    Discrete Point Flow Networks for Efficient Point Cloud Generation

    Generative models have proven effective at modeling 3D shapes and their statistical variations. In this paper we investigate their application to point clouds, a 3D shape representation widely used in computer vision for which, however, only few generative models have yet been proposed. We introduce a latent variable model that builds on normalizing flows with affine coupling layers to generate 3D point clouds of an arbitrary size given a latent shape representation. To evaluate its benefits for shape modeling we apply this model for generation, autoencoding, and single-view shape reconstruction tasks. We improve over recent GAN-based models in terms of most metrics that assess generation and autoencoding. Compared to recent work based on continuous flows, our model offers a significant speedup in both training and inference times for similar or better performance. For single-view shape reconstruction we also obtain results on par with state-of-the-art voxel, point cloud, and mesh-based methods.Comment: In ECCV'2

    Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production Based on a Serial Metal-Salen Complexes and the Reaction Mechanism

    KGaA, Weinheim Three metal-salen (Ni, Cu, Zn) complexes were firstly introduced into homogeneous photocatalytic hydrogen-evolution systems. Based on these complexes, we developed noble-metal-free hydrogen production systems using disodium salts of Eosin Y (EY2−) as photosensitizers and trimethylamine (TEA) as sacrificial donors. In a Ni(II)-salen/EY2−/TEA system, a TON of 362 based on Ni(II)-salen was achieved in 5.5 h with one time complement for EY2−. The stability study revealed the quick photodecomposition of EY2− in the presence of ether Ni(II)-salen, TEA or both chemicals, and quick dehalogenation of EY2− was observed in the presence of TEA under irradiation. Besides, relatively slower photodecomposition of Ni(II)-salen was also found. These factors should be responsible for the deactivation of the photolysis system. Investigation of electrocatalytic proton reduction by Ni(II)-salen showed a CECE mechanism. An overall catalytic rate constant of 7.62×106 M−2 s−1 was achieved. Combined with the stability analysis, photo-induced electron transfer and electrochemistry investigation, for the first time, the photocatalytic hydrogen production mechanism for metal-salen complexes (e. g. Ni(II)-salen) was proposed

    Practices in primary health care oriented toward the harmful consumption of drugs

    Objective To analyze the practices of primary care focused on the harmful consumption of drugs. Method This is a qualitative study, developed with a dialectical-critical approach. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 10 employees of a basic health unit (UBS). Results The demands are not accepted, and if they go beyond the barriers shaped by the historical absence of health care practices for drug users and moralistic and preconceived ideologies, they are not reinterpreted as health needs; practices that meet these demands and go beyond the barriers are poor; the functionalist approach, which explains drug use as a disease and considers drug users as deviants, supports the few existing practices. Conclusion primary health care is mistakenly focused on addiction; it lacks structural elements of the production process in health and internal dynamics of the working processes that would foster the development of collective practices

    Constraining General Two Higgs Doublet Models by the Evolution of Yukawa Couplings

    We study how general two Higgs doublet models can be constrained by considering their properties under renormalization group evolution of the Yukawa couplings. We take into account both the appearance of a Landau pole as well as off-diagonal Yukawa couplings leading to flavour changing neutral currents in violation with experimental constraints at the electroweak scale. We find that the latter condition can be used to limit the amount of Z2 symmetry breaking allowed in a given model.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, added discussion of evolution from high to low scales, to be published in JHE

    A metabarcoding comparison of taxonomic richness and composition between the water column and the benthic boundary layer

    Zooplankton monitoring in shelf seas predominantly uses nets that miss the benthic boundary layer (BBL) just above the seabed. However, this boundary between pelagic and benthic assemblages can be faunistically rich, having its own distinct hyperbenthic fauna and acting as a low-light refuge for overwintering or dielly migrating zooplankton. To compare species richness and composition between pelagic and BBL habitats, we sampled a long-term monitoring site in the Western English Channel seasonally. Metabarcoding methods applied to vertical net samples (top 50 m in a �54-m water column) and those from a hyperbenthic sledge generated >100 000 sequences clustered into 294 opera�tional taxonomic units. Of these, 215 were found in the BBL and 170 in the water column. Some key taxa (e.g. mysids) were native to the BBL; by contrast, other delicate taxa (e.g. ctenophores) seemed to avoid the BBL. The major contrasts in plankton composition related to the seasonal cycle rather than to pelagic-BBL differences, suggesting that the basic dynamics of the site are captured by our ongoing long-term weekly resolution monitoring. Overall, metabarcoding approaches, applied to both water column and BBL, provide an independent view of plankton dynamics, and augment existing traditional methods

    Interference coloration as an anti-predator defence

    Interference coloration, in which the perceived colour varies predictably with the angle of illumination or observation, is extremely widespread across animal groups. However, despite considerable advances in our understanding of the mechanistic basis of interference coloration in animals, we still have a poor understanding of its function. Here, I show, using avian predators hunting dynamic virtual prey, that the presence of interference coloration can significantly reduce a predator's attack success. Predators required more pecks to successfully catch interference-coloured prey compared with otherwise identical prey items that lacked interference coloration, and attacks against prey with interference colours were less accurate, suggesting that changes in colour or brightness caused by prey movement hindered a predator's ability to pinpoint their exact location. The pronounced antipredator benefits of interference coloration may explain why it has evolved independently so many times. © 2015 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. All rights reserved

    Genetic variation in the Solanaceae fruit bearing species lulo and tree tomato revealed by Conserved Ortholog (COSII) markers

    The Lulo or naranjilla (Solanum quitoense Lam.) and the tree tomato or tamarillo (Solanum betaceum Cav. Sendt.) are both Andean tropical fruit species with high nutritional value and the potential for becoming premium products in local and export markets. Herein, we present a report on the genetic characterization of 62 accessions of lulos (n = 32) and tree tomatoes (n = 30) through the use of PCR-based markers developed from single-copy conserved orthologous genes (COSII) in other Solanaceae (Asterid) species. We successfully PCR amplified a set of these markers for lulos (34 out of 46 initially tested) and tree tomatoes (26 out of 41) for molecular studies. Six polymorphic COSII markers were found in lulo with a total of 47 alleles and five polymorphic markers in tree tomato with a total of 39 alleles in the two populations. Further genetic analyses indicated a high population structure (with FST > 0.90), which may be a result of low migration between populations, adaptation to various niches and the number of markers evaluated. We propose COSII markers as sound tools for molecular studies, conservation and the breeding of these two fruit species
