The data for the third quarter of 1978 is presented in this paper. The statewise and monthwise details of catch during the months of the quarter and the total catch of prawns for the quarter are summarized. Gearwise analysis of the catch, show that the prawn catch by shrimp trawlers increased from that of the previous quarter. In Kerala the trend of more prawn catch when the environmental features registered decrease in values noticed towards the end of last quarter continued in this quarter. The details of the fishery for the last quarter of the year is dealt with first and then a general picture of the fishery for the whole year presented in this paper. The total catch figures for the previous quarters given earlier were provisional, whereas the final figures are used for the study of the fishery of the last quarter as well as the annual picture

During the year 1980 the total marine prawn production was estimated at 1,70,737 tonnes against 1,77,582 t in the previous year (table 1), showing a decrease of 6^45 t (3.85%). A comparative study of the production over the past few years indicates that the trend of slight decrease from the maximum in 1975 is maintained over these years. The decrease this year is mostly brought about by reduced catches in Maharashtra stat

World fisheries statistics shows that India has reached the top rank in prawn production in 1973 and ever since ,this is being kept up. The trend in the prawn production over the past decade and a half shows that there has been steady increase of total landing up to 1973. The data from Cochin and Neendakara, two important landing centres for prawns in Kerala has been pooled together and presented. Data from another centre in kerala namely, Calicut also is given

The total marine prawn production during the year 1979 was estimated at 1, 77,582 tonnes, showing a decrease of only 2,274 t. (1.3%) from the total production of 1, 79,856 t in 1978. A study of the production trend over the past few years shows the maximum of 2,20,7511 in 1975 and thereafter a gradual reduction with a slight increase in 1978. The production being contributed mostly by penaeid prawns. The total monthly landings of prawns remained high from January to May with a sudden decline to the minimum of 5,571 t. in June. P. indicus was the major constituent of the prawn fishery amounting to 63,3% of the total prawn catches, followed by P. merguiensis (21,8%) and M. affinis (14.1 %). The landings of other species viz., P. monodon (0.4%), M. dobsoni (0.4%) and M. lysianassa (0.04%) were negligibl
