Approximated Symbolic Computations over Hybrid Automata

Hybrid automata are a natural framework for modeling and analyzing systems which exhibit a mixed discrete continuous behaviour. However, the standard operational semantics defined over such models implicitly assume perfect knowledge of the real systems and infinite precision measurements. Such assumptions are not only unrealistic, but often lead to the construction of misleading models. For these reasons we believe that it is necessary to introduce more flexible semantics able to manage with noise, partial information, and finite precision instruments. In particular, in this paper we integrate in a single framework based on approximated semantics different over and under-approximation techniques for hybrid automata. I sette vizi capitali: introspezione psicologica e analisi sociale

During the medieval age the scheme of the seven vices constitutes, as John Bossy underlines, a sort of great speculum societatis in which all the vices which ingenerate social disorder, conflict and violence can be recognised. The English historian believes that, on the contrary, this system proves itself weak with reference to the psychological introspection. Various elements, however, convey the impression that the social use of the seven vices' structure never obscured the interior life of the individual. On the contrary, in a first moment the capital vices (as delineated by Giovanni Cassiano) are actually expression and vehicle of a solitary morality: the one of the monk, who sees in the genealogy of the seven vices a series of psychological conditions progressively turned towards evil and who aims to self-knowledge and self-dominion within a search of purification and of approach to God. Even when, from Gregory the Great's age onwards, the interlocutor of the moral message is all mankind and the "mundane" use of the seven vices is favoured by the elimination of sloth and by the introduction of envy, the system's strong social character does not lessen its individual and psychological dimension. When the individual confession of the vices becomes obligatory for everyone, the seven vices' structure proves to be a perfect system of individuation and classification of the various vices, capable of guiding the whole social body through the administration of the souls, by tracing from the external actions the interior movements which have caused them. And even if the genealogical order of the vices tends to turn into a taxonomic, the system does not lose its guiding function of penetrating the human soul's recesses: on the contrary, the powerful psychological analysis of the capital vices, previously guaranteed by the monastic knowledge, finds new strength in the suggestions that, with special reference to human passions, derive from the discovery of Greek psychology

Dalla aedificatio all’affabilitas. Le virtù della conversazione nella cultura medievale

Nella cultura medievale la conversazione trova la sua legittimità all’interno dell’ampio spazio dell’edificazione accanto ad altri atti di locuzione come l’insegnamento, la predicazione, il consiglio, l’esortazione, l’ammonizione, la preghiera. Come quegli atti anche la conversazione deve essere una parola costruttiva volta alla realizzazione di quel progetto di salvezza in cui l’intera umanità è impegnata dopo la caduta; ma a differenza di quegli atti, la conversazione non è una parola riservata a specifiche figure che agiscono in tempi, luoghi e modi istituzionalmente definiti; conversare è di tutti, uomini e donne, laici e religiosi, giovani e vecchi che si incontrano, e parlano, in luoghi e in occasioni diverse, a casa davanti al camino, in ospedale in occasione di una malattia, in viaggio, a tavola. Anche i contenuti della conversazione non sono definiti come quelli delle altre parole, sospesi come sono tra istruzione e ricreazione e dunque pericolosamente inclini a superare i confini della parola utile per varcare quelli della parola vana. Tuttavia, all’interno dello spazio dell’edificazione la conversazione trova le sue regole, organizzate all’interno dello vecchio schema delle circostanze retoriche (chi, cosa, quando, dove, a chi) e, soprattutto, la sua virtù: l’affabilità, una ‘piccola’ ma preziosa virtù, che percorre la tradizione prima patristica e poi monastica per occupare un posto importante nel sistema delle virtù di Tommaso d’Aquino

Unwinding biological systems

Unwinding conditions have been fruitfully exploited in Information Flow Security to define persistent security properties. In this paper we investigate their meaning and possible uses in the analysis of biological systems. In particular, we elaborate on the notion of robustness and propose some instances of unwinding over the process algebra Bio-PEPA and over hybrid automata. We exploit such instances to analyse two case-studies: Neurospora crassa circadian system and Influenza kinetics models

Discrete Semantics for Hybrid Automata

Many natural systems exhibit a hybrid behavior characterized by a set of continuous laws which are switched by discrete events. Such behaviors can be described in a very natural way by a class of automata called hybrid automata. Their evolution are represented by both dynamical systems on dense domains and discrete transitions. Once a real system is modeled in a such framework, one may want to analyze it by applying automatic techniques, such as Model Checking or Abstract Interpretation. Unfortunately, the discrete/continuous evolutions not only provide hybrid automata of great flexibility, but they are also at the root of many undecidability phenomena. This paper addresses issues regarding the decidability of the reachability problem for hybrid automata (i.e., "can the system reach a state a from a state b?") by proposing an "inaccurate" semantics. In particular, after observing that dense sets are often abstractions of real world domains, we suggest, especially in the context of biological simulation, to avoid the ability of distinguishing between values whose distance is less than a fixed \u3b5. On the ground of the above considerations, we propose a new semantics for first-order formul\ue6 which guarantees the decidability of reachability. We conclude providing a paradigmatic biological example showing that the new semantics mimics the real world behavior better than the precise one

Is Hyper-extensionality Preservable Under Deletions of Graph Elements?

