Marketing and Advertising Translation: Humans vs Machines in the field of cosmetics

This undergraduate thesis focuses on a very specific field of specialized translation: advertising and marketing translation. Indeed, the high degree of specialization involved in this activity provides a testing ground for a reconsideration of the importance of the human translator and a reformulation of their role. The constant development of new technologies creates ever more sophisticated translation programs, which in turn revives the long-standing machine vs human translation debate. The aim of this project is to conduct a practical exercise targeted at verifying whether specialization in translation always requires the supervision of humans equipped with the relevant linguistic knowledge and technical background, or whether, on the contrary, machine translation can at present provide valid enough results and a sufficient level of reliability.El presente Trabajo de Fin de Grado se centra en un campo muy concreto de la traducción especializada: la traducción para la publicidad y la mercadotecnia. De hecho, el alto grado de especialización que implica esta actividad proporciona un campo de pruebas para una reconsideración de la importancia del traductor humano y una reformulación de su papel. El desarrollo creciente e ininterrumpido de las nuevas tecnologías está produciendo programas de traducción cada vez más sofisticados, lo que a su vez reaviva el viejo debate que confronta la traducción humana y la traducción automática. A method of open cluster membership determination

A new method for the determination of open cluster membership based on a cumulative effect is proposed. In the field of a plate the relative x and y coordinate positions of each star with respect to all the other stars are added. The procedure is carried out for two epochs t_1 and t_2 separately, then one sum is subtracted from another. For a field star the differences in its relative coordinate positions of two epochs will be accumulated. For a cluster star, on the contrary, the changes in relative positions of cluster members at t_1 and t_2 will be very small. On the histogram of sums the cluster stars will gather to the left of the diagram, while the field stars will form a tail to the right. The procedure allows us to efficiently discriminate one group from another. The greater the distance between t_1 and t_2 and the more cluster stars present, the greater is the effect. The accumulation method does not require reference stars, determination of centroids and modelling the distribution of field stars, necessary in traditional methods. By the proposed method 240 open clusters have been processed, including stars up to m<13. The membership probabilities have been calculated and compared to those obtained by the most commonly used Vasilevskis-Sanders method. The similarity of the results acquired the two different approaches is satisfactory for the majority of clusters.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Family functioning, socio-economic status and adolescent’s depressive symptoms: the mediating role of hopelessness.

Research has shown that difficulties in family functioning contribute to developing adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Additionally, little research has been conducted in order to analyze socio-economic status (SES) differences in the relationship between family functioning and adolescent depressive symptoms. This study examined the relationships between the family variables included in the MacMaster Model of Family Functioning (MMFF), SES and depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating effects of hopelessness. Participants were 643 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (49% male) drawn from secondary schools in Málaga (Spain). They completed the Family Assessment Device, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and a socio-economic measure. We used conditional process analysis to test the moderation effect of gender and a dual mediation model with family functioning and hopelessness as mediators. Results showed that both family functioning as a whole and each MMFF variable, as well as SES, predicted adolescents’ depressive symptoms. In addition, gender moderated the relationship of roles assignment and behavioral control with adolescents’ depressive symptoms, which suggests the need for interventions directed to enhance family rules and boundaries, especially for boys. Finally, we found a serial mediational role of family functioning and hopelessness in the relationship between SES and depressive symptoms, suggesting that the effect of family SES on adolescents’ depressive symptoms through the development of hopelessness should also be targeted.Universidad de Málaga. Family functioning characteristics involved in adolescent depressive symptoms

