    Psychological support for ex-military families

    There is a complex interaction between familial functioning and veteran mental health, with familial relationships often being affected. Family therapy is not routinely recommended or offered for veterans in the UK. This study used a narrative approach to explore the experiences of veterans and spouses having received family therapy. Specifically, this study aimed to explore what stories individuals in an ex-military family would tell of their experience of family therapy, what narrative themes occurred and what the perceived impact on familial relationships was following family therapy. Individual narrative interviews were conducted with four veterans and five spouses. Individual interviews were followed by joint couple interviews with two couples. Main findings suggested that typically veterans would tell a ‘romance’ story while spouses were more likely to tell a ‘tragedy’ or ‘epic’ story. Narrative themes occurring from veterans, spouses and couples included: family therapy helpful, lack of support, changes in veteran, impact of difficulties on family relationships and military culture and transitioning. Finally the study found that family therapy had positively impacted familial relationships, particularly highlighting improvements in couple communication and shared or alternative perspectives to be important. Limitations, clinical implications and future directions are discussed

    Intensity dependences of the nonlinear optical excitation of plasmons in graphene

    Recently, we demonstrated an all-optical coupling scheme for plasmons, which takes advantage of the intrinsic nonlinear optical response of graphene. Frequency mixing using free-space, visible light pulses generates surface plasmons in a planar graphene sample, where the phase matching condition can define both the wavevector and energy of surface waves and intraband transitions. Here, we also show that the plasmon generation process is strongly intensity-dependent, with resonance features washed out for absorbed pulse fluences greater than 0.1 J m−2. This implies a subtle interplay between the nonlinear generation process and sample heating. We discuss these effects in terms of a non-equilibrium charge distribution using a two-temperature model.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Polymerized LB films imaged with a combined atomic force microscope-fluorescence microscope

    The first results obtained with a new stand-alone atomic force microscope (AFM) integrated with a standard Zeiss optical fluorescence microscope are presented. The optical microscope allows location and selection of objects to be imaged with the high-resolution AFM. Furthermore, the combined microscope enables a direct comparison between features observed in the fluorescence microscope and those observed in the images obtained with the AFM, in air or under liquid. The cracks in polymerized Langmuir-Blodgett films of lO,l2-pentacosadiynoic acid as observed in the fluorescence microscope run parallel to one of the lattice directions of the crystal as revealed by molecular resolution images obtained with the AFM. The orientation of these cracks also coincides with the polarization direction of the fluorescent light, indicating that the cracks run along the polymer backbone. Ripple-like corrugations on a submicrometer scale have been observed, which may be due to mechanical stress created during the polymerization process

    The Roles of Substrate vs Nonlocal Optical Nonlinearities in the Excitation of Surface Plasmons in Graphene

    It has recently been demonstrated that difference frequency mixing (DFM) can generate surface plasmons in graphene [1]. Here, we present detailed calculations comparing the contributions to this effect from substrate and from graphene nonlinearities. Our calculations show that the substrate (quartz) nonlinearity gives rise to a surface plasmon intensity that is around twelve orders of magnitude smaller than that arising from the intrinsic graphene response. This surprisingly efficient intrinsic process, given the centrosymmetric structure of graphene, arises almost entirely due to non-local contributions to the second order optical nonlinearity of graphene

    Temperature-driven selection on metabolic traits increases the strength of an algal-grazer interaction in naturally warmed streams

As the metabolism and consumption rates of ectotherms increase sharply with temperature, there are major concerns that global warming will increase the strength of trophic interactions, destabilizing food webs, and altering ecosystem structure and function. We used geothermally warmed streams that span an 11°C temperature gradient to investigate the interplay between temperature-driven selection on traits related to metabolism and resource acquisition, and the interaction strength between the keystone gastropod grazer, Radix balthica, and a common algal resource. Populations from a warm stream (~28°C) had higher maximal metabolic rates and optimal temperatures than their counterparts from a cold stream (~17°C). We found that metabolic rates of the population originating from the warmer stream were higher across all measurement temperatures. A reciprocal transplant experiment demonstrated that the interaction strengths between the grazer and its algal resource were highest for both populations when transplanted into the warm stream. In line with the thermal dependence of respiration, interaction strengths involving grazers from the warm stream were always higher than those with grazers from the cold stream. These results imply that increases in metabolism and resource consumption mediated by the direct, thermodynamic effects of higher temperatures on physiological rates are not mitigated by metabolic compensation in the long-term, and suggest that warming will increase the strength of algal-grazer interactions with likely knock-on effects for the biodiversity and productivity of aquatic ecosystems.     Laminin enhances the growth of human neural stem cells in defined culture media

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human neural stem cells (hNSC) have the potential to provide novel cell-based therapies for neurodegenerative conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. In order to realise this goal, protocols need to be developed that allow for large quantities of hNSC to be cultured efficiently. As such, it is important to identify factors which enhance the growth of hNSC. <it>In vivo</it>, stem cells reside in distinct microenvironments or niches that are responsible for the maintenance of stem cell populations. A common feature of niches is the presence of the extracellular matrix molecule, laminin. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of exogenous laminin on hNSC growth.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To measure hNSC growth, we established culture conditions using B27-supplemented medium that enable neurospheres to grow from human neural cells plated at clonal densities. Limiting dilution assays confirmed that neurospheres were derived from single cells at these densities. Laminin was found to increase hNSC numbers as measured by this neurosphere formation. The effect of laminin was to augment the proliferation/survival of the hNSC, rather than promoting the undifferentiated state. In agreement, apoptosis was reduced in dissociated neurospheres by laminin in an integrin β1-dependent manner.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The addition of laminin to the culture medium enhances the growth of hNSC, and may therefore aid their large-scale production.</p
