The price elasticity of external demand: how does Portugal compare with other euro area countries?

    Get PDF
This paper estimates the price elasticity of external demand of Portuguese exports in the period 1995-2009 and compares it with those of other euro area countries. This proxy of the export price elasticity is computed as a weighted average of the import demand elasticities in each individual country-product destination market, using the elasticities of substitution across imported varieties of Broda et al. (2006). Overall, Portugal tends to export to individual markets which have, on average, a lower price elasticity than the markets where other euro area countries export to. Therefore, the product and geographical composition of Portuguese exports reduces their exposure to relative price fluctuations.

In this contribution, four species of Agathoxylon are described from the La Matilde Formation, Gran Bajo de San Julián and central and south-western sectors of Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Agathoxylon agathioides (Kräusel and Jain) n. comb., Agathoxylon santalense (Sah and Jain) n. comb., Agathoxylon termieri (Attims) Gnaedinger and Herbst, and the new species Agathoxylon santacruzense n. sp. are described based on a detailed description of the secondary xylem. In this work, it was possible to construct scatter plots to elucidate the anatomical differences between the fossil species described on quantitative anatomical data. Comparisons are made with other Agathoxylon species from Gondwana. These parameters can be used to discriminate genera and species of wood found in the same formation, as well as to establish differences/similarities between other taxa described in other formations. Some localities contain innumerable in situ petrified trees, which allowed us to infer that these taxa formed small forests, or local forests, or small forests within a dense forest, which is a habitat coincident with the extant Araucariaceae.Fil: Cabral Kloster, Adriana.

    A Geographical Perspective

Manoel, L., Costa, A. C., & Cabral, P. (2022). Voter Turnout in Portugal: A Geographical Perspective. Papers in Applied Geography, 8(1), 88-111. https://doi.org/10.1080/23754931.2021.1958251The decline of voter turnout in Portugal was confirmed in the legislative election of 2015. The unquestionable democratic value associated with the act of voting, leads to the discussion of this issue, and emphasizes the need for additional investigation. Particularly, it is crucial to identify the characteristics of citizens who vote, to better understand the phenomenon and think about solutions. This work identified the most significant sociodemographic variables in explaining voter turnout in continental Portugal and described the relationship between those variables and voter turnout, including the geographical variation existing across the municipalities. A Semiparametric Geographically Weighted Regression (SGWR) model enabled the investigation of local variations in turnout values, simultaneously considering that its relationship with some variables might vary over space. Results show that turnout is influenced by a set of sociodemographic variables. While some variables affect turnout differently over the country (percentage of family cores with children aged less than 15, and percentage of owner-occupied houses), others affect it uniformly (percentage of graduated residents, percentage of classic families, and distance to Lisbon or Oporto–the nearest). These results suggest the use of a semiparametric approach to better understand turnout and for further research on voting issues.authorsversionpublishe

The themes related to recreational activities (cultural and sports) of young people in local newspapers occupy an important space in the news analyzed. However, young people are not the protagonists and the main sources of these pieces of news. They are spoken by the sports leaders, by the officials in charge of cultural and recreational areas, and by the companies that dedicate their products to "the youth sectors". The analysis, based on the methodology of establishing media agendas and frames, is part of the partial results of the research project "Visibility policies and youth agendas in Viedma" (2015-2028) of the Universidad Nacional del Comahue.

Industrial development in east Timor: an exploratory study of attitudes and perceptions towards the future

    Get PDF
Industrialization is essential for the economic development of a country (Porter, 2004). There are few examples of countries that have made the transition without industrialization, much at the expense of the existence of valuable natural resources (such as oil and diamonds), but with the resulting social inequalities. Industrialization is the normal process for the development of the economies, associated with the phenomenon of globalization of the industry and markets, allows the rapid growth of the same. Take the case of China, which in just over twenty years, went from a really rural to an industrial power in global terms (UNIDO, 2009). Why promote industrialization in poor countries? Because if the developed countries to support industrialization in developing countries benefit from cheaper manufactured goods and the process allows to reduce the gap and inequalities between developed and developing countries (UNIDO, 2009). East Timor was an overseas province of Portugal until 1974 and for 450 years. After this period, the territory was invaded and occupied by Indonesia, a situation that lasted until the referendum held on August 30, 1999. The process leading up to this historic event was long and difficult but with the support of the United Nations, selfdetermination has finally arrived in East Timor in 2002. The proposal of the government of East Timor to the economic development is a strategic long term model and intends to reflect the will and aspirations of the people. Being a young country, post-conflict and with low incomes, it is pointed out the need to implement a unique and specific strategy to the country in order to bring prosperity. One way to achieve these aspirations may pass through private sector investment through the creation and implementation of industry in the country. This allows for increased employment, improved living conditions of the Timorese people and consequently the economic development of Timor-Leste, reinforcing the message widely disseminated in "Goodbye Conflict, Welcome Development". For the period 2011-2030, the first decade will focus on creating the basic conditions for development in all areas: infrastructure, education and training, health, agricultural productivity and food selfsufficiency, sustainable urbanization and development of important sectors industry and services. Private investment in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Research and Experimental Development (R&D) in key sectors are one of the four pillars of the economic framework by 2020, presented by the government of East Timor (PED 2010). The present study aims to understand the attitudes and perceptions of the East Timorese in relation to industrial development of the country. Taking as a starting point, a survey of the population of East Timor, named as Projeto Timor, we present and discuss the results obtained on various issues such as attitudes in relation to existing industrial development potential of the country, perceived advantages and disadvantages of industrialization and industrial sectors that are perceived as more relevant to East Timor

The Latin American Association for Radio Education based in Quito, Ecuador, was 40 years old in 2012. The process was called ALER 2020 was “playing and turning” on the popular and community radio in Latin America and the Caribbean. The challenge posed to him by ALER 2020 to radios is to rethink the “for what” communication and popular education today and to what extent it may be relevant to contribute to the construction of happy communities with sustainable lifestyles, moving away from the mandate of “development”. The Argentine Forum of Community Radios FARCO, has participated in this process, which is still underway.Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Socia
