Logarithmic-function generator
Solid-state logarithmic-function generator is compact and provides improved accuracy. Generator includes a stable multivibrator feeding into RC circuit. Resulting exponentially decaying voltage is compared with input signal. Generator output is proportional to time required for exponential voltage to decay from preset reference level to level of input signal
Hard thermal loops in the real-time formalism
We present a systematic discussion of Braaten and Pisarski's hard thermal
loop (HTL) effective theory within the framework of the real-time
(Schwinger-Keldysh) formalism. As is well known, the standard imaginary-time
HTL amplitudes for hot gauge theory express the polarization of a medium made
out of nonabelian charged point-particles; we show that the complete real-time
HTL theory includes, in addition, a second set of amplitudes which account for
Gaussian fluctuations in the charge distributions, but nothing else. We give a
concise set of graphical rules which generate both set of functions, and
discuss its relation to classical plasma physics.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Phase control circuits using frequency multiplications for phased array antennas
A phase control coupling circuit for use with a phased array antenna is described. The coupling circuit includes a combining circuit which is coupled to a transmission line, a frequency multiplier circuit which is coupled to the combining circuit, and a recombining circuit which is coupled between the frequency multiplier circuit and phased array antenna elements. In a doubler embodiment, the frequency multiplier circuit comprises frequency doublers and the combining and recombining circuits comprise four-port hybrid power dividers. In a generalized embodiment, the multiplier circuit comprises frequency multiplier elements which multiply to the Nth power, the combining circuit comprises four-part hybrid power dividers, and the recombinding circuit comprises summing circuits

On the Hierarchy of Block Deterministic Languages
A regular language is -lookahead deterministic (resp. -block
deterministic) if it is specified by a -lookahead deterministic (resp.
-block deterministic) regular expression. These two subclasses of regular
languages have been respectively introduced by Han and Wood (-lookahead
determinism) and by Giammarresi et al. (-block determinism) as a possible
extension of one-unambiguous languages defined and characterized by
Br\"uggemann-Klein and Wood. In this paper, we study the hierarchy and the
inclusion links of these families. We first show that each -block
deterministic language is the alphabetic image of some one-unambiguous
language. Moreover, we show that the conversion from a minimal DFA of a
-block deterministic regular language to a -block deterministic automaton
not only requires state elimination, and that the proof given by Han and Wood
of a proper hierarchy in -block deterministic languages based on this result
is erroneous. Despite these results, we show by giving a parameterized family
that there is a proper hierarchy in -block deterministic regular languages.
We also prove that there is a proper hierarchy in -lookahead deterministic
regular languages by studying particular properties of unary regular
expressions. Finally, using our valid results, we confirm that the family of
-block deterministic regular languages is strictly included into the one of
-lookahead deterministic regular languages by showing that any -block
deterministic unary language is one-unambiguous
Two-Sided Derivatives for Regular Expressions and for Hairpin Expressions
The aim of this paper is to design the polynomial construction of a finite
recognizer for hairpin completions of regular languages. This is achieved by
considering completions as new expression operators and by applying derivation
techniques to the associated extended expressions called hairpin expressions.
More precisely, we extend partial derivation of regular expressions to
two-sided partial derivation of hairpin expressions and we show how to deduce a
recognizer for a hairpin expression from its two-sided derived term automaton,
providing an alternative proof of the fact that hairpin completions of regular
languages are linear context-free.Comment: 28 page
A Study of Non-Neutral Networks with Usage-based Prices
Hahn and Wallsten wrote that network neutrality "usually means that broadband
service providers charge consumers only once for Internet access, do not favor
one content provider over another, and do not charge content providers for
sending information over broadband lines to end users." In this paper we study
the implications of non-neutral behaviors under a simple model of linear
demand-response to usage-based prices. We take into account advertising
revenues and consider both cooperative and non-cooperative scenarios. In
particular, we model the impact of side-payments between service and content
providers. We also consider the effect of service discrimination by access
providers, as well as an extension of our model to non-monopolistic content
providers

Periodization, Translation, Prescription and the Emergence of Classical French
In this article we demonstrate how fine-grained analysis of salient features of linguistic change over a relatively short, but significant period can help refine our notions of periodization. As our case study, we consider whether it is appropriate to distinguish a period called français préclassique (‘Pre-Classical French’), and if so, what its temporal limits are. As our contemporary informants we take, on the one hand, the comments of writers of remarks on the French language, who were highly conscious of language change, and on the other, usage in successive French translations of the same Latin source text which can be exploited to track and date the adoption of ‘modern’ linguistic variants. We find atypical patterns of change – and notably changes which move rapidly through Labov’s different stages – that contribute to the sense of discontinuity or periodization. However, this sense of ‘rupture’ does not coincide with the chronological boundaries hitherto suggested for français préclassique, thus throwing the validity of this period into question.This is the author accepted manuscript.
