    Battery state of charge management strategies for a real-time controller of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

    Abstract This paper deals with the development of energy management strategies for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), aiming to reduce the global energy consumption. The vehicle is a Plug-in HEV, and its model had been validated on New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). A real-time model-based supervisory controller is implemented, called Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), and it is compared with the original heuristic control. Three ways to manage the energy stored in the battery along the driving mission are presented. Predictive information is then introduced to increase vehicle driveability. Conclusions summarize the benefits of such approach, showing satisfactory results also considering the driver comfort

    Physical activity in elderly kidney transplant patients with multiple renal arteries

    Introduction: Kidney transplantation (KT) is the gold standard for treatment of patients with end- stage-renal disease. To expand the donor reserve, it is necessary to use marginal/suboptimal kidneys. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the short/long-term outcome of 34 KT elderly patients who received allografts with vascular abnormalities (MRA group), in comparison with 34 KT patients who received a kidney with a single renal artery (SRA group) pair-matched by age, length of time on dialysis, comorbidity and donor age. Results: All participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire at KT, and then 4, 8, and 12 weeks after transplantation. Our data indicate that kidney with vascular anatomical variants may be successfully transplanted, since the overall rate of surgical complications was 20.6% in the SRA group and 17.6% in the MRA group and that the 5-year survival rate after KT was 100% in both groups. Conclusions: The data also underline that individualized physical activity programs induced similar excellent results in both groups, improving physical capacities, arterial pressure, lipid metabolism, insulin sensitivity, quality of life and physical and mental status

    Antifungal susceptibility of invasive yeast isolates in Italy: the GISIA3 study in critically ill patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Yeasts are a common cause of invasive fungal infections in critically ill patients. Antifungal susceptibility testing results of clinically significant fungal strains are of interest to physicians, enabling them to adopt appropriate strategies for empiric and prophylactic therapies. We investigated the antifungal susceptibility of yeasts isolated over a 2-year period from hospitalised patients with invasive yeast infections.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>638 yeasts were isolated from the blood, central venous catheters and sterile fluids of 578 patients on general and surgical intensive care units and surgical wards. Etest strips and Sensititre panels were used to test the susceptibility of the isolates to amphotericin B, anidulafungin, caspofungin, fluconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole and voriconazole in 13 laboratories centres (LC) and two co-ordinating centres (CC). The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) reference broth microdilution method was used at the CCs for comparison.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Etest and Sensititre (LC/CC) MIC<sub>90 </sub>values were, respectively: amphotericin B 0.5/0.38, 1/1 mg/L; anidulafungin 2/1.5 and 1/1 mg/L; caspofungin 1/0.75 and 0.5/0.5 mg/L; fluconazole 12/8 and 16/16 mg/L; itraconazole 1/1.5, 0.5/0.5 mg/L; posaconazole 0.5 mg/L and voriconazole 0.25 mg/L for all. The overall MIC<sub>90 </sub>values were influenced by the reduced susceptibility of <it>Candida parapsilosis </it>isolates to echinocandins and a reduced or lack of susceptibility of <it>Candida glabrata </it>and <it>Candida krusei </it>to azoles, in particular fluconazole and itraconazole. Comparison of the LC and CC results showed good Essential Agreement (90.3% for Etest and 92.9% for Sensititre), and even higher Categorical Agreement (93.9% for Etest and 96% for Sensititre); differences were observed according to the species, method, and antifungal drug. No cross-resistance between echinocandins and triazoles was detected.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data confirm the different antifungal susceptibility patterns among species, and highlight the need to perform antifungal susceptibility testing of clinically relevant yeasts. With the exception of a few species (e.g. <it>C. glabrata </it>for azoles and <it>C. parapsilosis </it>for echinocandins), the findings of our study suggest that two of the most widely used commercial methods (Etest and Sensititre) provide valid and reproducible results.</p

    Efficacy and safety of growth hormone treatment in children with short stature: the Italian cohort of the GeNeSIS clinical study

