    Exchange-correlation potential for Current Density Functional Theory of frequency dependent linear response

    The dynamical, long-wavelength longitudinal and transverse exchange-correlation potentials for a homogeneous electron gas are evaluated in a microscopic model based on an approximate decoupling of the equation of motion for the current-current response function. The transverse spectrum turns out to be very similar to the longitudinal one. We obtain evidence for a strong spectral structure near twice the plasma frequency due to a two-plasmon threshold for two-pair excitations, which may be observable in inelastic scattering experiments. Our results give the entire input needed to implement the Time-Dependent Current Density Functional Theory scheme recently developed by G. Vignale and W. Kohn [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 2037 (1996)] and are fitted to analytic functions to facilitate such applications.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    Molecular Basis for poly(A) RNP Architecture and Recognition by the Pan2-Pan3 Deadenylase

    The stability of eukaryotic mRNAs is dependent on a ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex of poly(A)-binding proteins (PABPC1/Pab1) organized on the poly(A) tail. This poly(A) RNP not only protects mRNAs from premature degradation but also stimulates the Pan2-Pan3 deadenylase complex to catalyze the first step of poly(A) tail shortening. We reconstituted this process in vitro using recombinant proteins and show that Pan2-Pan3 associates with and degrades poly(A) RNPs containing two or more Pab1 molecules. The cryo-EM structure of Pan2-Pan3 in complex with a poly(A) RNP composed of 90 adenosines and three Pab1 protomers shows how the oligomerization interfaces of Pab1 are recognized by conserved features of the deadenylase and thread the poly(A) RNA substrate into the nuclease active site. The structure reveals the basis for the periodic repeating architecture at the 3' end of cytoplasmic mRNAs. This illustrates mechanistically how RNA-bound Pab1 oligomers act as rulers for poly(A) tail length over the mRNAs' lifetime.We would like to thank ... the MPIB cryo-EM, and core facilities ..

    Transverse-momentum distributions in a diquark spectator model

    All the leading-twist parton distribution functions are calculated in a spectator model of the nucleon, using scalar and axial-vector diquarks. Single gluon rescattering is used to generate T-odd distribution functions. Different choices for the diquark polarization states are considered, as well as a few options for the form factor at the nucleon-quark-diquark vertex. The results are listed in analytic form and interpreted in terms of light-cone wave functions. The model parameters are fixed by reproducing the phenomenological parametrization of unpolarized and helicity parton distributions at the lowest available scale.     The Economic Costs of Child Maltreatment in UK

    Child maltreatment is a major public health problem with significant consequences for individual victims and for society. In this paper we quantify for the first time the economic costs of fatal and non-fatal child maltreatment in the UK in relation to several short-, medium- and long-term outcomes ranging from physical and mental health problems, to labour market outcomes and welfare use. We combine novel regression analysis of rich data from the National Child Development Study and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing with secondary evidence to produce an incidence-based estimate of the lifetime costs of child maltreatment from a societal perspective. The discounted average lifetime incidence cost of non-fatal child maltreatment by a primary caregiver is estimated at £89,390 (95% uncertainty interval £44,896 to £145,508); the largest contributors to this are costs from social care, short-term health and long-term labour market outcomes. The discounted lifetime cost per death from child maltreatment is estimated at £940,758, comprising health care and lost productivity costs. Our estimates provide the first comprehensive benchmark to quantify the costs of child maltreatment in the UK and the benefits of interventions aimed at reducing or preventing it

    Effectiveness of Different Sample Treatments for the Elemental Characterization of Bees and Beehive Products

    Bee health and beehive products’ quality are compromised by complex interactions between multiple stressors, among which toxic elements play an important role. The aim of this study is to optimize and validate sensible and reliable analytical methods for biomonitoring studies and the quality control of beehive products. Four digestion procedures, including two systems (microwave oven and water bath) and different mixture reagents, were evaluated for the determination of the total content of 40 elements in bees and five beehive products (beeswax, honey, pollen, propolis and royal jelly) by using inductively coupled plasma mass and optical emission spectrometry. Method validation was performed by measuring a standard reference material and the recoveries for each selected matrix. The water bath-assisted digestion of bees and beehive products is proposed as a fast alternative to microwave-assisted digestion for all elements in biomonitoring studies. The present study highlights the possible drawbacks that may be encountered during the elemental analysis of these biological matrices and aims to be a valuable aid for the analytical chemist.     Time-dependent density functional theory beyond the adiabatic local density approximation

