    Comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties at different length scales of WC-Co hardmetals consolidated by binder jetting 3D printing and hip

    Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly growing as a revolutionary technique. It provides an interesting ability to produce complex geometries, a key feature for enhancing performance and widening application fields of hardmetal components, limited characteristic for traditional processing techniques. Within this context, it is necessary to study the mechanical integrity of samples produced by AM [AMed] where it is expected to find characteristics linked to the shaping route followed, and study if they will have influence on the final behaviour regarding the mechanical properties expect for a specimen process by a traditional manufacturing route. This work aims to study the final microstructure, mechanical properties and layer assemblage at different length scales for a 12%wtCo– WC grade hardmetals of medium grain size consolidated by binder jetting 3DP and subsequent SinterHIP. In addition, compare this results with the ones obtained from a 12%wtCo–WC specimens process by means of a traditional technique like Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) using the same raw material like in the AMed specimens. Hardness Vickers at macro- and microlength scale as well as scratch tests, using different loads and indenter tips, are conducted on both type of samples. The results are analysed and discussed in terms of oriented layer-like material assemblage effects on microstructural variability, mechanical response determined by intrinsic physical behaviour of the material and feedstock used

    Corrosion evaluation of austenitic and duplex stainless steels in molten carbonate salts at 600 °C for thermal energy storage

    Next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP) plants are required to operate at temperatures as high as possible to reach a better energy efficiency. This means significant challenges for the construction materials in terms of corrosion resistance, among others. In the present work, the corrosion behavior in a molten eutectic ternary Li2CO3-Na2CO3-K2CO3 mixture at 600 °C was studied for three stainless steels: an austenitic grade AISI 301LN (SS301) and two duplex grades, namely 2205 (DS2205) and 2507 (DS2507). Corrosion tests combined with complementary microscopy, microanalysis and mechanical characterization techniques were employed to determine the corrosion kinetics of the steels and the oxide scales formed on the surface. The results showed that all three materials exhibited a corrosion kinetics close to a parabolic law, and their corrosion rates increased in the following order: DS2507 < SS301 < DS2205. The analyses of the oxide scales evidenced an arranged multilayer system with LiFeO2, LiCrO2, FeCr2O4 and NiO as the main compounds. While the Ni-rich inner layer of the scales presented a good adhesion to the metallic substrate, the outer layer formed by LiFeO2 exhibited a higher concentration of porosity and voids. Both the Cr and Ni contents at the inner layer and the defects at the outer layer were crucial for the corrosion resistance for each steel. Among the studied materials, super duplex stainless steel 2507 is found to be the most promising alternative for thermal energy storage of those structural components for CSP plants.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Effect of hypocaloric diet with a commertial formula in weight loss and quality of life in obese patients with chronic osteoarthritis

    Producción CientíficaIntroducción: El objetivo de nuestro estudio fue evaluar en pacientes obesos con osteoartritis crónica el impacto sobre la calidad de vida y el control metabólico de una intervención dietética con una formula comercial hipocalórica. Material y métodos: Se evaluó una muestra de 55 pacientes obesos con osteoartritis crónica. EL estudió consistió en un programa de 12 semanas de reducción de peso en el que los paciente recibían al día dos envases de Optisource PlusŸ. Resultados: Se dividieron a los pacientes en dos grupos, uno que perdió menos de un 9% (grupo 1) y el grupo 2 (mås de 9% de pérdida de peso). Los pacientes en el grupo 2 mostraron una mejoria en la puntuacion total del test de calidad de vida SF-36 (4,0 ± 6,1 puntos), en el campo de la función física del SF 36 (1,8 ± 3,4 puntos), el en campo del componente físico del SF 36 (0,6 ± 1,6 puntos) y en el campo de la vitalidad del SF 36 (2,7 ± 4,6 puntos). También mejoraron de manera significativa, la puntuación total del test específico de calidad de vida para osteoartritis WOMAC (-8,2 ± 15,0 puntos), el dominio funcional del test WOMAC (- 6.5+/-10.6 puntos) y el dominio de la rigidez del test WOMAC (-0,7 ± 2,1 puntos). Conclusión: El efecto sobre la calidad de vida fue superior en el grupo con porcentaje de pérdida de peso > 9% con la formula hipocalórica comercial

    Generation and Applications of Extreme-Ultraviolet Vortices

    Vortex light beams are structures of the electromagnetic field with a spiral phase ramp around a point-phase singularity. These vortices have many applications in the optical regime, ranging from optical trapping and quantum information to spectroscopy and microscopy. The extension of vortices into the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV)/X-ray regime constitutes a significant step forward to bring those applications to the nanometer or even atomic scale. The recent development of a new generation of X-ray sources, and the refinement of other techniques, such as harmonic generation, have boosted the interest of producing vortex beams at short wavelengths. In this manuscript, we review the recent studies in the subject, and we collect the major prospects of this emerging field.     The Antioxidant Activity of Thymus serpyllum Extract Protects against the Inflammatory State and Modulates Gut Dysbiosis in Diet-Induced Obesity in Mice

    Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in alternative therapies in the treatment of metabolic syndrome that combine efficacy and safety profiles. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of an extract of Thymus serpyllum, containing rosmarinic acid, on high-fat diet (HFD)- induced obesity mice, highlighting the impact of its antioxidant activity on the inflammatory status and gut dysbiosis. The extract was administered daily (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg) in HFD-fed mice. The treatment reduced body weight gain, glucose and lipid metabolic profiles. Moreover, the extract ameliorated the inflammatory status, with the c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JUNK) pathway being involved, and showed a significant antioxidant effect by the reduction of radical scavenging activity and the mitigation of lipid peroxidation. Moreover, the extract was able to modulate the altered gut microbiota, restoring microbial richness and diversity, and augmenting the counts of short-chain fatty acid producing bacteria, which have been associated with the maintenance of gut permeability and weight regulation. In conclusion, the antioxidant activity of Thymus serpyllum extract displayed a positive impact on obesity and its metabolic alterations, also reducing systemic inflammation.     Beneficial Effects of Limosilactobacillus fermentum in the DCA Experimental Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Rats

    Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716, a probiotic strain isolated from human milk, has reported beneficial effects on different gastrointestinal disorders. Moreover, it has shown its ability to restore altered immune responses, in association with microbiome modulation in different pathological conditions. Therefore, our aim was to assess the effects of a Limosilacbacillus fermentum CECT5716 in a rat experimental model of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) that resembles human IBS. The experimental IBS was induced by deoxycholic acid (DCA) in rats and then, Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 (109 CFU/day/rat) was administered. Behavioral studies, hyperalgesia and intestinal hypersensitivity determinations were performed and the impact of the probiotic on the inflammatory and intestinal barrier integrity was evaluated. Additionally, the gut microbiota composition was analyzed. Limosilactobacillus fermentum CECT5716 attenuated the anxiety-like behavior as well as the visceral hypersensitivity and referred pain. Moreover, this probiotic ameliorated the gut inflammatory status, re-establishing the altered intestinal permeability, reducing the mast cell degranulation and re-establishing the gut dysbiosis in experimental IBS.     Porto-Sinusoidal Vascular Disease Associated to Oxaliplatin: An Entity to Think about It

    Portal sinusoidal vascular disease is a presinusoidal cause of portal hypertension (PHT) of unknown etiology, characterized by typical manifestations of PHT (esophageal varices, ascites, portosystemic collaterals), plaquetopenia and splenomegaly with a gradient of portal pressure slightly increased, according to the presinusoidal nature of the PHT. A few cases in the literature have shown a relationship between oxaliplatin and the development of presinusoidal portal hypertension, years after the chemotherapy for colorectal cancer (therefore, different to sinusoidal obstruction syndrome). There are three mechanisms through which oxaliplatin can cause sinusoidal damage: 1) damage at the level of endothelial cells and stimulates the release of free radicals and depletion of glutathione transferase, with altering the integrity of the sinusoidal cells. The damage in the endothelial sinusoidal cells allows to erythrocytes to across into the Dissé space and formation of perisinusoidal fibrosis, 2) the appearance of nodular regenerative hyperplasia is favored by the chronic hypoxia of the centrilobular areas and, finally, 3) oxaliplatin can generate an obliteration of the blood capillaries and zones of parenchymal extinction. These three facts can develop, in a minority of cases, the appearance of a presinusoidal increase of portal pressure, which typically appears years after the completion of chemotherapy and sometimes is underdiagnosed until variceal bleeding, ascites or encephalopathy appear.     The melatonergic agonist agomelatine ameliorates high fat diet-induced obesity in mice through the modulation of the gut microbiome

    Background and purpose: Melatonin has shown beneficial effects on obesity, both in humans and experimental models, via regulating the altered circadian rhythm and thus ameliorating the gut dysbiosis associated with this metabolic condition. However, its clinical use is limited, mostly due to its short half-life. Agomelatine is an agonist of the melatonin receptors that could be used to manage obesity and offer a better profile than melatonin. Experimental approach: Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a high fat diet and orally treated for five weeks with agomelatine, or melatonin or metformin, used as control drugs. Metabolic profile, inflammatory status, vascular dysfunction and intestinal microbiota composition were assessed. Key results: Agomelatine lessened body weight gain, enhanced glucose and lipid metabolisms, and improved insulin resistance. It also reduced the obesity-associated inflammatory status and endothelial dysfunction, probably linked to its effect on gut dysbiosis, consisting of the restoration of bacterial populations with key functions, such as short chain fatty acid production.
