    Background: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a physical condition that is now well established as a predictor of numerous adverse health outcomes, independent of physical activity levels. In order to be able to improve CRF at the population level and to develop effective interventions and public health programmes, it is important to understand why some people are more fit than others. Therefore, the primary aim of the systematic review described in this protocol is to examine individual and interpersonal factors that are correlated with or determine CRF among adults. Methods: The review will focus on quantitative studies that investigate any personal and interpersonal correlates and/or determinants of objectively measured CRF among the general, non-symptomatic, non-institutionalized adult population (aged 18–65 years) worldwide. The databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library will be searched to identify all relevant published journal articles, and Google Scholar and Scopus will be searched for grey literature. Studies where CRF is not an outcome variable and experimental studies where participants specifically receive a fitness intervention that increases CRF will be excluded. For each study, data extracted will include, among other variables, study characteristics, methodology for selecting participants into the study as well as the participants’ demographic characteristics, types of correlates and determinants of CRF investigated and their measurement methods, the objective measure of CRF used and its measurement method and validity, and the main reported results on the association between the correlates or determinants and CRF. In addition, observational studies will be assessed for methodological quality and risk of bias using a customized version of the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Experimental studies will be assessed using the 27-item Downs and Black “Checklist for Measuring Study Quality”. The final results will be presented as a narrative synthesis of the main findings of all included studies. Discussion: By consolidating and synthesizing the current research on possible individual and interpersonal correlates and determinants of CRF among adults worldwide, we aim to aid future public health actions, as well as identify gaps in our full understanding of what influences CRF

    Neuronal hemoglobin affects dopaminergic cells' response to stress

    Hemoglobin (Hb) is the major protein in erythrocytes and carries oxygen (O2) throughout the body. Recently, Hb has been found synthesized in atypical sites, including the brain. Hb is highly expressed in A9 dopaminergic (DA) neurons of the substantia nigra (SN), whose selective degeneration leads to Parkinson's disease (PD). Here we show that Hb confers DA cells' susceptibility to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP(+)) and rotenone, neurochemical cellular models of PD. The toxic property of Hb does not depend on O2 binding and is associated with insoluble aggregate formation in the nucleolus. Neurochemical stress induces epigenetic modifications, nucleolar alterations and autophagy inhibition that depend on Hb expression. When adeno-associated viruses carrying \u3b1- and \u3b2-chains of Hb are stereotaxically injected into mouse SN, Hb forms aggregates and causes motor learning impairment. These results position Hb as a potential player in DA cells' homeostasis and dysfunction in PD. Copyright The Author(s) 201

    Observation System for Analyzing Individual Boccia BC3

    Boccia is a Paralympic sport for athletes with locomotor dysfunction. The aim of this observational methodology study was to describe the design of an ad hoc observation instrument for analyzing individual boccia in the BC3 category (for athletes with severe functional impairment) and to show how it can be used in a practical setting to analyze technical and tactical aspects of the game. The observation instrument was designed based on the internal logic and rules of boccia and was then loaded into the Lince software program to create a simple coding tool. The content of the instrument was validated by a panel of experts with extensive experience in Paralympic boccia. The reliability of the resulting data was confirmed by analysis of interobserver agreement, with high kappa values obtained for all criteria. The practical application of the observation system was demonstrated by performing T-pattern analysis of two sample datasets, which revealed underlying behavioral patterns for isolated throws (synchronic) and successive throws (diachronic)

    A nonparametric approach for evaluating long-term energy policy scenarios: an application to the Greek energy system

    This paper by using the system of LEAP (Long range Energy Alternatives Planning System) constructs four different energy scenarios for the Greek transport, energy and industry sectors. By projecting the renewable energy use for the years 2020 and 2030 and the associated resulting carbon dioxide emissions, the paper constructs through nonparametric analysis efficiency measures evaluating the different energy policy which can be adopted. As a result it provides a quantitative measure of future policy performance under different energy consumption scenarios. The results reveal that the largest policy challenge for the Greek authorities will be the energy usage of the Greek industry since it is robust towards the adoption of renewable energy sources. It appears that under the four different policy scenarios the Greek industry sector will not be able to meet the environmental targets set by the Greek government. Finally, the analysis reveals that the targets for 2020 and 2030 can be met for the energy sector however for transport can only be met for the year 2030
