Can optical spectroscopy directly elucidate the ground state of C20?

    Get PDF
The optical response of the lowest energy members of the C20 family is calculated using time-dependent density functional theory within a real-space, real-time scheme. Significant differences are found among the spectra of the different isomers, and thus we propose optical spectroscopy as a tool for experimental investigation of the structure of these important clusters.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. octopus: a first-principles tool for excited electron–ion dynamics

We present a computer package aimed at the simulation of the electron–ion dynamics of finite systems, both in one and three dimensions, under the influence of time-dependent electromagnetic fields. The electronic degrees of freedom are treated quantum mechanically within the time-dependent Kohn–Sham formalism, while the ions are handled classically. All quantities are expanded in a regular mesh in real space, and the simulations are performed in real time. Although not optimized for that purpose, the program is also able to obtain static properties like ground-state geometries, or static polarizabilities. The method employed proved quite reliable and general, and has been successfully used to calculate linear and non-linear absorption spectra, harmonic spectra, laser induced fragmentation, etc. of a variety of systems, from small clusters to medium sized quantum dots. This work was partially supported by the RTN program of the European Union NANOPHASE (contract HPRN-CT-2000-00167), DGESIC (PB98-0345) and JCyL (VA28/99). Ceramics based on lead zirconium titanate Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) are well known for their excellent piezoelectric properties. These materials are generally produced by solid reaction technique, which is relatively simple and economical; however their production needs high lead oxide content (approx. 70%). Lead and its compounds are considered toxic and dangerous, due to direct pollution generated by the manufacturing process and machining of the compounds, and the inability to recycle products containing PZT. Therefore, other piezoelectric compositions based on lead free materials have begun investigated. In this paper, some developments in the field of lead-free piezoelectric materials, correlating the structure and microstructure with the properties materials properties are analyzed.Fil: Castro, Miriam Susana. Neutron-Capture elements in planetary nebulae: first detections of near-Infrared [Te III] and [Br V] emission lines

We have identified two new near-infrared emission lines in the spectra of planetary nebulae (PNe) arising from heavy elements produced by neutron capture reactions: [Te III] 2.1019 μ\mum and [Br V] 1.6429 μ\mum. [Te III] was detected in both NGC 7027 and IC 418, while [Br V] was seen in NGC 7027. The observations were obtained with the medium-resolution spectrograph EMIR on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias at La Palma, and with the high-resolution spectrograph IGRINS on the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at McDonald Observatory. New calculations of atomic data for these ions, specifically A-values and collision strengths, are presented and used to derive ionic abundances of Te2+^{2+} and Br4+^{4+}. We also derive ionic abundances of other neutron-capture elements detected in the near-infrared spectra, and estimate total elemental abundances of Se, Br, Kr, Rb, and Te after correcting for unobserved ions. Comparison of our derived enrichments to theoretical predictions from AGB evolutionary models shows reasonable agreement for solar metallicity progenitor stars of \sim2 - 4 M_{\odot}. The spectrally-isolated [Br V] 1.6429 μ\mum line has advantages for determining nebular Br abundances over optical [Br III] emission lines that can be blended with other features. Finally, measurements of Te are of special interest because this element lies beyond the first peak of the s-process, and thus provides new leverage on the abundance pattern of trans-iron species produced by AGB stars.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, 4 tables. Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics on the Electronic Boltzmann Equilibrium Distribution

    Get PDF
We prove that for a combined system of classical and quantum particles, it is possible to write a dynamics for the classical particles that incorporates in a natural way the Boltzmann equilibrium population for the quantum subsystem. In addition, these molecular dynamics do not need to assume that the electrons immediately follow the nuclear motion (in contrast to any adiabatic approach), and do not present problems in the presence of crossing points between different potential energy surfaces (conical intersections or spin-crossings). A practical application of this molecular dynamics to study the effect of temperature in molecular systems presenting (nearly) degenerate states - such as the avoided crossing in the ring-closure process of ozone - is presented.Comment: published in New J. Role of the metal supply pathway on silicon patterning by oblique ion beam sputtering

The dynamics of the pattern induced on a silicon surface by oblique incidence of a 40 keV Fe ion beam is studied. The results are compared with those obtained for two reference systems, namely a noble gas ion beam either without or with Fe co-deposition. The techniques employed include Atomic Force Microscopy, Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry, Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, as well as Superconducting Quantum Interference Device measurements. The Fe-induced pattern differs from those of both reference systems since a pattern displaying short hexagonal ordering develops, although it shares some features with them. In both Fe systems a chemical pattern, with iron silicide-rich and -poor regions, is formed upon prolonged irradiation. The metal pathway has a marked influence on the patterns’ morphological properties and on the spatial correlation between the chemical and morphological patterns. It also determines the iron silicide stoichiometry and the surface pattern magnetic properties that are better for the Fe-implanted system. These results show that in ion-beam-induced silicon surface patterning with reactive metals, the metal supply pathway is critical to determine not only the morphological pattern properties, but also the chemical and magnetic one

Composição isotópica de Nd na componente terrígena de sedimentos como marcador de eventos de Heinrich:estudo de um caso na margem continental NW Ibérica

The OMEX core KC 024-19 was studied aiming at to assess the influence of climate changes on the origin and transport of the sediments of the Galician continental slope, in the last 40 ka. The results show that sea level variation played a major role in the supply of the terrigenous sediments coming from the nearby continental areas, whose basement has a Variscan age. Additionally, coarse-grained clastic materials, corresponding to ice-rafted debris (IRD), were deposited through melting of icebergs during the Heinrich events (HE), in the last glaciation. The last four HE were identified in the core. The measured Nd isotope ratios reveal that there was a strong contribution of continental crustal sources significantly older than the Variscan basement for HE 1, 2 and 4. The most likely provenance of the coarse clasts deposited during these three events lie in NE America or Greenland, and the carrier icebergs should be fragments of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. In contrast, the HE 3 layer displays εNd values in the range of the compositions of the most common sediments in the core and, therefore, its IRD should have European source(s), which supports previous results obtained in other places of the European Atlantic margin.O core OMEX KC 024-19 foi estudado tendo em vista avaliar o papel das mudanças climáticas nos processos de transporte e nas fontes de sedimentos depositados no talude continental da Galiza, durante os últimos 40 ka.

The effect of sintering condition on structure, microstructure, and ferroelectric properties of (K0.44Na0.52Li0.04) (Nb0.86Ta0.10Sb0.04)- O3 (KNL-NTS) has been investigated. Ceramic powders have been synthesized by the solid-state reaction method and sintered at different temperatures (1115°C, 1125°C, and 1140°C). Then, samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and impedance spectroscopy. Through XRD results, the perovskite structure and small peaks corresponding to a secondary phase were detected. Ceramics processed at the highest temperatures showed higher densities and good piezoelectric properties (d33, Kp, and Kt), particularly specimens sintered at 1125°C presented the highest piezoelectric performance.Fil: Cortés, J.
