    Preliminary report on allelic variation of Th2R and Th3R region of the circumsporozoite protein of plasmodium falciparum from Kokap Yogyakarta Province Indonesia

    Allelic variation on the Th2R and Th3R non-repetitive epitope regions of the Circumsporozoit Protein (CSP) is a well known phenomenon among Plasmodium falciparum population within different regions or geographical situations. However, such information originated from Indonesian plasmodium population is still not available. Studies have been initiated on Indonesian Plasmodium populations, aiming to identify the sequence variation of the gene encoding Th2R and Th3R epitope region of the CSP molecules of P. falciparum from malaria endemic areas of Indonesia. At the initial stage of these studies P. falciparum infected blood had been collected from patients living in endemic areas of Kokap district, Yogyakarta Province, Indonesia. Genomic DNA were isolated from microscopically positive samples and the gene encoding non-repetitive T cell epitope region of the CSP molecules were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using primers designed based on conserved regions of published sequences. The DNA PCR amplification products were purified and sequenced directly using ABI Prism 377 type Automatic DNA Sequencer, and the allelic type of the Th2R and Th3R epitopes were analyzed. The parallel PCR products were also dotted onto replicate nylon membranes and the Th2R and Th3R epitopes were typed using Sequence Specific Oligonucleotide Probes. The results indicated that from 18 samples which were successfully sequenced the Th2R epitope types were all Th2R*05 (100%), whiles on the Th3R locus 72.2% were Th3R*01and 27.8% were Th3R*04. If these data combined with sequences from other countries, it seems that P. falciparum from Indonesian isolates is more closely related to PNG and Thailand rather than to Gambia and Brazil populations.     Effect of two different house screening interventions on exposure to malaria vectors and on anaemia in children in The Gambia: a randomised controlled trial

    Background: House screening should protect people against malaria. We assessed whether two types of house screening—full screening of windows, doors, and closing eaves, or installation of screened ceilings—could reduce house entry of malaria vectors and frequency of anaemia in children in an area of seasonal malaria transmission. Methods: During 2006 and 2007, 500 occupied houses in and near Farafenni town in The Gambia, an area with low use of insecticide-treated bednets, were randomly assigned to receive full screening, screened ceilings, or no screening (control). Randomisation was done by computer-generated list, in permuted blocks of five houses in the ratio 2:2:1. Screening was not treated with insecticide. Exposure to mosquitoes indoors was assessed by fortnightly light trap collections during the transmission season. Primary endpoints included the number of female Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes collected per trap per night. Secondary endpoints included frequency of anaemia (haemoglobin concentration <80 g/L) and parasitaemia at the end of the transmission season in children (aged 6 months to 10 years) who were living in the study houses. Analysis was by modified intention to treat (ITT), including all randomised houses for which there were some outcome data and all children from those houses who were sampled for haemoglobin and parasitaemia. This study is registered as an International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial, number ISRCTN51184253. Findings: 462 houses were included in the modified ITT analysis (full screening, n=188; screened ceilings, n=178; control, n=96). The mean number of A gambiae caught in houses without screening was 37·5 per trap per night (95% CI 31·6–43·3), compared with 15·2 (12·9–17·4) in houses with full screening (ratio of means 0·41, 95% CI 0·31–0·54; p<0·0001) and 19·1 (16·1–22·1) in houses with screened ceilings (ratio 0·53, 0·40–0·70; p<0·0001). 755 children completed the study, of whom 731 had complete clinical and covariate data and were used in the analysis of clinical outcomes. 30 (19%) of 158 children from control houses had anaemia, compared with 38 (12%) of 309 from houses with full screening (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·53, 95% CI 0·29–0·97; p=0·04), and 31 (12%) of 264 from houses with screened ceilings (OR 0·51, 0·27–0·96; p=0·04). Frequency of parasitaemia did not differ between intervention and control groups. Interpretation: House screening substantially reduced the number of mosquitoes inside houses and could contribute to prevention of anaemia in children

    Discovery and Measurement of Sleptons, Binos, and Winos with a Z'

