Conservative intellectuals, sociability and practices of immortality: the Brazilian Academy of Letters during the military dictatorship (1964-1979)
This article is part of a broader study about the Brazilian Academy of Letters under the military regime (1964-1979) and the behavior of its members during this period. The central question that guided this research was to determine to what extent this officially “apolitical” institution could serve as an agent of legitimization for the dictatorship. The aim of this paper is to look at politics through what I am referring to as “practices of immortality”. This study seeks to know whether the “House of Machado de Assis”, through its supposedly apolitical daily activities, contributed in some degree to legitimizing the regime implemented in 1964. The swearing in, the visits received by the academics and the way in which the official memory was established by the “immortals” are examined in this paper. The results reveal a close relation between the Brazilian Academy of Letters and the military dictatorship evidenced by the recruitment of its members and their social networks. They also show that the political, military, and cultural elites shared values that were remembered and praised at the events of the Brazilian Academy of Letters: good citizenship and patriotism; the idea of an “authentic culture” and a national identity based on a common language and on the Christian religion; as well as myths such as the cordiality of the Brazilian people and the absence of violence in the country’s history. Besides being a place where a conservative discourse was developed and where conservative men and ideas circulated, this cultural institution was associated to the military dictatorship and, consequently, to a supposedly “national” memory, culture, and identity by the “immortals”.Keywords: military dictatorship, Brazilian Academy of Letters, conservative intellectuals

An Incentive-Based Framework for Analyzing the Alignment of Institutional Interventions in the Public Primary Healthcare Sector: The Portuguese Case
Over the years, the Portuguese National Health Service has undergone several reforms to
face the challenges posed by internal and external factors on the access to and quality of its health
services. One of its most recent reforms addressed the primary healthcare sector, where understanding the incentives behind the actors of the inherent institutional interventions and how they are
aligned with the governing health policies is paramount for reformative success. With the purpose of
acknowledging the alignment of the primary healthcare sector’s institutional interventions from an
incentive-based perspective, we propose a framework resting on a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities, and Threats) analysis, which was built in cooperation with a panel of decision-making
actors from the Portuguese Ministry of Health. In the end, we derive possible policy implications and
strategies. This holistic approach highlighted the positive impact of the primary healthcare reform in
the upgrade of physical resources and human capital but stressed the geosocial asymmetries and the
lack of intra- and inter-sectorial coordination. The proposed framework serves also as a guideline for
future primary healthcare reforms, both national- and internationally.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Communication, to express our needs and ideas, is a fundamental piece of our
daily lives, enabling our interaction with others and contributing to establish social
bonds. When this ability is affected, whether by contextual issues (e.g.,
noisy environment) or intrinsic conditions (e.g., speech articulation difficulties)
it creates a challenging scenario for both the individuals and those surrounding
them. Children diagnosed with Austism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a
notable example of an audience facing these challenges given their frequent
difficulties to communicate and socially interact with others. In this context,
their challenges not only affect their ability to integrate with family and friends,
but can also influence how they perform at school, an important environment
for their development.
In recent years, efforts have been made to propose technological solutions
that contribute to support these children in their communication, but most of
the work in the literature mainly focuses on the child entailing a support that
does not truly addresses integration.
Considering this context, we argue that these challenges need to be addressed
considering the needs and motivations of children with ASD, but also
keeping in mind the motivations of those around them, helping parents, teachers
and friends to take part in the integration.
Profiting from previous work on the characterization of the needs and motivations
of children with ASD, their families, and teachers, the work carried out
explores different communication-related scenarios, at school and at home,
and proposes a set of requirements that should be considered to serve them.
Considering these requirements, and adopting an iterative user-centered design
approach, a first proof-of-concept application is proposed. AMICA, Adaptive
Multimodal Integrated Communication for All, is a multi-platform, multiuser
and multimodal application that aims to illustrate how some issues that
affect children with ASD and those surrounding them can be addressed in order
to their lives easier.
At its current stage, AMICA already encompasses support for several communication
features adapted to serve the child, family, friends, and teachers
providing them a space for interaction.
The modular multi-platform nature of the work carried out enables AMICA as a
testbed for further research on different multimodal ways of communication for
children with ASD (e.g., gaze or pictograms), but, also, by allowing the participation
of different users, it fosters first studies on the dynamic nature of such
communication.
proposta. AMICA, Adaptive Multimodal Integrated Communication for All, é
Predicting Lapse Rate in Life Insurance: An Exploration of Machine Learning Techniques
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Risk Analysis and ManagementThe implementation of machine learning techniques for the prediction of the lapse
rate in life insurance is investigated in this study. The lapse rate, which refers to the
rate of policy cancellations or expirations, plays a crucial role in the viability of life
insurance companies as they determine pricing strategies, manage risk, and plan for
the future.
Data was collected through a risk survey administered to policyholders, covering
their characteristics, policy details, and historical lapse patterns. A variety of machine
learning algorithms were then applied to the collected data to evaluate their
performance in predicting the lapse rate.
The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of machine learning methods
in forecasting the lapse rate in life insurance. The Extreme Gradient Boosting, C5:0,
and random f orest algorithms produced the best results when applied to the dataset.
Additionally, several key policy and customer characteristics were identified as having
significant predictive power in regards to the lapse rate.
However, the limitations of the study must be taken into consideration. Further
research is necessary to validate the results on larger and more diverse datasets and to
examine the practical applications of the models in the life insurance industry.
In conclusion, this study makes a contribution to the existing body of knowledge
on the use of machine learning in the insurance industry and holds the potential
to inform the development of more efficient risk management practices in the life
insurance sector.

Neurosurgical anatomy of the insular cortex
The purpose of this study was to clarify the morphology of the insular cortex focusing not only on the shape of the insula, but also on sulcal and gyral organization.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:
Sixty formalin-fixed adult brain hemispheres had their insula exposed and photographed. The dimensions of each gyrus and sulcus were measured using an image analysis software. The morphometric data obtained was statistically analysed.
RESULTS:
The insular cortex shape alternates between triangular and trapezoid, being the triangular shape the most common (75%). The angle between the posterior and inferior peri-insular sulcus in the trapezoid insulae had a mean range of 131.17 (SD = 12.277). A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 insular gyri were observed, being 5 the most common total number of gyri observed. The accessory gyrus was present in 66% of the insulae and well-developed in 38% of the cases. A statistical association between the number of gyri in the posterior lobe and the presence of a novel gyrus or a more developed accessory gyrus in the anterior lobe was found (P = 0.006). The posterior short gyrus was the longest of the short gyri (P < 0.001), followed by the anterior short gyrus (P < 0.001). The anterior long gyrus was the largest of the long gyri (P = 0.003). The contribution of each of the short gyri to the formation of the insular apex was inconstant. The most common observed apex arrangement was the combination of the anterior and of the middle short gyri.
CONCLUSIONS:
This study makes a strong contribution to the understanding of the insular cortex anatomy, allowing neurosurgeons to be more capable to decide the best approach to this cortical area
