Far From Threshold Buckling Analysis of Thin Films
Thin films buckle easily and form wrinkled states in regions of well defined
size. The extent of a wrinkled region is typically assumed to reflect the zone
of in-plane compressive stresses prior to buckling, but recent experiments on
ultrathin sheets have shown that wrinkling patterns are significantly longer
and follow different scaling laws than those predicted by standard buckling
theory. Here we focus on a simple setup to show the striking differences
between near-threshold buckling and the analysis of wrinkle patterns in very
thin films, which are typically far from threshold.Comment: 4 page

Capillary deformations of bendable films
We address the partial wetting of liquid drops on ultrathin solid sheets resting on a deformable foundation. Considering the membrane limit of sheets that can relax compression through wrinkling at negligible energetic cost, we revisit the classical theory for the contact of liquid drops on solids. Our calculations and experiments show that the liquid-solid-vapor contact angle is modified from the Young angle, even though the elastic bulk modulus (E) of the sheet is so large that the ratio between the surface tension γ and E is of molecular size. This finding establishes a new type of “soft capillarity” that stems from the bendability of thin elastic bodies rather than from material softness. We also show that the size of the wrinkle pattern that emerges in the sheet is fully predictable, thus resolving a puzzle noticed in several previous attempts to model “drop-on-a-floating-sheet” experiments, and enabling a reliable usage of this setup for the metrology of ultrathin films
Measuring Dislocation Density in Aluminum with Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy
Dislocations in a material will, when present in enough numbers, change the
speed of propagation of elastic waves. Consequently, two material samples,
differing only in dislocation density, will have different elastic constants, a
quantity that can be measured using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy.
Measurements of this effect on aluminum samples are reported. They compare well

Bis(aryl) Tetrasulfides as Cathode Materials for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries
An organotetrasulfide consists of a linear chain of four sulfur atoms that could accept up to 6 e− in reduction reactions, thus providing a promising high-capacity electrode material. Herein, we study three bis(aryl) tetrasulfides as cathode materials in lithium batteries. Each tetrasulfide exhibits two major voltage regions in the discharge. The high voltage slope region is governed by the formation of persulfides and thiolates, and the low voltage plateau region is due to the formation of Li2S2/Li2S. Based on theoretical calculations and spectroscopic analysis, three reduction reaction processes are revealed, and the discharge products are identified. Lithium half cells with tetrasulfide catholytes deliver high specific capacities over 200 cycles. The effects of the functional groups on the electrochemical characteristics of tetrasulfides are investigated, which provides guidance for developing optimum aryl polysulfides as cathode materials for high energy lithium batteries
Anomalous strength of membranes with elastic ridges
We report on a simulational study of the compression and buckling of elastic
ridges formed by joining the boundary of a flat sheet to itself. Such ridges
store energy anomalously: their resting energy scales as the linear size of the
sheet to the 1/3 power. We find that the energy required to buckle such a ridge
is a fixed multiple of the resting energy. Thus thin sheets with elastic ridges
such as crumpled sheets are qualitatively stronger than smoothly bent sheets.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, 3 figure
On the Quasi-Periodic Oscillations of Magnetars
We study torsional Alfv\'en oscillations of magnetars, i.e., neutron stars
with a strong magnetic field. We consider the poloidal and toroidal components
of the magnetic field and a wide range of equilibrium stellar models. We use a
new coordinate system (X,Y), where ,
and is the radial component of the magnetic
field. In this coordinate system, the 1+2-dimensional evolution equation
describing the quasi-periodic oscillations, QPOs, see Sotani et al. (2007), is
reduced to a 1+1-dimensional equation, where the perturbations propagate only
along the Y-axis. We solve the 1+1-dimensional equation for different boundary
conditions and open magnetic field lines, i.e., magnetic field lines that reach
the surface and there match up with the exterior dipole magnetic field, as well
as closed magnetic lines, i.e., magnetic lines that never reach the stellar
surface. For the open field lines, we find two families of QPOs frequencies; a
family of "lower" QPOs frequencies which is located near the X-axis and a
family of "upper" frequencies located near the Y-axis. According to Levin
(2007), the fundamental frequencies of these two families can be interpreted as
the turning points of a continuous spectrum. We find that the upper frequencies
are constant multiples of the lower frequencies with a constant equaling 2n+1.
For the closed lines, the corresponding factor is n+1 . By these relations, we
can explain both the lower and the higher observed frequencies in SGR 1806-20

Effect of interactions on vortices in a nonequilibrium polariton condensate
We demonstrate the creation of vortices in a macroscopically occupied polariton state formed in a semiconductor microcavity. A weak external laser beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is used to imprint a vortex on the condensate arising from the polariton optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The vortex core radius is found to decrease with increasing pump power, and is determined by polariton-polariton interactions. As a result of OAM conservation in the parametric scattering process, the excitation consists of a vortex in the signal and a corresponding antivortex in the idler of the OPO. The experimental results are in good agreement with a theoretical model of a vortex in the polariton OPO
Histological evidence for a supraspinous ligament in sauropod dinosaurs
Supraspinous ossified rods have been reported in the sacra of some derived sauropod dinosaurs. Although different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin ofthis structure, histological evidence has never been provided to support or reject any of them. In order to establish its origin, we analyse and characterize the microstructure of thesupraspinous rod of two sauropod dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina. The supraspinous ossified rod is almost entirely formed by dense Haversian bone. Remains ofprimary bone consist entirely of an avascular tissue composed of two types of fibre-like structures, which are coarse and longitudinally (parallel to the main axis of the element) oriented. These structures are differentiated on the basis of their optical properties under polarized light. Very thin fibrous strands are also observed in some regions. These small fibres are all oriented parallel to one another but perpendicular to the element main axis. Histological features of the primary bone tissue indicate that the sacral supraspinous rod corresponds to an ossified supraspinous ligament. The formation of this structure appears to have been a non-pathological metaplastic ossification, possibly induced by the continuous tensile forces applied to the element.Fil: Cerda, Ignacio Alejandro.