Research has shown that family functioning contributes to depressive symptoms in adolescents, with a wide range of family functioning characteristics associated to adolescent depressive symptoms. However, these family attributes have been studied through different studies, methodologies and theoretical frameworks, and do not allow envisaging a single whole picture of the family attributes associated to adolescent depressive symptoms. The objective of this study was to overcome this deficit. We followed a systematic approach and used the Family Assessment Device (FAD), which comprehensively identify six family variables in which healthy and unhealthy families differ: Problem Solving (PS), Communication (CM), Roles (RL), Affective Responsiveness (AR), Affective Involvement (AI) and Behaviour Control (BC). Independent regression analyses conducted for each variable showed that all the FAD variables significantly predicted BDI scores. However, when the six variables were introduced simultaneously in the same equation to control for the shared explained variance, only AR and AI showed significant effects, with BC approaching significance. These results were confirmed through Prat measure, which showed that the non-overlapping effects of AR, AI and BC accounted for virtually the whole variance explained by the FAD dimensions. Conclusions at both methodological and applied levels emerge from these results. At a methodological level, these results prove the need for controlling the shared variance between family variables before deriving any conclusion about their role. At an applied level, they showed that the family affective aspects are the most important regarding adolescent depression, with only behaviour control playing a role within the non-affective variables.Universidad de Málaga. Los poemas transmiten un conjunto de reflexiones acerca de la interpretación del poeta sobre la belleza, la sabiduría, el romance y el mundo natural; en un estilo de elocuencia enaltecido por la franqueza y la brevedad de la palabra. Las visiones del pueblo, de la familia, de la infancia y la vejez, y de la vida y la muerte se entrelazan con profundas reflexiones cosmológicas. Así mismo, se destaca el resentimiento palpable hacia la Iglesia y los ladinos, pero se suaviza con gracia, ligereza y humor. Seated on the Bank of the Yichk’u River

The six poems included here are presented in Q’anjob’al Maya and in English, side by side for language comparison. Collectively, the poems convey reflections on the poet’s renderings of beauty, wisdom, romance, and the natural world; in a style of eloquence amplified by directness and brevity. Glimpses of village, family, childhood and old age, life and death, are interwoven with cosmological wisdoms. Palpable resentment toward the Church and ladinos are graciously tempered with lightness and humor. Ciutat Vella commercial areas: specialization, cloning and expulsion of the everyday life

El casco antiguo de Barcelona cuenta con un sistema comercial resultado de muchos siglos de evolución. La relación del sistema con su estructura urbana y el tipo de calle que le da soporte es profunda y ha dado lugar a áreas de concentración comercial muy intensas con un altísimo grado de especialización. Los nuevos modelos comerciales importados y la tematización turística sobre el tejido urbano tradicional han expulsado el comercio de proximidad, están transformando un paisaje urbano histórico y han modificado el precario equilibrio funcional del ámbito. ¿Es posible vivir con normalidad en el casco antiguo?A largely and historically extended commercial system is a characteristic of Barcelona’s historic center. Preparation and manipulation of free-standing oxides for photovoltaic applications.

Epitaxial complex oxides are of great interest for their rich chemical and physical properties, and their functionalities in a wide variety of technology areas. Among them, epitaxial ferroelectric BiFeO_3 has demonstrated huge potential as a new visible light absorber material, pointing the way towards the manufacture of highly efficient photovoltaic devices. However, preparation of complex epitaxial oxides has been essentially limited to specific substrates, hindering the integration of such materials into practical devices on which epitaxial growth cannot be achieved. Here we develop a new solution-based process to prepare Sr_3Al_2O_6 sacrificial layers that can be selectively removed by H_2O. Its feasibility is tested to exfoliate solution processed BiFeO_3 and atomic layer deposited Al_2O_3. By means of X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy, the films have been thoroughly characterized. Also, we performed a study on surface free energy and work of adhesion to transfer the active film to new surfaces, offering a novel platform to optimize the use of this sacrificial layer to freely manipulate complex oxides

De Nebrija al Brocense

Nebrija fue quien termina con el tradicional sistema medieval de la enseñanza del latín en España. Su método se basó en el estudio del uso del latín en los grandes escritores clásicos tradicionales. Para obtener dicha renovación, este profesor de la Universidad de Salamanca, no pudo encontrar suficientes obras gramaticales en España. Por otro lado, se analiza la figura del Brocense y su influencia en otros autores.Nebrija was who finishes with the traditional medieval system of the teaching of Latin in Spain. His method was based on the study of the usage of Latin in the great traditional classic writers. To obtain such renovation, this teacher of the University of Salamanca, could not find adequate grammatical works in Spain. On the other hand, is analyzed the Brocense and his influence on other writers