    Purpose: We examined auxological changes in growth hormone (GH)-treated children in Italy using data from the Italian cohort of the multinational observational Genetics and Neuroendocrinology of Short Stature International Study (GeNeSIS) of pediatric patients requiring GH treatment. Methods: We studied 711 children (median baseline age 9.6&nbsp;years). Diagnosis associated with short stature was as determined by the investigator. Height standard deviation score (SDS) was evaluated yearly until final or near-final height (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;78). Adverse events were assessed in all GH-treated patients. Results: The diagnosis resulting in GH treatment was GH deficiency (GHD) in 85.5&nbsp;% of patients, followed by Turner syndrome (TS 6.6&nbsp;%). Median starting GH dose was higher in patients with TS (0.30&nbsp;mg/kg/week) than patients with GHD (0.23&nbsp;mg/kg/week). Median (interquartile range) GH treatment duration was 2.6 (0.6\u20133.7) years. Mean (95&nbsp;% confidence interval) final height SDS gain was 2.00 (1.27\u20132.73) for patients with organic GHD (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;18) and 1.19 (0.97\u20131.40) for patients with idiopathic GHD (n&nbsp;=&nbsp;41), but lower for patients with TS, 0.37 ( 120.03 to 0.77, n&nbsp;=&nbsp;13). Final height SDS was&nbsp;&gt; 122 for 94&nbsp;% of organic GHD, 88&nbsp;% of idiopathic GHD and 62&nbsp;% of TS patients. Mean age at GH start was lower for organic GHD patients, and treatment duration was longer than for other groups, resulting in greater mean final height gain. GH-related adverse events occurred mainly in patients diagnosed with idiopathic GHD. Conclusions: Data from the Italian cohort of GeNeSIS showed auxological changes and safety of GH therapy consistent with results from international surveillance databases

    Il ruolo giocato dalla Corte di giustizia nel campo della politica economica e della politica monetaria è stato importante quanto sottostimato. Le due competenze dell’Unione sono profondamente differenti - ciascuna dotata di significative peculiarità - e tuttavia strettamente interconnesse. Definire i confini incerti tra politica economica e politica monetaria è stato il ruolo più importante svolto dalla Corte in questo campo. Questo ha comportato una precisazione dei ruoli delle istituzioni chiamate ad agire - Commissione, Consiglio, Banca centrale - così come dei limiti all’indipendenza dell’istituto di emissione, ma anche della ripartizione di competenze tra Stati e Unione. Dal 2012, un’ulteriore funzione è stata esercitata dalla Corte: la verifica della legittimità dell’intervento straordinario della BCE nell’economia per gestire le crisi. L’assenza nei trattati europei di disposizioni specifiche che contemplassero un ruolo della Banca come prestatore di ultima istanza o nella gestione delle crisi economiche e finanziarie spiega bene le contestazioni dell’ultimo decennio, così come la necessità di pronunce autorevoli da parte della Suprema Corte europea. Queste si collocano a buon diritto nel solco della giurisprudenza in tema di rule of law e di garanzia del rispetto dei principi generali nell’ordinamento europeo

    Predictive Energy Management Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Fuel Economy Improvement and Battery Capacity Sensitivity Analysis

    This paper shows the influence of different battery charge management strategies on the fuel economy of a hybrid parallel axle-split vehicle in a real driving scenario, for a vehicle control system that has the additional possibility to split the torque between front and rear axles. The first section regards the validation of a self-developed Model in the Loop (MiL) environment of a P1-P4 plug-in hybrid electric car, using experimental data of a New European Driving Cycle test. In its original version, which is implemented on-board the vehicle, the energy management supervisor implements a heuristic, or rule-based, Energy Management Strategy (EMS). During this project, a different EMS has been developed, consisting of a sub-optimal control scheme called Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), explained in detail in the second section. After that, the focus is on the evaluation of the benefits coming from different battery charge management strategies, which can be charge-sustaining, charge-depleting/charge-sustaining or charge blended, since the vehicle is a PHEV. The fuel economy improvements, using each strategy, are compared and one of them is then combined with the knowledge of future driving conditions (the so-called electronic horizon), mainly speed and altitude profiles. Therefore, the proposed controller would be ready for on-board implementation. In the last section, a sensitivity analysis that relates the results obtained with the battery capacity is carried out, to evaluate the influence of this strategic parameter on the battery charge management strategy choice. The paper shows the fuel economy potential of a physics-based approach like ECMS for a plug-in HEV, and how it can directly benefit from the prediction of future driving conditions, especially if the battery capacity is limited

    MOSAIC+: tools to assist virtual restoration

    In many cases, virtual restoration is the only way to have an idea of the original appearance of an artwork. In particular, in the archeological field, it is useful to both assist and guide the operator in physical reconstruction, and to provide to the final visitor a complete vision of the artwork even though the original is damaged or lacks some parts. In this work, we propose a set of tools useful in two different restoration steps. The first one helps the expert to carry out reconstruction of fragmented artifacts in an easier and more effective way. The second provides a view of the artifact after virtually eliminating a craquelure