    In the current density functional theory of linear and nonlinear time-dependent phenomena, the treatment of exchange and correlation beyond the level of the adiabatic local density approximation is shown to lead to the appearance of viscoelastic stresses in the electron fluid. Complex and frequency-dependent viscosity/elasticity coefficients are microscopically derived and expressed in terms of properties of the homogeneous electron gas. As a first consequence of this formalism, we provide an explicit formula for the linewidths of collective excitations in electronic systems.Comment: RevTeX, 4 page

    Wideband dual sphere detector of gravitational waves

    We present the concept of a sensitive AND broadband resonant mass gravitational wave detector. A massive sphere is suspended inside a second hollow one. Short, high-finesse Fabry-Perot optical cavities read out the differential displacements of the two spheres as their quadrupole modes are excited. At cryogenic temperatures one approaches the Standard Quantum Limit for broadband operation with reasonable choices for the cavity finesses and the intracavity light power. A molybdenum detector of overall size of 2 m, would reach spectral strain sensitivities of 2x10^-23/Sqrt{Hz} between 1000 Hz and 3000 Hz.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Changed content.     Structural insights into the interaction of the nuclear exosome helicase Mtr4 with the preribosomal protein Nop53

    The nuclear exosome and the associated RNA helicase Mtr4 participate in the processing of several ribonucleoprotein particles (RNP), including the maturation of the large ribosomal subunit (60S). S. cerevisiae Mtr4 interacts directly with Nop53, a ribosomal biogenesis factor present in late pre-60S particles containing precursors of the 5.8S rRNA. The Mtr4-Nop53 interaction plays a pivotal role in the maturation of the 5.8S rRNA, providing a physical link between the nuclear exosome and the pre-60S RNP. An analogous interaction between Mtr4 and another ribosome biogenesis factor, Utp18, directs the exosome to an earlier preribosomal particle. Nop53 and Utp18 contain a similar Mtr4-binding motif known as the arch-interacting motif (AIM). Here, we report the 3.2 angstrom resolution crystal structure of S. cerevisiae Mtr4 bound to the interacting region of Nop53, revealing how the KOW domain of the helicase recognizes the AIM sequence of Nop53 with a network of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The AIM-interacting residues are conserved in Mtr4 and are not present in the related cytoplasmic helicase Ski2, rationalizing the specificity and versatility of Mtr4 in the recognition of different AIM-containing proteins. Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we show that the KOW domain of Mtr4 can simultaneously bind an AIM-containing protein and a structured RNA at adjacent surfaces, suggesting how it can dock onto RNPs. The KOW domains of exosome-associated helicases thus appear to have evolved from the KOW domains of ribosomal proteins and to function as RNP-binding modules in the context of the nuclear exosome

    Strategy for the development of a new stick formula without microplastics

    Plastic is a synthetic, malleable, and durable material that has been used for various applications since its invention in the late 19th century. During its very long-time degradation process, mechanical and/or photochemical processes fragment plastic into increasingly smaller fragments called microplastics (MPs). In the cosmetic field, MPs are directly added to many products for various functions, including to exploit their exfoliating and structuring power. Unfortunately, it has been realized that MPs are not retained in purification plants and therefore end up in the aquatic environment causing a high problem of environmental pollution. Polyethene (PE) is the most widely used MP in cosmetics due to its use as a structuring agent, to provide consistency to formulations and as a key ingredient in lipsticks and mascaras. Given the limitations imposed by regulations and the growing demand from consumers for chemical-free and eco-friendly products, the common synthetic and petroleum-based waxes used in lipstick formulations, such as PE, must necessarily be replaced by natural waxes of plant origin. In this paper we report the development of a chemical-free and eco-friendly cosmetic stick. To achieve the goal, it was necessary to study the compatibility of the ABWAX® Revowax, natural alternative to PE, with oils and colours to predict the behaviour of these structuring waxes in more complex systems. Through a systematic comparative study, the two waxes showed similar thermal characteristics and showed similar penetration curves, presenting overall comparable performance in the MP-free finished product. We can therefore consider ABWAX® Revowax natural wax a valid alternative to PE
