    Diagrams :As large-scale generative systems

[EN] This article aims, on the one hand, to determine the defining characteristics of those approaches to design that are mainly based on the use of graphic diagrams with generative capabilities. On the other hand, it also attempts to clarify the methodological aspects of the insertion of graphic diagramming techniques within the broader field of architectural design processes. Using this conceptual framework, this article also analyzes three contemporary projects in which, supported by the use of digital technologies, graphic diagramming techniques play a critical role in the definition of spatial experiences at the urban scale[ES] Este artículo persigue, por una parte, determinar las características que definen aquellos modos de proyectar apoyados en el empleo de diagramas gráficos con cualidades generativas.

Generating single photons on demand in silicon is a challenge to the scalability of silicon-on-insulator integrated quantum photonic chips. While several defects acting as artificial atoms have recently demonstrated an ability to generate antibunched single photons, practical applications require tailoring of their emission through quantum cavity effects. In this work, we perform cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments with ensembles of artificial atoms embedded in silicon-on-insulator microresonators. The emitters under study, known as W color centers, are silicon tri-interstitial defects created upon self-ion implantation and thermal annealing. The resonators consist of circular Bragg grating cavities, designed for moderate Purcell enhancement (Fp=12.5F_p=12.5) and efficient luminescence extraction (ηcoll=40%\eta_{coll}=40\% for a numerical aperture of 0.26) for W centers located at the mode antinode. When the resonant frequency mode of the cavity is tuned with the zero-phonon transition of the emitters at 1218 nm, we observe a 20-fold enhancement of the zero-phonon line intensity, together with a two-fold decrease of the total relaxation time in time-resolved photoluminescence experiments. Based on finite-difference time-domain simulations, we propose a detailed theoretical analysis of Purcell enhancement for an ensemble of W centers, considering the overlap between the emitters and the resonant cavity mode. We obtain a good agreement with our experimental results assuming a quantum efficiency of 65±10%65 \pm 10 \% for the emitters in bulk silicon. Therefore, W centers open promising perspectives for the development of on-demand sources of single photons, harnessing cavity quantum electrodynamics in silicon photonic chips

Building capacities to improve the competitiveness of the agricultural sector of the Caribbean

    Get PDF
A regional public policy designed, jointly by all participating countries, and its implementation, by all participating institutions, to improve competitiveness of the regional agricultural sector, through the enhancement of the capacity of its labor force, while taking advantage of the existing diversified human resources of the region composed of the five participating countries. To implement such a policy, a set of instruments will be designed and put into practice. These include an information system, a set of courses for trainers to train the target population and a set of validated educational contents (courses) to upgrade and develop skills of the labor force devoted to agricultural activities in the region, skills that are required in a globalized environment

"A Prison within a Prison”?: Examining the enfolding spatialities of care and control in the Barlinnie Special Unit

    Get PDF
This paper uses one of Scotland's most controversial experiments in penal reform – the Barlinnie Special Unit – to examine the enfolding nature of care and control in carceral space. Connecting with recent arguments relating to “caring architecture” and using the framework of historical carceral geographies, it showcases the spatial complexities of implementing caring practices alongside reforming tactics. Beginning with a discussion of the care and control nexus within institutional spaces and its historical legacy, it considers the use of small units within the Scottish Prison System. Using the Barlinnie Special Unit as a pivot, the paper opens up the complex spatial arrangements and spatial tactics of experimental prison reform. It first examines the spatial and architectural dimensions of the Special Unit. Second, the paper focuses on issues of routine and inhabitation and the emotional uncertainty this generated for prisoners. Overall, this paper seeks to argue the importance of examining experimental spatial practices in prison reform history to highlight the interwoven spatialities of care and control in every‐day institutional life
