    Reassessment of the conservation status of Crocidura fingui, a shrew endemic to PrĂ­ncipe Island, Gulf of Guinea

    The Fingui white-toothed shrew Crocidura fingui, categorized as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, is endemic to Príncipe Island, Central Africa. It is currently known from < 10 sites and its ecology and any threats are largely unknown. We review its distribution and ecology, and any potential threats, based on camera-trap data, field observations and previously published and unpublished sightings. Crocidura fingui appears to have an island-wide distribution and to use a range of ecosystems, from native forests to urban areas. It is largely nocturnal and exhibits considerable spatiotemporal overlap with introduced mammals such as the African civet Civettictis civetta, domestic cat Felis catus and rats Rattus spp. The species has an area of occupancy < 500 km2 and is known from fewer than five locations, and its population is inferred to be affected by several introduced mammals. We recommend that it is recategorized as Endangered on the IUCN Red List

    A tool to support the creation of datasets of tampered videos

    Digital Video Forensics is getting a growing interest from the Multimedia research community, as the need for methods to validate the authenticity of a video content is increasing with the number of videos freely available to the digital users. Unlike Digital Image Forensics, to our knowledge, there are not standard datasets to test video forgery detection techniques. In this paper we present a new tool to support the users in creating datasets of tampered videos. We furthermore present our own dataset and we discuss some remarks about how to create forgeries difficult to be detected by an observer, to the naked eye

    Magnetic behavior of Ni nanoparticles with high disordered atomic structure

    This report concerns the magnetic properties of colloidal Ni nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by chemical reduction of Ni(II) salt in an organic solvent. The NPs present a complex and disordered atomic structure, where small clusters of a few Ni atoms appear to coexist within each NP. These NPs exhibit interesting magnetic properties, with a low temperature ferromagnetic order followed by a transition from ferromagnetic to a 'spin-glass-like' state as the temperature decreases. The results are discussed considering the role of the atomic ordering of the NPs on the corresponding magnetic behavior. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.921
