. These results can be used as a reference point for clinicians and coaches who are using the CET within their assessments

    Making the case for unrestricted funding: A summary of key points for foundation staff and Boards

    This briefing summaries the key points from IVAR research to help grantmakers and Boards to consider and make the case for unrestricted funding. The evidence is clear and compelling: the preference for restricted funding rests on familiarity, not evidence. While restricted funding can be the right choice, it has not earned its place as the dominant model.  Perceived barriers should not deter a change that presents value to both charities and funders. In this short briefing, we lay out the value of unrestricted funding, consolidated from our research to date, to help grantmakers and board members clearly consider and make the case for unrestricted funding: both in their organisations and to colleagues in the sector

    Local cross-sector partnerships tackling the challenges collaboratively

    We focus in this article on the challenges local governmental (municipal) and third-sector (nonprofit) organizations face when they seek to work collaboratively or in partnership. We build on the findings of an action research project to draw out the practical implications of cross-sector working for the organizations involved. We describe jointly agreed suggestions for tackling the challenges that emerged when third-sector organizations and local governmental agencies themselves worked collaboratively in a search for mutually acceptable solutions. Finally, we draw out learning points on cross-sector working for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers

    Thinking about... core funding draws on learning from their own and others' research and interviews with key informants from seven charitable foundations providing core funding to shed light on why, when and how to use core funding. Their particular focus is social welfarevoluntary organisations, many of which are local. This part of the voluntary sector relies mainly on two types of income – grants from statutory bodies and fundraising from trusts and foundations. This makes their dependence on core funding from trusts and foundations, and full costrecovery, even more critical

    This report examines different approaches to funding plus used by UK charitable foundations. In addition, the survey tries to uncover the principal benefits, challenges and risks of these approaches in order to generate practically useful learning about funding plus.In this regard, the research found that the funding plus field comprises a broad range of definitions, purposes and activity. Within this we were able to identify five overarching preconditions for success in funding plus:- strong personal relationships- good knowledge of grantees and the sector in which they operate- grantees that are ready and willing for an engaged relationship with a funder- bespoke rather than standardised or prescriptive approaches- careful and responsible management of power relationships between funder and grante

    Management of atraumatic shoulder instability in physiotherapy (MASIP): a survey of physiotherapy practice

    © The Author(s). 2021 Open Access This article is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Background: The impact of atraumatic shoulder instability (ASI) on patients can be extensive, its management complex, with a biopsychosocial approach recommended. Currently how physiotherapists manage ASI is unknown or the extent to which current clinical practice aligns with existing evidence. At the time of this study no national guidelines or consensus to direct practice existed.  Methods: A cross-sectional electronic survey was distributed between July-September 2018, targeting UK-based physiotherapists managing shoulder pathology. Respondents were invited to describe their management of ASI, and rate their awareness and utilisation of various treatment techniques on a Likert-scale; median and interquartile ranges were calculated. Free text survey items were analysed using quantitative content analysis (QCA) to identify codes and categories. Means and percentages were calculated to summarise QCA and descriptive data.  Results: Valid survey responses were analysed (n = 135). Respondents had between 2 and 39 years of physiotherapy experience (mean = 13.9 years); the majority (71.1 %) reported that ASI made up 90 % citing the Stanmore Classification. Physiotherapists adapted their management according to clinical presentation, responding to differing biopsychosocial needs of the patient scenario. Most respondents (> 80 %) did not use a protocol to guide their management. Exercise was the most utilised management approach for ASI, followed by education; novel treatment strategies, including cortical rehabilitation, were also reported.  Conclusion: Findings indicate physiotherapists utilise a wide range of treatment strategies and respond to biopsychosocial cues when managing patients with ASI. The majority reported not being very confident in managing this condition, however only a minority use rehabilitation protocols to support their management. Some interventions that respondents reported using lacked evidence to support their use in ASI management and further research regarding effectiveness is required. Guidelines have been published since this survey; the impact of these will need evaluating to determine their effectiveness in the future.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Kinetic model of DNA replication in eukaryotic organisms

    We formulate a kinetic model of DNA replication that quantitatively describes recent results on DNA replication in the in vitro system of Xenopus laevis prior to the mid-blastula transition. The model describes well a large amount of different data within a simple theoretical framework. This allows one, for the first time, to determine the parameters governing the DNA replication program in a eukaryote on a genome-wide basis. In particular, we have determined the frequency of origin activation in time and space during the cell cycle. Although we focus on a specific stage of development, this model can easily be adapted to describe replication in many other organisms, including budding yeast.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures: see also cond-mat/0306546 & physics/030615

    The structure of Herpesvirus Fusion Glycoprotein B-Bilayer Complex reveals the protein-membrane and lateral protein-protein interaction

    Glycoprotein B (gB) is a key component of the complex herpesvirus fusion machinery. We studied membrane interaction of two gB ectodomain forms and present an electron cryotomography structure of the gB-bilayer complex. The two forms differed in presence or absence of the membrane proximal region (MPR) but showed an overall similar trimeric shape. The presence of the MPR impeded interaction with liposomes. In contrast, the MPR-lacking form interacted efficiently with liposomes. Lateral interaction resulted in coat formation on the membranes. The structure revealed that interaction of gB with membranes was mediated by the fusion loops and limited to the outer membrane leaflet. The observed intrinsic propensity of gB to cluster on membranes indicates an additional role of gB in driving the fusion process forward beyond the transient fusion pore opening and subsequently leading to fusion pore expansion
