    The present work explores improvements in group decision-making. It begins with a practical example using state-of-the-art techniques for a complex, high-risk decision. We show how these techniques can reveal a better alternative. Although we created an improved decision process, decision-makers were apt to protect their own organizations instead of the project. This tendency was reduced over the course of the decision-making process but inspired the first conceptual component of this work. The first concept describes the “Cost of Conflict” that can arise in a group decision, using game theory to represent the non-cooperative approach and comparing the outcome to the cooperative approach. We demonstrate that it is possible for the group to settle on a non-Paretto Nash equilibrium. The sensitivity of the decision-maker weights is revealed which led to the second conceptual portion of this work. The second concept applies social network theory to study the influence between decision-makers in a group decision. By examining the number and strength of connections between decision-makers, we build from intrinsically derived weights to extrinsically derived weights by adding the network influences from other decision-makers. The two conceptual approaches provide a descriptive view of non-cooperative decisions where decision-makers still influence each other. These concepts suggest a prescriptive approach to achieving a higher group utility

    Effect of cooperative learning (student teams -achievement divisions) on African American and Caucasian students\u27 interracial friendships

    The purpose of this study was to gauge the impact of cooperative learning teams on interracial friendships. The participants were 256 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in English classes (20% African American and 80% Caucasian) at a rural middle school in Louisiana. After delivery of instruction, the experimental group studied worksheets in teams, received rewards based upon the team\u27s performance, and received individual grades based upon individual exam scores. The control group studied worksheets individually and received individual grades. This eight week study utilized the sociometric question, “Who are your friends in this class?” as the pretest and posttest instrument. The data were analyzed using dependent and independent samples t-tests. Cooperative learning did increase close cross-race friendships, although not significantly. However, results indicated that cooperative learning significantly (p=.001) increased the number of strong cross-race friendships. It was also determined that there was no significant difference in the impact of cooperative learning on African American and Caucasian students\u27 interracial friendships

    Disentangling pre- and postnatal maternal age effects on offspring performance in an insect with elaborate maternal care

    Maternal effect senescence has attracted much recent scientific interest. However, the age-related effects of pre- and postnatal maternal age are often conflated, as these naturally originate from the same individual. Additionally, many maternal effect senescence studies fail to account for potential biases associated with selective disappearance. Here we use a cross-fostered laboratory population of a burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides, to examine both the effects of female pre- and postnatal maternal age on offspring life-history traits and the postcare outcomes of mothers while accounting for selective disappearance of postnatal caregivers. Neither pre- nor postnatal maternal age affected offspring longevity or larval weight at hatching, and postnatal age had no effect on postcare maternal outcomes except to confirm the presence of actuarial senescence. There was weak evidence for concave relationships between two larval traits (dispersal weight and survival) and the age of egg producers. Selective disappearance of caregivers had no clear effect on any of the measured offspring traits. Contrary to predictions from evolutionary theory, maternal effect senescence and reproductive effort increases do not always manifest, and current theory may be insufficient to account for the true diversity of aging patterns relating to maternal care

    Transiently Transfected Purine Biosynthetic Enzymes Form Stress Bodies

    It has been hypothesized that components of enzymatic pathways might organize into intracellular assemblies to improve their catalytic efficiency or lead to coordinate regulation. Accordingly, de novo purine biosynthesis enzymes may form a purinosome in the absence of purines, and a punctate intracellular body has been identified as the purinosome. We investigated the mechanism by which human de novo purine biosynthetic enzymes might be organized into purinosomes, especially under differing cellular conditions. Irregardless of the activity of bodies formed by endogenous enzymes, we demonstrate that intracellular bodies formed by transiently transfected, fluorescently tagged human purine biosynthesis proteins are best explained as protein aggregation.This work was supported by grants from the United States National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Welch (F1515) and Packard Foundations to EMM.     Impact of a Right Ventricular Impedance Sensor on the Cardiovascular Responses to Exercise in Pacemaker Dependent Patients

    Background. The evaluation of the heart rate (HR) response to exercise is important for the assessment of the rate response algorithm of sensor-controlled pacemakers. This study examined the effects of a right ventricular impedance sensor driven pacemaker on the cardiovascular responses to incremental exercise in pacemaker dependent patients. Methods. Twelve patients (70.5 ± 9.5 years; 5 Females: 7 Males) implanted with an Inos2+ closed loop stimulation (CLS) pacemaker were compared to 12 healthy age and sex matched controls (70.6 ± 4.8 years). All subjects performed the chronotropic assessment exercise protocol (CAEP). Variables of interest included HR, cardiac output (Q), oxygen uptake (Vo2) and blood pressure (BP). Data were analyzed at rest, throughout exercise and during recovery. Furthermore, patient chronotropic responses were compared to a reference chronotropic response slope for aerobic exercise. Results. There were no differences between groups for HR or Q. response throughout exercise. At peak exercise, V.o2 (mL.kg-1.min-1) was higher for the controls (p < 0.05). The patient chronotropic response slope was comparable to the CAEP reference slope from rest to both the anaerobic threshold (AT) and peak exercise. During recovery, no differences were observed between the groups for any parameters or for the HR decay slopes. Conclusions. Up to the anaerobic threshold, the right ventricular impedance sensor driven pacemaker delivered a pacing rate that contributed to an overall cardiovascular response similar to that observed in healthy age matched subjects