Any hereditarily finite set S can be represented as a finite pointed graph \u2013dubbed membership graph\u2013 whose nodes denote elements of the transitive closure of {S} and whose edges model the membership relation. Membership graphs must be hyper-extensional, that is pairwise distinct nodes are not bisimilar and (uniquely) represent hereditarily finite sets. We will see that the removal of even a single node or edge from a membership graph can cause \u201ccollapses\u201d of different nodes and, therefore, the loss of hyper-extensionality of the graph itself. With the intent of gaining a deeper understanding on the class of hyper-extensional hereditarily finite sets, this paper investigates whether pointed hyper-extensional graphs always contain either a node or an edge whose removal does not disrupt the hyper-extensionality property

A POLÍTICA DE ASSISTÊNCIA ESTUDANTIL NO BRASIL: O CASO DA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE JUIZ DE FORA

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar a trajetória das políticas de Assistência ao Estudante no Brasil, bem como analisar a Política de Assistência Estudantil de uma Universidade Federal, a fim de observar as ações de assistência desenvolvidas nas universidades, identificando os seus instrumentos de monitoramento e de avaliação. Para tanto, este trabalho baseia-se em um estudo de caso, que procura abordar a Política de Apoio Estudantil da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. O Decreto nº 7.234/10, que dispõe sobre o Programa Nacional de Assistência Estudantil, estabelece que as instituições federais de ensino superior devem fixar mecanismos de acompanhamento e avaliação e, neste sentido, em análise ao normativo interno da UFJF, que dispõe sobre o Apoio Estudantil, não foram identificados dispositivos que estabeleçam tais mecanismos. Portanto, com o intuito de melhorar a gestão do Programa de Apoio Estudantil e de cumprir o Decreto nº 7.234/10, torna-se necessário que a UFJF estabeleça e formalize os mecanismos de acompanhamento e avaliação de sua Política de Apoio Estudantil

Qualidade da água a partir de análises físicas e químicas e aplicação de SIG em afluentes da bacia do baixo rio Iguaçu.

A forma de uso e ocupacao do solo tem importancia fundamental no ciclo hidrologico e na ocorrencia natural da agua, sendo um forte modificador ambiental. Nosso objetivo foi realizar um levantamento de dados fisicos, quimicos e espaciais, utilizando mapas de uso e ocupacao do solo, buscando avaliar a agua em oito ambientes loticos, presentes na bacia do Baixo Iguacu com diferentes condicoes de vegetacao e acao antropica. Foram usadas como metricas os parametros: temperatura, turbidez, condutividade eletrica, solidos totais, pH, oxigenio dissolvido (OD), amonia, nitrito e ortofosfato. Nas primeiras quatro coletas (1 . outono, 2 . inverno, 3 . verao, 4 . verao), dos doze parametros analisados, pH, condutividade eletrica, temperatura, turbidez, oxigenio dissolvido e solidos totais foram estimados in loco com o suporte dos equipamentos Horiba. Na quinta coleta (5 - outono) o pH e a temperatura foram estimados in loco e o oxigenio dissolvido fixado em campo. Aplicamos tecnicas de sensoriamento remoto utilizando o programa QGIS e o plugin SCP para determinar o uso e ocupacao do solo e facilitar o processo de classificacao das imagens. As coletas foram realizadas nos municipios de Cascavel, Ceu Azul e Santa Tereza do Oeste nos meses de maio, agosto e dezembro de 2016, marco de 2017 e abril de 2018. Para correlacionar os dados obtidos nas analises de agua e na classificacao das imagens foram utilizadas as analises de Redundancia (RDA) e a Correlacao de Pearson, realizadas no software R-3.5.0 for Windows. Em ordem de coleta os valores de explicacao da matriz de dados dependentes foram de 61%, 51%, 49%, 43% e 46%. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que os riachos mais afetados pela agricultura foram: Nene, Paz e Bom Retiro. Tormenta, Pedregulho, Jumelo e Arquimedes foram afetados de forma negativa pelo solo exposto (nu). Dentre as principais metricas afetadas pelo fator solo exposto estao a turbidez, a temperatura, o ortofosfato e a amonia. Da mesma forma, os parametros afetados pela agricultura foram a condutividade, o nitrito, a tubidez, a temperatura e a amonia. O riacho Manoel Gomes sofreu influencia direta das areas florestadas que o cercam, demonstrando otimas concentracoes de oxigenio dissolvido (ƒÊ=9,74) e as menores temperaturas dentre todos os riachos (ƒÊ=16,68), alem de nao sofrerem impactos negativos. Modelos mistos como os do presente estudo mostram que diferentes parametros de qualidade da agua variam em sua capacidade de resposta a diferentes regioes e fatores quando analisados separadamente. E possivel observar a dinamica e a constante modificacao de paisagens, que alteram de diferentes formas a qualidade da agua. As variacoes recorrentes a uma matriz agricola dependem totalmente do periodo de safra e solo em pousio, onde consequentemente, afetam todo o ecossistema e as comunidades presentes no entorno. As multiplas formas de uso e ocupacao sugerem a busca por trabalhos com as formas de manejo mais adequadas para que as acoes sejam direcionadas para toda a bacia hidrografica