    Extensions of the MSSM could significantly alter its phenomenology at the LHC. We study the case in which the MSSM is extended by an additional U(1) gauge symmetry, which is spontaneously broken at a few TeV. The production cross-section of sleptons is enhanced over that of the MSSM by the process ppZ~~pp\to Z' \to \tilde{\ell} \tilde{\ell}^*, so the discovery potential for sleptons is greatly increased. The flavor and charge information in the resulting decay, ~+LSP\tilde{\ell} \to \ell + {LSP}, provides a useful handle on the identity of the LSP. With the help of the additional kinematical constraint of an on-shell Z', we implement a novel method to measure all of the superpartner masses involved in this channel. For certain final states with two invisible particles, one can construct kinematic observables bounded above by parent particle masses. We demonstrate how output from one such observable, m_T2, can become input to a second, increasing the number of measurements one can make with a single decay chain. The method presented here represents a new class of observables which could have a much wider range of applicability.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures; v2 references added and minor change

    Percolation and epidemics in a two-dimensional small world

    Percolation on two-dimensional small-world networks has been proposed as a model for the spread of plant diseases. In this paper we give an analytic solution of this model using a combination of generating function methods and high-order series expansion. Our solution gives accurate predictions for quantities such as the position of the percolation threshold and the typical size of disease outbreaks as a function of the density of "shortcuts" in the small-world network. Our results agree with scaling hypotheses and numerical simulations for the same model.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 2 table

    P Cygni Profiles of Molecular Lines Toward Arp 220 Nuclei

    We report ~100 pc (0farcs3) resolution observations of (sub)millimeter HCO+ and CO lines in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. The lines peak at two merger nuclei, with HCO+ being more spatially concentrated than CO. Asymmetric line profiles with blueshifted absorption and redshifted emission are discovered in HCO+(3-2) and (4-3) toward the two nuclei and in CO(3-2) toward one nucleus. We suggest that these P Cygni profiles are due to ~100 km s–1 outward motion of molecular gas from the nuclei. This gas is most likely outflowing from the inner regions of the two nuclear disks rotating around individual nuclei, clearing the shroud around the luminosity sources there

    We study possible restrictions on the structure of curvature corrections to gravitational theories in the context of their corresponding Kac--Moody algebras, following the initial work on E10 in Class. Quant. Grav. 22 (2005) 2849. We first emphasize that the leading quantum corrections of M-theory can be naturally interpreted in terms of (non-gravity) fundamental weights of E10. We then heuristically explore the extent to which this remark can be generalized to all over-extended algebras by determining which curvature corrections are compatible with their weight structure, and by comparing these curvature terms with known results on the quantum corrections for the corresponding gravitational theories.Comment: 27 page

    The position of graptolites within Lower Palaeozoic planktic ecosystems.

    An integrated approach has been used to assess the palaeoecology of graptolites both as a discrete group and also as a part of the biota present within Ordovician and Silurian planktic realms. Study of the functional morphology of graptolites and comparisons with recent ecological analogues demonstrates that graptolites most probably filled a variety of niches as primary consumers, with modes of life related to the colony morphotype. Graptolite coloniality was extremely ordered, lacking any close morphological analogues in Recent faunas. To obtain maximum functional efficiency, graptolites would have needed varying degrees of coordinated automobility. A change in lifestyle related to ontogenetic changes was prevalent within many graptolite groups. Differing lifestyle was reflected by differing reproductive strategies, with synrhabdosomes most likely being a method for rapid asexual reproduction. Direct evidence in the form of graptolithophage 'coprolitic' bodies, as well as indirect evidence in the form of probable defensive adaptations, indicate that graptolites comprised a food item for a variety of predators. Graptolites were also hosts to a variety of parasitic organisms and provided an important nutrient source for scavenging organisms

    Lyapunov spectrum of asymptotically sub-additive potentials

    For general asymptotically sub-additive potentials (resp. asymptotically additive potentials) on general topological dynamical systems, we establish some variational relations between the topological entropy of the level sets of Lyapunov exponents, measure-theoretic entropies and topological pressures in this general situation. Most of our results are obtained without the assumption of the existence of unique equilibrium measures or the differentiability of pressure functions. Some examples are constructed to illustrate the irregularity and the complexity of multifractal behaviors in the sub-additive case and in the case that the entropy map that is not upper-semi continuous.Comment: 44 page
